2011 NARI CAPITAL COTY FINALIST AWARD WINNER Project Scope-- The owners of this 1990’s colonial home were seeking to convert the existing space-constricted builder-grade kitchen into a generously-apportioned Tuscan-style country kitchen with lots of natural light, high-end appointments and a warmly textured interior design concept. Among other features they sought a mid-room island that would house critical appliances, complete the work triangle and provide dining counter space for three. They also wanted to include a professional-grade gas range. Challenges-- Situated between dining room and family room, the existing kitchen was small and poorly planned. The sink faced a blank wall and the appliances were inadequate for the owner’s gourmet cooking ambitions. To create the desired footprint, the contractor, Michael Nash Design, Build & Homes, created a plan that called for consolidating square footage in several rooms adjacent to the kitchen. This entailed removing two load bearing walls– one between the kitchen and dining room, a second separating the kitchen and family room– and shifting loads to newly installed structural supports carefully concealed within the resultant “open” floor plan. To accommodate new appliances (and work efficiencies) called for by this radically altered space plan, the design located the new professional gas range and other key features in the footprint formerly occupied by the breakfast room, a change that takes advantage of opportunities for a higher cathedral ceiling, better natural lighting and greater space. Solutions-- With this space plan resolved, the design team could now eliminate a picture window on the west elevation, designing a new elevation to accommodate a stucco cooktop flanked by a pair of custom Palladium windows. A side elevation slider was replaced with a French door. Infrastructure considerations included introducing gas lines needed for the 48” Viking cooktop range and re-routing plumbing. The 5’ x 9’ granite-surfaced custom designed island includes the primary kitchen sink, a dishwasher, microwave and dining overhang that provided seating for up to four. On another wall, the design called for installing ceiling flush “beaded” display pantries with open bookcases, and routed-in plumbing for a water fountain, a faucet and an ice-making machine. Glazed maple and cherry cabinetry increased available storage by over 50%. A recessed space was also created for a built-in vertical wine rack. Style-appropriate terra cotta tiling with mosaic bordering detailing extends into the home’s foyer. Other finishing work elements include crown molding with rounded turn posts and corbels.

We wanted to take the open loft above the living room and turn it into a functional space that took advantage of the amazing views overlooking the lake. Since this is an investment property used for vacation rentals, extra beds are always welcome, so we used the nook area for a full-sized futon, that doubles as an additional seating/reading area. This space also features an additional conversation seating area, a fully stocked bookshelf, and a small desk, and printer to create a business center for guests. My Sister's Garage spruced up the space with some great vintage and salvage accents, a repainted vintage coffee table, desk, and chair, and some custom throw pillows. The second story project entailed building an addition above a portion of the existing house, while leaving the garage as a single story. The exterior is designed with a mixture of lap, shingle and board and batten siding. The entry is accentuated with a porch roof, columns with a stone base, and stained wood ceiling. This three-bedroom three bath residence underwent a comprehensive renovation that entailed a color palette of whites and grays with dark wood as designed by Interiors by Design West. The whole house was updated with wood and tile flooring, new doors, trim and plumbing throughout. The laundry room and bathrooms were modernized with Woodmode cabinetry and quartz countertops. The kitchen was completely remodeled with Woodmode cabinetry, quartz countertops, Thermador appliances and updated lighting. The Cambridge Terrace Condominium project entailed a complete renovation of a triple-decker building into three luxury condominiums. A combination of white and black throughout creates a clean contrast, while the clear coat wood floor adds a splash of color and natural material. Outdoor decks and large double hung windows throughout flood the interior with natural light year round.

Our Clients wanted to update a family lakeside retreat with a modern sensibility. The resulting design is a warm, contemporary space intimate enough for the couple to enjoy alone, but flexible to accommodate additional guests. This project entailed the teardown of an existing structure and new construction of a two-story building. As required by zoning, the existing footprint was maintained. On the first floor, a traditional woodstove juxtaposed to a floating stair anchors the open floor plan. Large picture windows provide lake views for the dining and living areas. An adjacent galley kitchen makes for easy entertaining. The first floor also includes a guest suite. The second floor includes a master suite, secondary seating area, floor to ceiling built-ins, office space and an upper deck. Barn and pocket doors create additional sleeping accommodations as needed. Cable railings are used throughout so as to not impede sightlines.

We designed a new first floor at this 1980's contemporary in Old Greenwich. This entailed designing a new angre wood kitchen with frosted glass and metal uppers, opening up the wall between the living and dining rooms and adding a large dual level porch and deck. Richard Basic: Project Architect

Welcome to your new favorite spot in the house! With this showpiece Custom Wine Cellar, why would you ever have a party anywhere else? Complete with an adjacent room with a large tasting table and space to entertain, this homeowner thought of it all! This unique Custom wine room in a gorgeous neighborhood in the La Jolla and Del Mar region in sunny San Diego, California is an art piece in itself surrounded by even more art pieces. The Wine Room Construction entailed unique custom fitted racking, tiering down from about ten feet on one end of the room to just below eight feet on the other. Producing high quality wine racking for a cellar like this is no easy feat, but that is exactly what the wine cellar builders and team at vintage cellars do best! The glass front and custom wine cellar door, highlighted with metal framing in an interesting checkered pattern throughout, also posed a unique challenge within this wine cellar space. Glass walls, although absolutely stunning, can reduce the cooling capabilities within the wine room itself- simply due to the non insulating properties of glass. Whenever glass is utilized within a custom wine cellar, we always make sure to install dual paned thermal insulated glass. Within the wine cellar itself, The racking is made of all heart redwood with a clear finish, with single deep individual bottle storage above a high reveal display row and double deep bottle storage below. The amount of custom and unique features in this gorgeous custom wine cellar in La Jolla are almost too numerous to count! Take a closer peek and you will notice that the walls are covered with a custom redwood paneling with custom moldings throughout. The interestingly shaped island also has room for large format bottle storage and a small chilled wine refrigerator specifically for whites ready to be served. Nestled in the heart of Kirkland, this condominium underwent a breathtaking transformation. While most rooms had a good layout, with living and dining room windows offering a stunning view of Lake Washington against the backdrop of majestic mountains, I opted to give the kitchen and both bathrooms a complete layout makeover. This intricate project necessitated the expertise of structural and mechanical engineers. Now, let's delve into the kitchen remodel—a true masterpiece. It entailed dramatic changes in layout, plumbing, and equipment placement. We closely collaborated with the client to craft a brand-new design. A primary goal was to create a spacious, functional kitchen space with ample storage, perfect for family gatherings. By removing two interior walls and retaining a structural column, we fashioned an inviting island with a cozy seating area.

The master details a spacious room sitting under a 9-foot ceiling height and brightened by three tall windows. Behind barn doors lies the master bathroom, which entails two separate, large vanities with extra space for linen, a 6-foot deep soaking tub, a separate shower, and a compartmentalized toilet. From the master bath access is granted into the master walk-in closet.

Our client requested a design that reflected their need to renovate their dated bathroom into a transitional floor plan that would provide accessibility and function. The new shower design consists of a pony wall with a glass enclosure that has beautiful details of brushed nickel square glass clamps. The interior shower fittings entail geometric lines that lend a contemporary finish. A curbless shower and linear drain added an extra dimension of accessibility to the plan. In addition, a balance bar above the accessory niche was affixed to the wall for extra stability. The shower area also includes a folding teak wood bench seat that also adds to the comfort of the bathroom as well as to the accessibility factors. Improved lighting was created with LED Damp-location rated recessed lighting. LED sconces were also used to flank the Robern medicine cabinet which created realistic and flattering light. This design build project entailed a custom renovation of a two family home in Cambridge. The Ossido line stems from a wager against time, in an attempt to crystallise a material at a specific point in its life and have it stay that way forever. Specifically, it entails the reproduction of a oxidation process on slabs of copper and metal, which generates a very strong and rich colour, yet which inevitably disappears as the oxidation process progresses.

Bathroom Creation - This project entailed the construction of a half bathroom adjoining the master bedroom and kitchen to add an additional "bathroom" in the house. A washer and dryer closet was demo-ed to make way for new plumbing for the new bathroom (Toilet and sink) Result beautiful bathroom!

This kitchen facelift entailed; complex installation of a range hood and ventilation system going through a 24" plaster and stone wall. Some existing cabinetry altering to suite new appliances. New eatery area with new cabinets and Quartz top. A matching china hutch cabinet in the dinning room. Fresh paint throughout space. New appliances (gas range, wall ovens, dishwasher and microwave).
