Rising from the pastoral landscape of central California, the HS residence echoes of a time when the majority of humankind lived with and not simply on the land. To accomplish this, the architectural team sought to negotiate the boundary between contemporary and agrarian design. Inspired in large part by the surrounding hills, the home is organized around three scattered courtyards, which anchor both the architectural form and floor plan. Rather than their customary use as the antidote for urbanization, these courtyards have been designed instead to elevate what is sacred in the simple rituals of daily living. Two courtyards form the primary and most distant wings of the home. One is designed solely for living, and the other is devoted exclusively to resting. Through this organization, the architects sought to prioritize simplicity of function as well as form. A narrow corridor connects these two wings and also doubles as the fourth wall to the third and largest courtyard in the heart of the home. Fully exposed to the sun and stars above, this central courtyard is home to one of the site’s most treasured features: an ancient oak tree. The circulation between these three sanctuaries mirrors nature’s foundational rhythm - the movement from day to night and back to day again. A place of retreat and rest, this residence ultimately taps into the timeless heritage of symbiotic and simple living with the land.

This enviable property sits perched on the bluff directly across from the ocean in the La Selva Beach neighborhood of Aptos. Project goals included overall beautification via plants with year-round color and showy blooms, more privacy on the patio and deck, and a way to deter frequent dog-walkers from cutting through the garden. We accomplished this last goal by building up soil mounds behind retaining walls and using taller plants at the apex. Privacy for the deck was achieved by the addition of sleek stucco walls. Project features a large swath of a walkable, drought-tolerant grass alternative. Special care was devoted to selecting plants that can withstand the wind, fog and salt-spray that occur near the ocean. South African and Australian plants figure prominently into the plant palette and create a vibrant complimentary color scheme against the ocean backdrop. Who wouldn't want to spend time in this ocean-view garden?

It wasn’t necessary to overthink things when Axis Mundi designed interiors for an apartment at Brooklyn’s glass-sheathed 1 Grand Army Plaza, the luxury building by Richard Meier already endowed with all the “starchitect” bells and whistles, as well as drop-dead stunning views of Brooklyn, the harbor and Prospect Park. What did require considerable aptitude was to strike the right balance between respect for these assets, particularly the panoramas, and livability. The all-white scheme doesn’t just complement Meier’s own aesthetic devotion to this purest of pure hues; it serves as a cool backdrop for the views, affording comfortable vantage points from which to enjoy them, yet not drawing attention away from the splendors of one of the world’s most distinctive boroughs. Sleek, low-lying Italian seating avoids distracting interruptions on the horizon line. The lake views from this townhome’s master bathroom are panoramic and breathtaking. Unfortunately, the original layout of the bathroom itself left much to be desired. An old whirlpool tub took up too much floor space, the shower stall was too small and the room itself was cramped and dysfunctional. The homeowners’ goals called for improving the room’s traffic flow, creating a larger and more functional shower stall with dual use, taking full advantage of the lake view and bringing a Romanesque theme to the space. The first step in the renovation was to replace the old whirlpool with a small corner tub that took up half the space. The rest of that side of the room is devoted to the beautiful Roman-style shower stall with double rain shower, double body sprays and built in niches, arch headers and a heavy glass enclosure. The stalls creative use of mosaic tiles and medallion has made this shower stall the jewel of this project. The vanity uses dark cherry cabinetry which complements the cream rustic tumbled marble and oil rubbed bronze fixtures. A beautiful, curved slab of exotic marble was cut for the countertop and two hand-crafted vessel sinks made from tumbled stone are on top of it. The homeowners have never been happier to use their master bathroom .They get to have their own Roman-style bath experience by taking a few steps from their bedroom. Looking out of this gorgeous bathroom overlooking the lake just cannot be expressed with words.

Camp Wobegon is a nostalgic waterfront retreat for a multi-generational family. The home's name pays homage to a radio show the homeowner listened to when he was a child in Minnesota. Throughout the home, there are nods to the sentimental past paired with modern features of today. The five-story home sits on Round Lake in Charlevoix with a beautiful view of the yacht basin and historic downtown area. Each story of the home is devoted to a theme, such as family, grandkids, and wellness. The different stories boast standout features from an in-home fitness center complete with his and her locker rooms to a movie theater and a grandkids' getaway with murphy beds. The kids' library highlights an upper dome with a hand-painted welcome to the home's visitors. Throughout Camp Wobegon, the custom finishes are apparent. The entire home features radius drywall, eliminating any harsh corners. Masons carefully crafted two fireplaces for an authentic touch. In the great room, there are hand constructed dark walnut beams that intrigue and awe anyone who enters the space. Birchwood artisans and select Allenboss carpenters built and assembled the grand beams in the home. Perhaps the most unique room in the home is the exceptional dark walnut study. It exudes craftsmanship through the intricate woodwork. The floor, cabinetry, and ceiling were crafted with care by Birchwood carpenters. When you enter the study, you can smell the rich walnut. The room is a nod to the homeowner's father, who was a carpenter himself. The custom details don't stop on the interior. As you walk through 26-foot NanoLock doors, you're greeted by an endless pool and a showstopping view of Round Lake. Moving to the front of the home, it's easy to admire the two copper domes that sit atop the roof. Yellow cedar siding and painted cedar railing complement the eye-catching domes.

As more and more people begin working from home and many schools are shifting to a virtual learning environment, desk space is becoming a necessity but not every homeowner has an entire room to devote to a home office. Both designers and homeowners have started to rethink what an office could be. From redesigning an alcove of a living room or bedroom to repurposing a spare closet, the idea to create a workspace the entire family can use comes to life with Wellborn Cabinet. This multi-purpose design could function as a home office for those who telecommute, a virtual classroom or homework center for children, a crafting area, or a sewing space. Being merely five feet wide, this re-imagined area is intended to be both beautiful and packed with function. Our designer chose a Millbrook door style in Cherry finished in a Drift stain for the base cabinets as well as the middle wall cabinets complete with matching finished ends. For the upper tall cabinets, a complimentary Bedford Square door style in Maple shows our Divinity paint finish.
