In early 2024, our clients asked for a fresh spin on the A-frame, with black metal outside and white inside for contrast. They wanted windows that capture the mountains perfectly, plus ideas for a future "white" version – all to make a versatile, nature-connected retreat. Getting the most from mountain views without compromising on style or strength was key. We positioned the cabin to highlight the scenery, using tough materials to handle the elements and keep the design simple yet impactful. The concept updates the A-frame with sleek lines – black siding for a modern edge, and a soaring 23-foot great room inside. An open staircase in the center lets light and views flow between floors, making the space feel open and inviting. We applied current building methods for durability, with corrugated metal that looks sharp and stands up to weather. The white interior keeps things bright and easy, blending old charm with new efficiency. Downstairs: a central stair, spacious great room, kitchen with rock outcrop views, and guest bedroom with deck. Up top: loft overlooks below, mountain vistas, and master suite with private east deck – perfect for morning coffee in nature. Kicking off in Summer 2024, this cabin is a modern mountain gem that ties tradition to today. The island is the same Kitchen Craft Paloma maple but in Milstone . On the island you can see where we included a induction cooktop for the client . This cooktop is the Kuraidori Single Induction Cooker . An induction cooker is faster and more energy-efficient than a traditional electric cooking surface. It allows instant control of cooking power similar to gas burners. Photography by Caryn B. Davis Located in the Cornfield Point area of Old Saybrook along Long Island Sound, this project brought a classic, yet forgotten beach house back to life. Through a little detective work and some creative ingenuity, we restored and enhanced the exterior to it’s former glory and transformed the interior to a highly efficient and functional home all the while uplifting its quaint cottage charm. On the exterior, we recreated a wonderful, airy front porch with cozy bench seats that look out to the water. The white cedar shingle siding is pre-bleached with a subtle flair at the bottom and a delicate break at mid-elevation. The asphalt shingles are not only beautifully matched with the siding, but offer superior reflective qualities to dissipate the heat of the summer sun. On the interior, we joined the front seasonal porch with the family room to form a larger, open living and dining space with paneled walls and ceilings anchored by the original round stone fireplace. In the rear, we carefully crafted a galley kitchen and laundry space with an adjacent first floor master suite. The diminutive house and property posed multiple practical and regulatory challenges which were overcome by a strong team effort, due diligence, and a commitment to the process. John R. Making a real impression by designing & building with exceptional people is exactly the effect JL Design & the client as owner-builder have achieved with “Scarborough House” in Scarborough, NSW. The brief required the dwelling to take maximum advantage of stunning views over the ocean & nearby escarpment cliffs. The residence was also to be a contemporary modernist four bedroom family dwelling, maximising built external living & pool areas. The client was extensively involved with the overall design, & carried out material selection, interior detailing and selection of fixtures and fittings. This collective method guaranteed a result where the client as the builder, through continued personal investment throughout the design and construction achieved a stunning result. The concrete, steelwork, windows, timber & various forms of cladding, joinery and concealed lighting are all custom made hand crafted elements. The design called for minimal tolerances, requiring a high level of skill and cooperation between trades. “Scarborough House” features BlueScope Colorbond monument matt ribbed wall cladding with rendered & ‘rendered look’ areas in off-white. A vertical feature hardwood timber screen to the side of the entry softens the ‘industrial’ feel, giving a modernist external appearance. Carefully calculated overhangs allow a passive solar solution to heating & cooling, with efficient reverse-cycle air conditioning required only during weather extremes. Internally, timber floors to the upper living areas give a feel of comfort & warmth. The warm, substantial character of the dwelling is carefully composed by means of the clarity of the detailing, a palette of tactical natural materials and the careful manipulation of light.
