Earlier this month I was in the town of Northampton, to see a client who had reported a problem with her Travertine kitchen tiles. Basically the grout between the tiles was badly stained, to the point of appearing almost black. The Travertine tiles were also in need of some maintenance, and so I was commissioned to provide a clean, polish and a fresh seal. Travertine is a popular choice for kitchen flooring due to its relatively high durability and distinct features. My task was to get this floor back to looking its best. My priority was to address the badly stained grout so I cleaned the grout lines by hand using a combination of hand brushes and Tile Doctor Grout Clean-Up. The surface was pre-wet with water, before a solution of Grout-Clean Up and clean water was applied to the surface. The brushes were then used to agitate the solution. Grout Clean-Up contains a mix of concentrated phosphoric acid and cleaner designed to penetrate below the surface of the grout to remove grout stains, smears and mineral deposits. As you can see from the photos, Grout Clean-Up made an immediate difference to the appearance of the tiles. This product is suitable for use on masonry and acid resistant surfaces. After completing the clean, I gave the floor a thorough rinse to neutralise the floor after cleaning and removed as much of the water as possible using a wet vacuum. Following this, I paid attention to the tiles themselves, cleaning them to achieve a polished effect by using a system of burnishing pads. Tile Doctor burnishing pads comprise a set of four pads varying in grit type, from Coarse and Medium to Fine and Very Fine. I applied all four pads in turn to the floor, stopping to rinse the floor in between each. The result was a high quality polished finish. I then left the floor to dry completely overnight, before commencing the seal the next day. My choice of sealing product was Tile Doctor Colour Grow which is a colour intensifying sealer that both enhances the natural appearance of the stone and provides a durable surface seal. My client was very pleased with the finished product, and left the following comment on the Tile Doctor feedback system: “efficiently done”, yielding “good results”. For this Brooklyn condo renovation, Gallery Kitchen and Bath updated the entire kitchen and both bathrooms, as well as painted and laid out new flooring throughout the entire apartment. The owners wanted to unite the seeming medley of the existing space into a cohesive design more representative of their own style. With its ultra-high ceilings and exposed joints and beams, the space already lent itself to the farmhouse look. The end result is a modernized, eclectic farmhouse style that we keenly carried throughout the home. MORE DETAILS Compelling textures and color combos reign supreme. The kitchen features semi-custom Shaker-style stone gray cabinets, a white subway tile backsplash running all the way up the wall, and white quartz countertops. We built the island in part to create a pleasing yet efficient flow from the kitchen into the living and dining areas as the space was opened up. We also painted the plumbing stack white to not make it stand out. We also redesigned the bathrooms, giving each a unique treatment. In the master bath, we took a Victorian-goes-modern approach with coral walls, champagne fixtures, and a clawfoot tub. In the guest bathroom, we stuck to a transitional style that approaches modern without becoming contemporary, pairing herringbone marble floor tiles with a mix of subway and penny tiles on the walls and in the shower. Both maintain elements, such as tiles, fixtures, and colors, that coordinate with the overall eclectic farmhouse look. HOW WE COLLABORATE Collaboration with our clients to their desired degree is one of our core pillars. In this condo renovation, the clients wanted central air and were initially considering a true central air system. We advised against it, as not only would it take away from the unique beauty of unusually tall ceilings by adding unsightly ductwork, but it would also significantly detract from the farmhouse look. Instead, we suggested a mini-split system. Our recommended units were both cost-effective and much more complementary to the comprehensive theme. Of course, we ultimately always honor the clients’ choices but it’s just as important to us that we make sure to provide all the necessary information so our clients can make educated decisions that are best for their needs. SPACE PLANNING Another key element of the renovation process is space planning. From this perspective, we consider the placement and positioning of objects with regard to the overall flow of space. The building where this renovation took place is U-shaped at one end, which happens to be where this particular apartment is located. Uniquely-shaped spaces naturally require more concentration than those built in the standard rectangular shape. Questions we consider include: Where will people really spend time in this space? What will the flow of foot traffic be? Is there easy access to the kitchen island? Does it flow well into the hallways? Does the island protrude into anything? Created to blend the traditional style of the home with the contemporary entertaining style of the home’s newest owners, transforming the kitchen into a functional cooking and entertaining space did not come without a few challenges. The dated kitchen lacked counter, storage and pantry space. As with many older homes, there were sloping floors, chimney chases, and a lack of wall space. Rising to the challenge, I created three unique designs, each one designed to manage these challenges while offering the homeowners their choice of WOW factors. Indeed, the final design includes plenty of necessary counter space, amazing deep drawer storage, and wonderful pantry space. To make cooking easier and far more efficient, I accessorized with complements of oil pullouts, tray dividers, dual waste pull outs, and utensil dividers. The layout is also perfect for two cooking at the same time, and the additional counter seating makes this island the hot spot for all gatherings. To keep the “HOT” out of the hotspot however, guests remain comfortable with the pop up down draft installed alongside the 6 burner range efficiently drawing in that heat. Additionally, the raised bar behind the range top not only covers the down draft when in its raised position, but shields guests from any cooking splatter. 
AND, it’s the perfect bar height for leaning on or standing around those trays of yummy appetizers set upon it during a party! The final transformation of space into the perfect entertaining spot is the bar. The kitchen is open to the dining room so placing a small bar between the two spaces creates an easy bridge for guests to grab a drink without crossing the entire kitchen to the fridge. Lighting from the bar’s mullion wall cabinet softly cascades into the kitchen/seating area, illuminating the homeowner’s fine crystal wine and champagne glasses as it reflects the warmth and style of the new kitchen. Next to the bar is the creative addition of an oversized but streamlined chalk board where the signature drink of the night can be whimsically showcased restaurant style. This project aimed to cater to a multigenerational family that occupies the main floor of their home, with the kitchen being the central hub. With four adults passionate about cooking and entertaining, it was staged to be a unique project! The primary aim was to enhance kitchen traffic flow and functionality, which was accomplished by introducing a nine-foot island with various features: trash/recycle, microwave, and storage for mixing bowls, utensils, and knives. The range top was elegantly positioned at the kitchen's end, framed by a stylish cherry hood with sweeping curves and a classic herringbone tile pattern. This naturally formed a captivating focal point in the room. During the construction, we faced a hurdle due to a cross beam obstructing ceiling venting. The formal dining room had two closely spaced doors, one from the kitchen and one from the hallway. To create a more functional pantry space and provide space for wall ovens, the kitchen entry was closed off. A highly efficient scullery-style pantry was designed with a 96” opening with 48" wide bi-passing doors; it features dedicated countertop zones for various large appliances that would be challenging to lift out of a cabinet. The bookshelves were carefully designed to emphasize balance between the refrigerator and ovens, enhancing the flow and overall continuity of the expanded kitchen. The homeowner's vast cookbook collection, along with a few tchotchkes, adds personal character and color to the space. While this design element removed the option for a countertop next to the refrigerator and ovens, the homeowners were very comfortable with the sizeable adjacent island, which provides an ample landing zone. Finally, the most daring choice is a bold blue hue. This topped with crisp white quartz countertops and warm cherry features, beautifully reflects the vibrant and joyful life of the family. The spacious nook area transformed into an ideal indoor entertainment space that seamlessly complements gatherings inside and out. The choice of cherry cabinets, paired with striking black quartz countertops, was deliberate, as it added warmth to the area and established a solid connection to the stunning outdoor views. Rooted in a mid-century modern aesthetic that aligns seamlessly with the rest of the home, the design embraces clean lines, thoughtful restraint, and intentional details. Minimal gold hardware delicately cuffs the edges of the slab cabinet doors and drawers, adding just enough contrast to elevate the sleek, streamlined look without overwhelming it. While the renovation remained within the existing footprint, one strategic change made a significant impact—introducing an additional entrance from the front door. This simple move opened up the entire first floor, creating a natural connection between spaces and improving the overall flow of the home. 123 With space at a premium, custom cabinetry became essential. Every inch was maximized with purpose—from a narrow pull-out spice rack to a fully concealed dishwasher, and stretching cabinetry to the ceiling —proving that highly functional design can still feel clean and effortless.
