This project involved the construction of a large circular deck at a confidential federal headquarters, designed to enhance employee wellness and outdoor engagement. The deck functions as a relaxing park-like space where employees can step outside, walk, and enjoy a break in a natural setting. A second large circular walking deck was also constructed to encourage movement throughout the workday, providing a functional and inviting space for daily activity. This Decatur family came to us looking for a complete renovation of their under-utilized backyard and small, outdoor deck. Their wish list included a functional design that would incorporate indoor-outdoor living and tie in with their Decatur home’s transitional aesthetic. The result is a stunning outdoor living area with a wealth of options for relaxing, entertaining, and outdoor dining. This classic southern-style covered porch, with its open gable roof, features a tongue and groove ceiling painted in a soft shade of blue and centers around an eye-catching wood burning brick fireplace with mounted tv and ample seating in a cheerful bright blue and green color scheme. A new set of French doors off the kitchen creates a seamless transition to the outdoor living room where a small, unused closet was revamped into a stylish, custom built-in bar complete with honed black granite countertops, floating shelves, and a stainless-steel beverage fridge. The lower deck includes a separate grilling station and leads down to the private backyard. A thoughtful landscape plan was designed to complement the natural surroundings and enhance the peaceful ambience of this gorgeous in-town retreat. An added bonus is the new storage room built under the deck with a set of custom French doors that make it easily accessible for our homeowners to use.

This home is remarkable in many ways. It features a simple but unique design that maximizes the site and breathtaking views. The home was originally built by a family who owned a local mill and who had choice selection of the wood used in its construction. We were brought in to restore the integrity of the 40-year-old deck, ensuring the new one preserved the precise aesthetic of the original. The upper level features a cantilevered deck that wraps around the house without obscuring the view from the windows below. The structure of the deck was constructed of abnormally large rough-sawn fir joists milled to custom specifications. The joists run through the entire floor framing of the home and extend out as deck joists. Since the deck joists were so integral to the framing, preservation of the integrity of this structure was paramount. The original cedar deck boards were failing, but the beautiful fir joists were well-preserved and could be fortified. After demoing the existing deck, we carefully removed all signs of dry rot, then tested the integrity of the fir joists. To ensure the longevity of the new deck, we added joists as needed to improve rigidity and weather-sealed the tops of each one with joist tape and metal flashing. For the new decking, we decided on a very strong and durable solution, IPE wood, which we had milled to custom specifications to match the original boards. Working with this extremely hard wood has its challenges, but it was by far the best choice for this project. We honored the design of the original railing by crafting a near replica. Admittedly, we tweaked a few dimensions, enhanced details of the assembly and added a few custom accents.

The original area was a small concrete patio under the covered area. We decided to make it a deck, all they way between the garage and house to create an outdoor mulit-living area. We used Trex Composite Decking in the Enhance Natural Series. The main decking color is Toasted Sand, then double picture framed the areas with Coastal Bluff – which these 2 colors work out great together. We then installed the Westbury Full Aluminum Railing in the Tuscany Series in black. Finish touches were Post Cap Lights and then dot lights on the stair risers. New large area for entertaining which the homeowners will love.
