Originally, the front of the house was on the left (eave) side, facing the primary street. Since the Garage was on the narrower, quieter side street, we decided that when we would renovate, we would reorient the front to the quieter side street, and enter through the front Porch. So initially we built the fencing and Pergola entering from the side street into the existing Front Porch. Then in 2003, we pulled off the roof, which enclosed just one large room and a bathroom, and added a full second story. Then we added the gable overhangs to create the effect of a cottage with dormers, so as not to overwhelm the scale of the site. The shingles are stained Cabots Semi-Solid Deck and Siding Oil Stain, 7406, color: Burnt Hickory, and the trim is painted with Benjamin Moore Aura Exterior Low Luster Narraganset Green HC-157, (which is actually a dark blue). The owners of this Neo-Georgian home wanted to add a two-story screen porch from which to enjoy their beautiful gardens, designed by landscape architect Vince Zucchino. They also required renovations to the wife's bathroom and the transformation of their cavernous attic into finished usable space. The porch is sturdily built with excellent materials, including ipe flooring, African mahogany screen frames and doors, and bronze screens. The structure of the roof and second floor is exposed and well-crafted, evoking a sense of refined rustication that blends well with the Georgian detailing. The balcony and trellis are powder-coated steel. The columns are reinforced fiberglass over a balloon-framed superstructure. Copper gutters and flashings further ensure that this addition will be durable and easy to maintain. The LED lighting will keep the energy use to a minimum.

This is a Roberto Burle Marx- inspired design, a drought tolerant landscape that imitates the vibrant colors and patterns of the tropics. We kept the monstera and bird of paradise plants, and with the colorful trim on the house, it all works together in this eclectic mashup.
