The large main barn room embraces the main living spaces, including the kitchen. The barn room is anchored on the north with a stone fireplace and on the south with a large bay window. The wing to the east organizes the entry hall and sleeping rooms.

Guided by the essence of wabi-sabi, my intention was to curate Wabi Sabi Refuge as a sacred space that nurtures an ethereal atmosphere, summoning a sincere connection with the surrounding world. Deliberate choices of muted hues and minimalist elements foster an environment of uncluttered serenity, encouraging introspection and contemplation. Embracing the innate imperfections and distinctive qualities of the carefully selected materials and objects added an exquisite touch of organic allure, instilling an authentic reverence for the beauty inherent in nature's creations. Wabi Sabi Refuge serves as a sanctuary, an evocative invitation for visitors to embrace the sublime simplicity, find solace in the imperfect, and uncover the profound and tranquil beauty that wabi-sabi unveils.

Set on a historic street in Logan Square, this brick foursquare home brims with carefully restored original character—lots of woodwork, stained glass, and even its century-old dining room light fixture. Our clients wanted to bring that same richness into their furnishings, creating a design forward family space that could stand up against two young boys and a pooch. Bold choices set the tone: a wallpapered dining room ceiling, a custom upholstered curved sofa, and a sculptural headboard in the primary bedroom. Thoughtful lighting, vintage and custom rugs, and that perfect amount of patina help bridge the gap between old and new. This design embraces the open-concept floor plan by dissolving boundaries and encouraging organic interactions between the spaces within the home and with the surrounding landscape. At the heart of this transformation stands a strategically positioned wood-burning stove, which can be enjoyed from the dining or living areas, perfect for cozy winter nights. The kitchen dining space emerges as the vibrant epicenter of this family-friendly home with a fluid transition to the patio and garden. Vaulted ceilings accentuated with skylights illuminate the space with natural light, creating an airy, expansive feel; while the French oak flooring introduces a touch of grounding warmth and nature. Project Overview: Our team embarked on a thoughtful renovation journey, transforming an aging deck into a harmonious blend of indoor-outdoor living. The goal was to create a space that honors tradition while embracing modern comfort. Existing Deck Transformation: Original Deck: The existing deck, weathered by years of memories, retained its original purpose—a place where sunlight dances and conversations flow. Uncovered and open to the elements, it stood as a testament to countless gatherings and sun-kissed afternoons. Screen Porch Conversion: Half of the deck underwent a magical metamorphosis, emerging as a screen porch—a sanctuary where the outdoors and indoors intertwine. The screen porch now cradles moments of quiet contemplation, protected from bugs and gentle rain. Design Considerations: Seamless Transition: The transition between the deck and the screen porch is seamless, honoring the house’s original footprint. The shared boundary invites a gentle flow—a dance of light and shadow. Cantilevered Roof: To preserve the deck’s sunlit expanse, we cantilevered the roof over the screen porch. This architectural choice ensures that both spaces coexist harmoniously, each with its unique purpose.
