When Cummings Architects first met with the owners of this understated country farmhouse, the building’s layout and design was an incoherent jumble. The original bones of the building were almost unrecognizable. All of the original windows, doors, flooring, and trims – even the country kitchen – had been removed. Mathew and his team began a thorough design discovery process to find the design solution that would enable them to breathe life back into the old farmhouse in a way that acknowledged the building’s venerable history while also providing for a modern living by a growing family. The redesign included the addition of a new eat-in kitchen, bedrooms, bathrooms, wrap around porch, and stone fireplaces. To begin the transforming restoration, the team designed a generous, twenty-four square foot kitchen addition with custom, farmers-style cabinetry and timber framing. The team walked the homeowners through each detail the cabinetry layout, materials, and finishes. Salvaged materials were used and authentic craftsmanship lent a sense of place and history to the fabric of the space. The new master suite included a cathedral ceiling showcasing beautifully worn salvaged timbers. The team continued with the farm theme, using sliding barn doors to separate the custom-designed master bath and closet. The new second-floor hallway features a bold, red floor while new transoms in each bedroom let in plenty of light. A summer stair, detailed and crafted with authentic details, was added for additional access and charm. Finally, a welcoming farmer’s porch wraps around the side entry, connecting to the rear yard via a gracefully engineered grade. This large outdoor space provides seating for large groups of people to visit and dine next to the beautiful outdoor landscape and the new exterior stone fireplace. Though it had temporarily lost its identity, with the help of the team at Cummings Architects, this lovely farmhouse has regained not only its former charm but also a new life through beautifully integrated modern features designed for today’s family. Designed by Akram Aljahmi of Reico Kitchen & Bath in King of Prussia, PA in collaboration with Property Remodeling Group, this transitional inspired kitchen design features white and grey finishes complemented by a bold splash of blue tile. The kitchen design features Merillat Classic kitchen cabinets in Portrait door style with 5 piece drawer head in 2 finishes. The wall cabinets features a painted white Cotton finish and the base cabinets feature a painted grey Graphite finish. Kitchen countertops are engineered quartz in the color Carrera Marmi from Q by MSI. The kitchen also features a stunning blue herringbone tile back splash with 3x10 tiles. According to the client, "Akram solved a fundamental function problem that I could not see a solution for. His re-imagining of how the main floor of our home could function was a dramatic shift that I can't wait to experience as part of day-to-day life. The lower level of your home will never be an afterthought when you build with our team. ​Our recent Artisan home featured lower level spaces for every family member to enjoy including an athletic court, home gym, video game room, sauna, and walk-in wine display. Cut out the wasted space in your home by incorporating areas that your family will actually use!

There are several unique elements to this project, one example being the columns that separate the floating kitchen shelves. The team created these columns and shelves by dealing with an existing condition (the neighbors pipes). The masonry wall that is shown on the interior of the kitchen is also the exterior of the building, so the pipes couldn’t be removed or hidden. There was electrical in that wall, as well, so the team built all of this into the design of the kitchen.

The serene owner's bath gave our team a blank slate to work from. When we were originally appointed to furnish the home, the primary bath featured white cabinets and builder grade mirrors and vanity lights. We dressed up the spacious bath by painting the existing cabinets a deep sapphire blue to coordinate with the adjoining bedroom walls. Our team also brought in custom framed vanity mirrors and antique brass designer plumbing and lighting fixtures, including the alabaster chandelier over the tub. We finished off the bath and the remainder of the home by painting the interior doors black and changing out the door hardware to an antique brass finish.
