Architecture and interior design go hand in hand. Our highest priority is the quality of the space and The Retreat presented unique design opportunities. Bathed in natural light, the shower, which includes a re-circulating waterfall, occupies the center of the room, wrapped in cedar. The “tree”, which represents the earth, envelops water, the source of life. The remaining functions line the perimeter of the room.
All the materials in the room are sustainable in accordance with current practices. The furniture is sustainable. The fabrics are sustainable. Even the art is sustainable! There is no excess, just the necessary components to create an inviting and comfortable environment to promote relaxation and well-being.
Simple, clean, and contemporary, the Retreat is a place to unwind, take a nap, read, meditate – whichever your favorite way to relieve stress – indoors.

This house, built in the 1960s, sits southfacing on a terrific wooded lot in Bethesda, Maryland.
The owners desire a whole-house renovation which would improve the general building fabric and systems, and extend the sense of living out of doors in all seasons.
The original sixties-modern character is preserved and the renovation extends the design forward into a contemporary, modern approach. Connections to and through the site are enhanced through the creation of new larger window and door openings.
Screened porches and decks perch above the sloped and wooded site. The new kitchen and bathrooms allow for opportunities to feel out-of -doors while preparing, cooking, dining, and bathing.
Smart passive strategies guide the environmental choices for this project, including envelope improvements, updated mechanical systems, and on-site stormwater management.

This sunfilled four season porch boasts a fabulous green blue paint that coaxes the outdoors in. Environmentally friendly hemp was used for the sofa as well as recycled glass for the table lamp. Woven grasses backed with natural cloth provide warmth in the winter and keep the summer sun at bay.

Make it rain because we’ve got you covered! Aquastorm is an anti-flooding permeable driveway paver with through-the-roof infiltration rates. It is designed for the modern home that enjoys linear looks and green initiatives. Enjoy an eco-friendly driveway with Aquastrom and expand your pleasure to your backyard; this environmentally friendly hardscape product allows grass to grow between it, so you won’t have to compromise the beauty of concrete with Mother Nature. The integrated spacers allow easy installation by keeping the joint space between each paver consistent for super straight lines that allow water to trickle directly through. A meadow garden surrounds the property and provides a transition zone between the lawn and woodland border. Installing a meadow allowed us to reduce the amount of traditional lawn around the house, an important factor for this LEED Gold certified property. The meadow is low maintenance (mowed once a year), is drought tolerant, and provides an incredible show of color throughout the summer and fall.
