Old-World Charm in Alabama
Private Residence / Mountain Brook, Alabama
Architect: Jeffrey Dungan
Builder: Bradford Residential Building Company
E. F. San Juan created and supplied stair parts, exterior beams, brackets, rafters, paneling, and exterior moulding for this residence in the charming community of Mountain Brook, Alabama.
Challenges:
The most significant challenge on this project was the curved stair system just inside the main entrance. Its unique starting newel also served as a lamppost that bathes the foyer in a warm, welcoming light. Each piece of millwork supplied for this stunning residence needed to reflect the Old English village–inspired town while upholding modern standards of excellence.
Solution:
We worked with our stair parts partner, Oak Pointe, to build the white oak newel components for the main stairway, then we customized them further by hand at the E. F. San Juan plant. The details include a Gothic relief and the tapered radius section of the newel’s upper half. The result is truly beautiful and serves as the focal point of this old-world stair system. Evoking a feeling of historic charm, the millwork throughout this residence adds those characterizing elements that make all the difference in custom luxury homes.

ENGINEERING + SCIENCE: Award of Excellence
PROJECT: Chatham University Eden Hall Campus
CLIENT: Chatham University
ENGINEERS: Civil & Environmental Consultants, Inc.; Biohabitats; Interface Engineering
ARCHITECTURE FIRM: Mithūn
CONTRACTORS: SOTA Construction Services, Inc.
PHOTOGRAPHER: Annie O’Neill Photography
DESCRIPTION: The Eden Hall Campus’ stormwater and wastewater management systems employ a number of proven strategies and technologies in combination and with a unique decentralized approach. A “treat it where it falls” approach utilizes a series of rain gardens around the site to manage small drainage areas while roof runoff is directed to a 50,000 gallon retention tank and is repurposed for site irrigation needs. The wastewater treatment system includes individual building primary treatment tanks and two sub-surface constructed wetland cells. Site design and landscape not only performs a functional purpose for stormwater and wastewater but also provides an aesthetic bridge between the architecture and the site.
JURY COMMENTS: This building reminds us of the importance of water, and also basic and natural technologies that are highly effective. The complete built project functions as an efficient machine while never giving the appearance of being a machine. As a first phase of a proposed new campus, the standards are already set impressively high.

As New England's premier custom glass design firm, we were proud to bring this stunning orangery addition to life for a Carlisle, Massachusetts family we’ve worked with on two other occasions. Orangeries, historically designed for cultivating citrus trees, have evolved into luxurious glass-enclosed spaces offering year-round natural light and connection to the outdoors. This custom orangery demonstrates Sunspace Design's mastery of blending the classic style with modern amenities.
Over two years of meticulous planning culminated in the results you see here. Drawn to our local reputation and in-house design and fabrication capabilities, the clients collaborated closely with us to realize their vision. Spanning an impressive 14' x 22'6", the orangery brings an air of grandeur to the rear of the colonial-style home while complementing the existing architecture.
The centerpiece is the custom hip-style glass roof, outfitted with insulated safety glass, framed in rich sapele mahogany, and adorned with copper glazing, flashing, and capping. Blue reflective glass set in the roof creates a captivating interplay of light throughout the day and contributes to the space’s lasting elegance. The roof line is set in from the walls to create a perimeter soffit on the interior, typical of orangeries. Custom wet bar cabinetry, crown moldings, and tilework complete the orangery, reflecting the family's discerning taste and creating an excellent spot for entertaining.
Our role as general contractor, our design expertise, and our fabrication abilities ensured this project's seamless execution. From engineered CAD drawings to the intricate roof assembly, the Sunspace commitment to quality is evident in the finished result. This space is much more than an addition; it's become the heart of the family’s home, where joyous holiday gatherings are hosted, and a touch of luxury is brought to everyday living.

ARCHITECTURAL DETAIL + CRAFTSMANSHIP: Award of Excellence
PROJECT: DISCRETE HOUSE
CLIENT: Dino DeConcini, Elizabeth Murfee, and Keith DeConcini
ARCHITECTURE FIRM: FOLAN+TRUMBLE
ENGINEERS: Harris Engineering Service; PH Mechanical Engineering; Balda Electrical Consulting
CONTRACTORS: Steve Hazen, Ltd.
PHOTOGRAPHER: Liam Frederick Photography
DESCRIPTION: The DISCRETE HOUSE project involved the adaptive reuse of a territorial adobe mud block structure constructed in the 1930s into a permanent residence for retirement for the clients and the accommodation of their adult, disabled son. Each intervention made was human centered and focused on the orientation/re-orientation in response to the needs of the inhabitants, utilizing a language of detailing and materiality that makes clear the distinction between past and present, as well as the integration of strategically placed sustainable technologies such as water harvesting cisterns and a photovoltaic array.
JURY COMMENTS: The masterful attention to details and reoccurring themes make for marvelously simple looking spaces with a very sophisticated richness. How the glass, wood, and metal come together is beautiful. The architect and craftsman worked very well together.

The best feature of bi-fold doors is their versatile design. Made from panels that can retract and fold, they are an excellent way to expand small spaces. You can open an entire wall for a seamless connection to the outdoors, or use the man door for quick and private access.

Sleek lines dominate this sophisticated mid mod home. Here, the fridge is disguised with wood paneled doors.
Originally designed by esteemed PNW mid century architect, Ralph Anderson, this renovation won Historic Remodel Excellence award with Master Builders of King and Snohomish County in 2024.

This 1927 home in historic Dilworth underwent extensive renovations after our client closed on the house in early 2016. For an almost 100 year old house, it has an excellent flow. It boasts a rare open floor plan with connected kitchen, dining room and den without sacrificing an ounce of charm but the wall colors and finishes were a disaster when we took possession.
Fresh paint and a brand new kitchen created the perfect backdrop for blending her existing furniture with infusions of newness. The entire den seating area was brand new. Furniture from Charles Stewart Company and media console by Lorts.
A neat feature of this home is that it showcases the work of 3 local artists:
Marcy Gregg: Original oil featured above master fireplace
Karen O'Leary, Studio KMO: Set of 3 custom cut local neighborhood maps in hall
Lindsey Lindquist: Large commissioned piece in family room, pair stairwell paintings
