This 1960s rambler in Normandy Park came with a distinctive mid-century modern charm, thanks to its exposed beams and tongue-and-groove wood ceilings. The homeowners wanted to preserve that character while introducing modern conveniences and updated finishes.
Custom wood cabinetry was chosen to harmonize with the natural wood elements, keeping the space warm and inviting. Clean, neutral countertops and ceramic tile flooring provide a fresh, durable foundation, while under-cabinet lighting brightens the workspace and highlights the details.
The kitchen also includes direct access from the garage for everyday convenience. A unique feature—the backside of the living room’s original wood-burning oven—was cleaned and reimagined as a display nook, honoring the home’s history while giving it a functional twist. The result is a kitchen that blends beautiful natural character with modern updates, perfectly balancing the old and new.

Perfectly situated to capture views of the Cocheco River, this classic 2-story shingle-style 5,370 SF residence was designed and built to exacting standards. Immerse yourself in elevated spaces that include a remarkable kitchen, dining, and great room, each with direct access to the 1,115 SF rear patio. The home’s garden room overlooks the east side of the property and doubles as a media room. His and Her executive offices provide separate, productive spaces for work or inspiration. The custom spiral staircase brings you to the home’s bedroom level, which provides four generous bedrooms, including the primary with its vaulted ceilings, substantial closet, and spa-like bath featuring a heated floor, stone soaking tub, and private balcony.

This Virginia couple recently moved into a five-acre lot in Haymarket, VA with the expectation of adding an in-law suite to the right side of their home.
The addition provides complete independence, with its own garage, secondary garage/storage space with built-in ramp, workshop, a master suite and closet, an aging-in-place bathroom, kitchen, and a main living area, along with a front porch overlooking the front of the home.
This couple wanted to maintain the exterior integrity with a seamless connection between the interior and exterior of the home. Matching the front gables, stone and siding fronts, replicating the fascia, windows and doors, garage doors and other details.
The front porch leads to the front door of the main living and kitchen area towards the rear portion. A side door leads into the mudroom and existing home.
The rear side includes a master bedroom suite which leads towards twelve feet of French doors on the back deck of the existing home, connecting the new deck to the existing porch. A large closet space with built-ins is placed just off the bedroom and connects to the master bathroom suite. This bathroom is equipped with large walk-in shower, frameless glass door, a soaking tub, beautiful tile setting, and double vanity space giving the luxury one needs.
The lead staircase connects the upstairs level to the basement level, which includes one multipurpose room, second garage, storage and a workshop. Lots of windows and doors allow plenty of daylight to enter this addition. Outside of the French doors, one can walk onto the basketball court and soccer.
Every element of the existing home was replicated for this addition such as, matching cabinetry, trim work, 10 foot ceiling, wide size wood plank, granite countertops and much more.
The front garage provides direct access from driveway and the interior ramp serves as a walkway.
This family is delighted to have their loved one living just few steps away from them.

The Whistle Hill Residence anchors a ten home modern development and introduces a refined contemporary language to the region. Clean lines, controlled massing, and expansive glazing allow the home to sit confidently within its wooded site while maintaining sensitivity to the natural landscape. Strategic elevation changes and selective steel framing create open spans and cantilevered forms without sacrificing envelope performance.
Below grade, the design integrates a full wellness program—including a massage room, sauna, and locker area—supported by multi-zone mechanical controls, advanced vapor management, and acoustically isolated assemblies. The level also features a recreation area with a mini bar, poker lounge, and substantial built-in storage, all finished to create a warm, spa-like environment.
On the main level, the open kitchen and living area transition seamlessly to a protected patio with retractable screens and high-performance sliders, enabling year-round indoor–outdoor living. A private master wing includes dual closets, an electric fireplace, an oversized walk-in shower, and a secluded patio. Supporting spaces such as the office with custom millwork, walk-in pantry, and mudroom with laundry are integrated along a clear circulation spine.
The upper floors continue the home’s emphasis on clarity and light. Two third-floor bedrooms with walk-in closets share a spacious bath, while the rooftop level offers more than 1,500 square feet of engineered outdoor living space with sweeping woodland views and direct access to a greenhouse.
With its performance-driven detailing, thoughtful spatial organization, and modern architectural expression, the Whistle Hill Residence establishes a new benchmark for contemporary residential design in the area.
The project is a partnership with DHB Homes.

This beautifully detailed Best Address DC apartment had existing service and redundant circulation spaces befitting its grandeur but which were no longer needed. The newly renovated kitchen was significantly enlarged beyond its original footprint by incorporating these underutilized spaces, providing direct access off of the formal dining room. A new bath was added off of the front hall, taking the place of an outdated butler’s pantry. The unit’s main bath was also updated to include a sunny walk-in shower, improved vanity, and additional storage space. In all aspects of the design, inspiration was taken both from the original 1901 detailing and finishes as well as the owners’ colorful folk art collection.

No strangers to remodeling, the new owners of this St. Paul tudor knew they could update this decrepit 1920 duplex into a single-family forever home.
A list of desired amenities was a catalyst for turning a bedroom into a large mudroom, an open kitchen space where their large family can gather, an additional exterior door for direct access to a patio, two home offices, an additional laundry room central to bedrooms, and a large master bathroom. To best understand the complexity of the floor plan changes, see the construction documents.
As for the aesthetic, this was inspired by a deep appreciation for the durability, colors, textures and simplicity of Norwegian design. The home’s light paint colors set a positive tone. An abundance of tile creates character. New lighting reflecting the home’s original design is mixed with simplistic modern lighting. To pay homage to the original character several light fixtures were reused, wallpaper was repurposed at a ceiling, the chimney was exposed, and a new coffered ceiling was created.
Overall, this eclectic design style was carefully thought out to create a cohesive design throughout the home.
Come see this project in person, September 29 – 30th on the 2018 Castle Home Tour.

The master bedroom has subtle neutral tones but still has natural light. A four-foot addition was added to this suite to achieve the plethora of natural light through the skylights and a sliding door that gives the homeowners direct access to the backyard.

Originally, this 3700 SF two level eclectic farmhouse from the mid 1980’s underwent design changes to reflect a more colonial style. Now, after being completely renovated with additional 2800 SF living space, it’s combined total of 6500 SF boasts an Energy Star certification of 5 stars.
Approaching this completed home, you will meander along a new driveway through the dense buffer of trees until you reach the clearing, and then circle a tiered fountain on axis with the front entry accentuating the symmetrical main structure. Many of the exterior changes included enclosing the front porch and rear screened porch, replacing windows, replacing all the vinyl siding with and fiber cement siding, creating a new front stoop with winding brick stairs and wrought iron railings as will as other additions to the left and rear of the home.
The existing interior was completely fro the studs and included modifying uses of many of the existing rooms such as converting the original dining room into an oval shaped theater with reclining theater seats, fiber-optic starlight ceiling and an 80” television with built-in surround sound. The laundry room increased in size by taking in the porch and received all new cabinets and finishes. The screened porch across the back of the house was enclosed to create a new dining room, enlarged the kitchen, all of which allows for a commanding view of the beautifully landscaped pool. The upper master suite begins by entering a private office then leads to a newly vaulted bedroom, a new master bathroom with natural light and an enlarged closet.
The major portion of the addition space was added to the left side as a part time home for the owner’s brother. This new addition boasts an open plan living, dining and kitchen, a master suite with a luxurious bathroom and walk–in closet, a guest suite, a garage and its own private gated brick courtyard entry and direct access to the well appointed pool patio.
And finally the last part of the project is the sunroom and new lagoon style pool. Tucked tightly against the rear of the home. This room was created to feel like a gazebo including a metal roof and stained wood ceiling, the foundation of this room was constructed with the pool to insure the look as if it is floating on the water. The pool’s negative edge opposite side allows open views of the trees beyond. There is a natural stone waterfall on one side of the pool and a shallow area on the opposite side for lounge chairs to be placed in it along with a hot tub that spills into the pool. The coping completes the pool’s natural shape and continues to the patio utilizing the same stone but separated by Zoysia grass keeping the natural theme. The finishing touches to this backyard oasis is completed utilizing large boulders, Tempest Torches, architectural lighting and abundant variety of landscaping complete the oasis for all to enjoy.
