Bi Fold doors conveniently hide away toaster and Kitchen Aid mixer. It's not often that you can take advantage of a lake view out in the suburbs of Chicago. This previously closed off kitchen now features an updated design with a great sightlines of the marvelous backyard landscape. The PB Kitchens Design team eliminated the formal eating area and instead, created an island with four spaces for seating, a second sink, and an abundance of storage. The outdoors is brought in via the large new windows and the earthy grey cabinet colors. Project specs: Cabinets by Signature Custom Cabinetry. The island features a Peruvian walnut island top from Grothouse Lumber. Dark granite countertop on the perimeter cabinetry. Quarter sawn white oak is used on the perimeter and island cabinets. Both are stained a weathered grey with the island a darker shade. Peruvian walnut island top from Grothouse Lumber are signature elements in this transitional kitchen.

Our clients enjoy preparing home cooked meals and baking frequently. Their goal was to create a bright, traffic free space that eliminated collisions and made meal preparation a more pleasurable experience. We also helped them to eliminate counter clutter by adding extra storage throughout.

This project won in the 2013 Builders Association of Metropolitan Pittsburgh Housing Excellence Award for Best Urban Renewal Renovation Project. Mike and Stacy moved to the country to be around the rolling landscape and feed the birds outside their Hampshire country home. After living in the home for over ten years, they knew exactly what they wanted to renovate their 1980’s two story once their children moved out. It all started with the desire to open up the floor plan, eliminating constricting walls around the dining room and the eating area that they didn’t plan to use once they had access to what used to be a formal dining room. They wanted to enhance the already warm country feel their home already had, with some warm hickory cabinets and casual granite counter tops. When removing the pantry and closet between the kitchen and the laundry room, the new design now just flows from the kitchen directly into the smartly appointed laundry area and adjacent powder room. The new eat in kitchen bar is frequented by guests and grand-children, and the original dining table area can be accessed on a daily basis in the new open space. One instant sensation experienced by anyone entering the front door is the bright light that now transpires from the front of the house clear through the back; making the entire first floor feel free flowing and inviting. Base cabinets – other than the sink base – were designed with all drawers in sizes to accommodate various tools and supplies. We eliminated intrusive drawer pulls by specifying Accent C channels. It was imperative to keep such a small work area free of clutter. The solution was to employ Counter Wall cabinets with Tambour doors. The right is for “him” and the left for “her.” These cabinets are only 7” deep, but perfectly hide frequently used items, thereby keeping the countertop uncluttered at all times.

Inspiration for a country porch remodel in Charlotte

In this shot of the kitchen, you can see how we created an peninsula away from the primary food preparation area. With seating for two or more, placing the peninsula here has eliminated traffic jams that were a frequent occurrence around their old island. The peninsula was also the ideal space to locate the under counter microwave and additional storage.

Awnings not only keep the area underneath it cool but also the door and windows, where sun can enter and heat the room. By blocking the sun on the outside you keep the house cooler, eliminating the need for frequent air-conditioning.
