Modern glass house set in the landscape evokes a midcentury vibe. A modern gas fireplace divides the living area with a polished concrete floor from the greenhouse with a gravel floor. The frame is painted steel with aluminum sliding glass door. The front features a green roof with native grasses and the rear is covered with a glass roof.

The homeowners sought to create a modest, modern, lakeside cottage, nestled into a narrow lot in Tonka Bay. The site inspired a modified shotgun-style floor plan, with rooms laid out in succession from front to back. Simple and authentic materials provide a soft and inviting palette for this modern home. Wood finishes in both warm and soft grey tones complement a combination of clean white walls, blue glass tiles, steel frames, and concrete surfaces. Sustainable strategies were incorporated to provide healthy living and a net-positive-energy-use home. Onsite geothermal, solar panels, battery storage, insulation systems, and triple-pane windows combine to provide independence from frequent power outages and supply excess power to the electrical grid.

This house west of Boston was originally designed in 1958 by the great New England modernist, Henry Hoover. He built his own modern home in Lincoln in 1937, the year before the German émigré Walter Gropius built his own world famous house only a few miles away. By the time this 1958 house was built, Hoover had matured as an architect; sensitively adapting the house to the land and incorporating the clients wish to recreate the indoor-outdoor vibe of their previous home in Hawaii.
The house is beautifully nestled into its site. The slope of the roof perfectly matches the natural slope of the land. The levels of the house delicately step down the hill avoiding the granite ledge below. The entry stairs also follow the natural grade to an entry hall that is on a mid level between the upper main public rooms and bedrooms below. The living spaces feature a south- facing shed roof that brings the sun deep in to the home. Collaborating closely with the homeowner and general contractor, we freshened up the house by adding radiant heat under the new purple/green natural cleft slate floor. The original interior and exterior Douglas fir walls were stripped and refinished.

Let's design your new or renovation project in healthy, beautiful and comfortable ways. We want you to live happily in your healthy home without the burden of excessive utility costs. Your home should be beautiful as well.

From the comfortable interior of this high-performance home, the living and dining areas overlook neighboring woodlands. The well-insulated walls in this home are about a foot thick--keeping both the winter cold and excessive summer heat at bay.

Even with the excess of energy production on site, energy-use is minimized throughout the residence. Appliances are Energy Star Rated, while the majority of lights are LED. Utilizing the homeowners interest and expertise in smart-home technology, a major goal of the clients was to eliminate all vampire loads in electrical circuits.

These Suniva 260 watt black solar panels are part of a 3 array system that will provide electricity for a Prius EV and a Tesla EV. By taking advantage of SCE EV rate the homeowners can charge their vehicles during the super off peak rate for 9 cents per KwH between the hours of 12:00 am. and 6:00 am. Thru net metering the homeowners will sell the excess energy generated to SCE.

This exquisite San Jose model home with a subtly placed solar panel system on top of the garage roof. This model home enjoys nearly free energy produced by the solar panels while the sun is shining! Thanks to the long hours of sunlight in San Jose, the energy generated is enough to power every aspect of the home for days on end, thanks to a backup battery to store all that excess power. At EnergyPal, we've contributed thousands of projects like this across United States and Canada. We're happy to contribute to a brighter, and cleaner future.

Panasonic whole home energy system solar panels installed as part of this eco conscious addition and renovation project. This system provides reserve energy for up to 3 days in the event of a grid failure, and also feeds into the hydro grid when excess power is generated, offsetting hydro costs from the utility.

This project won in the 2013 Builders Association of Metropolitan Pittsburgh Housing Excellence Award for Best Urban Renewal Renovation Project. The glass bowl was made in the glass studio owned by the owner which is adjacent to the residence. The mirror is a repurposed window. The door is repurposed from a boarding house.
