2015 Garden Dialogues: Falls Village, CT, Pittman Residence, July 19

Sunday July 19, 3:00 to 4:30pm | Falls Village Pittman Residence by Designed by A.E. Bye, Dialogue led by Kimberly Mercurio of Kimberly Mercurio Landscape Architecture Designed by twentieth-century landscape architect A.E. Bye, the Pittman Residence in Falls Village, Connecticut features an artistic landscape design both inspired by and accentuating the area’s natural ecological character. Embodying the architect’s own creative aesthetic, the property incorporates various undulating landforms that draw on the presence of natural shadows to create a memorable landscape that lingers in the minds of visitors long after they bid the property ado. This season, join landscape architect and scholar Kimberly Mercurio as she leads an engaging dialogue on the design history of the Pittman Residence and the significance of Bye’s play on shadows in landscape architecture. With her immense knowledge of A.E. Bye’s work, having recently completed the A.E. Bye/Landscape Architecture Archives Research Fellowship at Penn State University and received a grant from Dumbarton Oaks to further study and document his achievements, Mercurio’s presentation promises to be both educational and inspiring. Hired by the owners to provide interior design services for a complete remodel of a mid-century home in Berkeley Hills, California this family of four’s wishes were to create a home that was inviting, playful, comfortable and modern. Slated with a quirky floor plan that needed a rational design solution we worked extensively with the homeowners to provide interior selections for all finishes, cabinet designs, redesign of the fireplace and custom media cabinet, headboard and platform bed. Hues of walnut, white, gray, blues and citrine yellow were selected to bring an overall inviting and playful modern palette. Regan Baker Design was responsible for construction documents and assited with construction administration to help ensure the designs were well executed. Styling and new furniture was paired to compliment a few existing key pieces, including a commissioned piece of art, side board, dining table, console desk, and of course the breathtaking view of San Francisco's Bay. Mountain Nursery

The Yellow Cape Cod

This nursery makeover was a surprise to the homeowners during a "big reveal". This project began as an online design plan by Sarah Macklem of http://www.theyellowcapecod.com. After an online consultation, Sarah got to work creating a nursery design for Brian and Heidi, inspired by their favorite place to visit…the mountains. The design plan included an inspiration board, true to scale floorplan illustration, product source list, custom paint color recommendations and step-by-step instructions on how to install the design. Instead of delivering the plan to Brian and Heidi to handle the installation, Sarah took this project a step further. To demonstrate how a design plan comes to life, she flew to Denver to install the room, by herself, in just two days. Since Sarah offered to install the new nursery, the clients requested to be completely surprised by the design. They had no idea what the room looked like until the reveal. Working closely with the home owners and the builder, Jess Alway, Inc., Patty Jones of Patty Jones Design, LLC selected and designed interior finishes for this custom home which features distressed oak wood cabinetry with custom stain to create an old world effect, reclaimed wide plank fir hardwood, hand made tile mural in range back splash, granite slab counter tops with thick chiseled edges, custom designed interior and exterior doors, stained glass windows provided by the home owners, antiqued travertine tile, and many other unique features. Patty also selected exterior finishes – stain and paint colors, stone, roof color, etc. and was involved early with the initial planning working with the home architectural designer including preparing the presentation board and documentation for the Architectural Review Committee.
