Completed in 2015, this 4 BR, 2 1/2 bath was designed for a developer with a intolerably tight budget. Our simple solution employs a straightforward mix of flowing spaces borrowed from California great room houses with design elements found in more traditional residential design.
The house is entered through a generous entry hall flanked by a formal Dining Room on one side and a Home Office/Den on the other. The far end of this Entry Hall deposits into a large Great Room and open kitchen that is this home's gathering and entertainment hub. A small alcove at the end of the kitchen allows for everyday meals while the island functions as this entire space's focal point. Completing the entertainment concept of this level is a covered porch accessed through a sliding door in the Family Room.
The upper level is accessed via a stair at one end of the plan and is organized around a wide hallway that terminates in a tech space for kids. 3 generous children's bedrooms and an ample Master Suite with a view toward the Olympic Mountains complete this level. Finish selections throughout the house were purposely kept clean, light and simple. The exterior form of the house, while simple, allows for a variety of roof schemes that appeal to different price points in the marketplace. We also designed a bonus room option that can be accessed via the stair and resides over the garage.

This premier project centers on a sleek rectangular pool featuring a deep, inviting blue interior perfectly framed by bright, light-toned coping. The design always incorporates a generous, shallow tanning ledge for ultimate sunbathing comfort, often allowing for in-pool furniture.
An integrated raised spa serves as a luxurious sanctuary, clad either in dark stacked stone or shimmering blue mosaic tile. This spa is frequently elevated and accented by a dramatic water feature, employing elegant sheer descent scuppers or waterfalls that cascade into the water, providing a constant element of soothing sound and motion.
The surrounding leisure area showcases sophisticated landscaping and hardscaping, utilizing both expansive, light-toned paving and lush artificial turf. The turf areas are often sectioned by bold, geometric stepping stones, enhancing the modern aesthetic. The retreat thoughtfully creates distinct zones for activity and relaxation, ranging from built-in lounge areas with square fire pits to elaborate covered pavilions with integrated seating, fireplaces, and entertainment systems. This versatile environment successfully combines high-end style with family-friendly recreation, sometimes even including a custom putting green or an in-pool basketball hoop.

Our clients, a couple in their early 40s with 3 young kids, bought their 1990s Colonial Revival style home about 8 years earlier and have been tackling updates to the home and property ever since.
Both the husband and wife grew up on the Maine coast before settling permanently in New Hampshire, so their love of blues, grays, and a simple New England aesthetic came as no surprise. But while the wife longed for a few pops of color, the husband was definitely a little suspect of pattern and richer hues. We created a space that evoked both warmth and serenity, with a little bit of New England preppy style.
We employed sky blue grasscloth, a traditional-with-a-twist lucite chandelier, and a fresh drapes + Roman shade combination for semi-formal style.

The owners of this large custom home in Big Bear Lake wanted to recreate the ambiance of the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite, one of their favorite places. On the outside of the log-sided structure, a local artist was employed to add Native American and totem motifs. The large tamarack-style rock pillars frame the entryway and support the porte cochre. Beechwood sits on the edge of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in Oxfordshire. Employing high-quality materials, simple detailing and robust forms, the design produced a contemporary and sustainable home appropriate to its context.
The materials used in the project push conventional design boundaries but sit together harmoniously in the woodland setting. Blue/black engineering brickwork combine with pre-weathered Corten steel cladding, enabling the house to bleed into the landscape.
Implementing energy saving solutions was integral to the success of this project and was a key part of the client brief. The design followed best practice in nine categories of sustainable design: energy and CO2 emissions, water, materials, surface water run-off, waste, pollution, health and wellbeing, management and ecology. Beechwood achieved a Level 4 certificate under The Code for Sustainable Homes.

Every detail of this European villa-style home exudes a uniquely finished feel. Our design goals were to invoke a sense of travel while simultaneously cultivating a homely and inviting ambience. This project reflects our commitment to crafting spaces seamlessly blending luxury with functionality.
The living room drew its inspiration from a collection of pillows characterized by rich velvet, plaid, and paisley patterns in shades of blue and red. This design approach conveyed a British Colonial style with a touch of Ralph Lauren's distinctive flair. A blue chenille fabric was employed to upholster a tufted sofa adorned with leather and brass bridle bit accents on the sides. At the center of the room is a striking plaid ottoman, complemented by a pair of blood-red leather chairs positioned to capture a picturesque lake view. Enhancing this view are paisley drapes, which extend from floor to pine ceiling.

Originally submitted for the Model Homes category, the judges felt this entry deserved an ARDA in Design Detail. Inspired by the British Revolution, the rustic yet modern style employs a neutral color scheme with various textures. Traditional elements paired with refined furniture and contemporary finishes result in a design inspired by history. Hues of gray as well as rustic wood paneling create continuity through the home. Creating each space to accommodate a family was challenging due to the narrow width of the townhome.

Louisa, San Clemente Coastal Modern Architecture
The brief for this modern coastal home was to create a place where the clients and their children and their families could gather to enjoy all the beauty of living in Southern California. Maximizing the lot was key to unlocking the potential of this property so the decision was made to excavate the entire property to allow natural light and ventilation to circulate through the lower level of the home.
A courtyard with a green wall and olive tree act as the lung for the building as the coastal breeze brings fresh air in and circulates out the old through the courtyard.
The concept for the home was to be living on a deck, so the large expanse of glass doors fold away to allow a seamless connection between the indoor and outdoors and feeling of being out on the deck is felt on the interior. A huge cantilevered beam in the roof allows for corner to completely disappear as the home looks to a beautiful ocean view and Dana Point harbor in the distance. All of the spaces throughout the home have a connection to the outdoors and this creates a light, bright and healthy environment.
Passive design principles were employed to ensure the building is as energy efficient as possible. Solar panels keep the building off the grid and and deep overhangs help in reducing the solar heat gains of the building. Ultimately this home has become a place that the families can all enjoy together as the grand kids create those memories of spending time at the beach.
