When your apartment boasts spectacular river and city views, you want this vista to be the star attraction. The best strategy for achieving this is employing a quiet, serene and monochromatic theme. Here it’s ¾” rift cut white oak with a natural finish throughout. Flat panel doors with beveled integral finger recesses reinforce the clean concept. White oak flooring adds to the calm environment. One of the home’s studies is adjacent to the dining room, separated only by sliding smoked glass doors. The study can be closed off while entertaining, but the scenery is still within view. Bookcases lining opposite walls feature drawer storage on the bottom and 2” wide floor-to-ceiling stiles dividing the sections and contributing a prominent vertical element. 2” thick wood countertops match the 2” shelves that incorporate routed grooves in their undersides housing LED strips to illuminate the contents. On one wall is a suspended desktop that aligns with the countertops and provides a convenient computer station. Furnishings wisely complement the monochromatic motif with upholstery, throw pillows, drapery and area rugs in shades of cream and beige. But the wooden legs, dining table and accent pieces deliver touches of contrast with their dark stained walnut finishes. The goal of this master suite remodel was to design a luxurious yet simple environment that was not only beautiful but also comfortable, and designer Lori Wiles brought the transformation to life. The remodel was a transformation of the unused storage area in the bottom level of the clients’ home. Wiles' creative problem solving did more than just hide basement remodel problems like low ductwork and poorly located pipes. Instead, these obstacles served as a source of inspiration for some of the most interesting aspects of her design, such as the angular wood-paneled headboard wall with built-in nightstands. Following a stone, fire, water, and wood theme, the materials used in this master suite strongly relate to nature. Water flows to the tub from the stone accent wall in the bathroom, and an opposing stone wall in the bedroom creates a dramatic backdrop for a seating area. Both walls contain candle-filled niches and Cherry wood is employed throughout, creating warmth and continuity. To further achieve the natural look and feel of the bathroom, Wiles incorporated a variety of stones. The shower and immediate area around the freestanding tub feature pebble accent flooring that complement the surrounding large, rectangular tile floors. Eldorado Stone’s Black River Stacked Stone was chosen because it offered different textures and dimensions of the black, rugged, stacked stone, resulting in an organic environment that provides relief from the flat surfaces. By using quality materials such as Eldorado Stone, designer Lori Wiles was able to create a zen-like space that exceeded her client’s expectations. When your apartment boasts spectacular river and city views, you want this vista to be the star attraction. The best strategy for achieving this is employing a quiet, serene and monochromatic theme. Here it’s ¾” rift cut white oak with a natural finish throughout. Flat panel doors with beveled integral finger recesses reinforce the clean concept. White oak flooring adds to the calm environment. One of the home’s studies is adjacent to the dining room, separated only by sliding smoked glass doors. The study can be closed off while entertaining, but the scenery is still within view. Bookcases lining opposite walls feature drawer storage on the bottom and 2” wide floor-to-ceiling stiles dividing the sections and contributing a prominent vertical element. 2” thick wood countertops match the 2” shelves that incorporate routed grooves in their undersides housing LED strips to illuminate the contents. On one wall is a suspended desktop that aligns with the countertops and provides a convenient computer station. Furnishings wisely complement the monochromatic motif with upholstery, throw pillows, drapery and area rugs in shades of cream and beige. But the wooden legs, dining table and accent pieces deliver touches of contrast with their dark stained walnut finishes. We were given the challenge of designing a house overlooking a pond on a site constrained by wetlands. Our client had an interest in permanence and solidity and a desire to work with architectural concrete. Additionally, the client desired interiors that would showcase their substantial art collection. Our design approach began with the footprint of an L-shaped courtyard house, which in part, was determined by the limited buildable area. The house is sited on a natural rise in the land, allowing the first floor elevation to rise 15 ft above the pond’s surface; this height provides dynamic views through the trees that separate the house from the pond. Ultimately, our design leverages the inherent capabilities of architectural concrete i.e. its structural capacity; the material allows for bold cantilevers and expanses of glass, creating greater transparency between interior and exterior environments. The interior palette is comprised of rift sawn oak with 16-inch wide oak plank flooring, oak casework and millwork, a stainless steel and glass main staircase, and minimalist concrete details throughout. On the upper level, the plan accommodates a master bedroom suite, three children’s bedrooms, and a family room. The first floor includes a guest bedroom, living room, kitchen, dining room, office, and family room. The ground level has a recreational room, a mudroom, and office/studio. The site plan employs native plantings and includes a small resistance pool in the courtyard. Concrete will be utilized for all of the house’s structural and insulation components. This method modulates the fluctuation of interior temperature, creating both an energy-efficient envelope and enough concrete mass to keep temperatures moderate and consistent throughout a 24-hour day. The employment of triple-glazed windows and a triple-glazed aluminum curtain wall further increases the project’s energy efficiency and allows the house to have abundant glass. Natural light permeates the interior and affords spectacular view in all directions of both Todd Pond and the neighboring woodlands.

The goal of this master suite remodel was to design a luxurious yet simple environment that was not only beautiful but also comfortable, and designer Lori Wiles brought the transformation to life. The remodel was a transformation of the unused storage area in the bottom level of the clients’ home. Wiles' creative problem solving did more than just hide basement remodel problems like low ductwork and poorly located pipes. Water flows to the tub from the stone accent wall in the bathroom, and an opposing stone wall in the bedroom creates a dramatic backdrop for a seating area. Both walls contain candle-filled niches and Cherry wood is employed throughout, creating warmth and continuity. To further achieve the natural look and feel of the bathroom, Wiles incorporated a variety of stones. The shower and immediate area around the freestanding tub feature pebble accent flooring that complement the surrounding large, rectangular tile floors. Eldorado Stone’s Black River Stacked Stone was chosen because it offered different textures and dimensions of the black, rugged, stacked stone, resulting in an organic environment that provides relief from the flat surfaces.
