As part of Valor Roofing’s Raise the Roof program, US Army Veteran, SPC Douglas Tibbs received a free roof for his home in Port Republic, MD. SPC Tibbs is a disabled veteran who served 2 tours in Vietnam from 1966 to 1967. He volunteered to join in RTR1965 and was discharged from active duty in 1968. SPC Tibbs has fought the continuing battle on the Homefront as well. Grappling with PTS (post traumatic stress) since his return stateside SPC Tibbs has demonstrated that there is life after wartime service.

Project by Studio H:T principal in charge Brad Tomecek (now with Tomecek Studio Architecture). This project tests the theory of bringing high quality design to a prefabricated factory setting. Enrolled in the LEED-Home Pilot, this residence completed certification. The modular home was conceived as two boxes that slide above one another to create outdoor living space and a lower covered rear entry. The passive solar design invites large amounts of light from the south while minimizing openings to the east and west. Factory construction saves both time and costs while reducing waste and using a controlled labor force. Built in a factory north of Denver, the home arrived by flatbed truck in two pieces and was craned into place in about 4 hours providing a fast, sustainable, cost effective alternative to traditional homebuilding techniques. Upgraded lighting fixtures, plumbing fixtures, doors, door hardware, windows, tile and bamboo flooring were incorporated into the design. 80% of the residence was completed in the factory in less than 3 weeks and other items were finished on site including the exterior stucco, garage, metal railing and stair. Stack-Slide-Stitch describes the conceptual process of how to tie together two distinct modular boxes. Stack refers to setting one modular directly on top of the other. Slide refers to the action that creates an upper southern deck area while simultaneously providing a covered rear entry area. The stitching or interlocking occurs with the upward extension of the lower volume with the front deck walls and with the rear two story vertical.

Sculptural agaves, succulents and California native plants punctuate the front landscape complementing the “arroyo seco” rain garden studded with boulders and branches. The rain garden catches 50% of the stormwater runoff from the roof and infiltrates it into the soil. The remaining 50% of the runoff goes to a second rain garden in the back yard.

Over-pool configuration in Columbus, Ohio: a clear-span Allscape Patio Signature Series motorized louvered pergola above the water, with integrated drop screens rated for open exposure, stone-clad columns and a sheer-descent water feature. Engineered footings land outside the pool shell zone and the long-span louvers are held to the deflection limits that keep them sealing. Louvers are pitched to integrated gutters that discharge away from the pool so roof runoff stays out of the water chemistry; rain sensors close the roof automatically. The metal structure within five feet of the pool's edge is bonded to the pool's equipotential grid under NEC Article 680, with GFCI-protected motor and lighting circuits. Kitchen sink garbage disposal inspection at a Tahoe City home. The unit installed under the sink is an InSinkErator Contractor 333 food waste disposer, three quarter horsepower, 120 volt single phase. Our technician checked the mounting assembly, went over the drain connections and the P trap, looked at how the discharge was routed, and confirmed the model and rating from the nameplate rather than working from a guess. Findings and replacement options were documented and presented to the owner. No replacement was performed on this visit, so these photos show the existing condition. If the unit is replaced, the finished install will be added to this project. Knowing exactly what is installed is what makes a replacement decision simple. Our client tasked us with creating a versatile workspace for their family, including a daughter in college. Space was at a premium in their downtown loft, so we needed to create an efficient space that could be changed in the future to fulfill other needs. Our solution was a custom metal desk on casters, topped with concrete quartz. The office has little natural light, so white lacquered cabinets and metallic wallpaper were used to add life to the space.
