While no major fixtures or appliances were relocated, nor were there major architectural changes, this space's transformation is a jaw-dropper. We began by removing the existing yellowed oak wood cabinets and replaced them with gorgeous custom cabinets from Tharp Cabinet Company. These cabinets are a very simple shaker style in a bright white paint color. We paired these fresh and bright cabinet with black hardware for a dramatic pop. We utilized the Blackrock pulls from Amerock and adore the playful contrast these pieces provide. On the backsplash, we used a very simple and understated white subway tile for a classic and timeless look that doesn't draw the eye away from the focal island or surrounding features. Over the range, we used a stunning mini-glass mosaic tile from TileBar that shimmers and showcases a variety of colors based on the time of day and light entry. The island is our favorite piece in this kitchen: a custom-built focal point from Tharp, painted in a gorgeous custom blue from Benjamin Moore. The island is topped with a dramatic slab of Arabescato from Pental Surfaces. On the perimeter cabinets, we've utilized the stunning White Fusion quartz, also from Pental. For final touches, we've utilized matte black wall sconces over the windows from Rejuvenation, and have a gorgeous sink faucet from Delta Faucet. Throughout the main level, we refinished the hardwood floors to bring them to a more soft, neutral brown color. New paint is carried throughout the house as well. The modern industrial farmhouse style together in this remodel creates a pleasing and welcoming balance. This project was infused with materials, textures, and color to create a modern industrial feel. The homeowners wanted an open floor plan. One of the most eye-catching elements is the custom-made rustic wood ceiling beams and the white shiplap, which elevates the entirety of opening this new space. The homeowners added industrial elements to the space with mixed metals from the lighting, faucet, pot filler, and stainless-steel appliances to farmhouse elements with an apron front sink and rustic barstools. Another aspect of this gorgeous kitchen is the quartz backsplash behind the range with a modern plaster range hood to ceiling accented by a bold encaustic tile on the other backsplash wall. One of the defined focal points for the whole room is the large light fixtures in the kitchen and living area. This main level remodel project has authentic beauty from floor to ceiling.

Seamless Elegance is a story bringing together both old and new. A cramped kitchen and a seldom-used den in a 100 year-old house were opened up to create a sprawling 300-sqft paradise. Obsessing over the little details was important to achieving our goal of seamless elegance. The archway and molding detail between the dining and living room was perfectly mirrored between the dining room and kitchen, right down to the hidden closets. A faux brick wall painted white was added to the back wall of the kitchen to give the illusion that the previous expansion was always there. The existing 1.5” wide beautiful oak hardwood floor was matched to the rest of the house and continued into the kitchen. The flooring throughout the house was re-done at the same time to solidify the marriage between old and new; the result was a seamless transition into functionality. The character brought into the space by the oak hardwood floor and brick wall off sets the contemporary high gloss white cabinets. No upper cabinets were used in this design because we wanted to showcase the brick accent wall. The storage lost from zero upper kitchen cabinets was more than made up in floor-to-ceiling pantry. This corner pantry accommodates the bulk of storage for food and dishes in the kitchen. The subtraction of the upper cabinets allows the Tom Dixon pendant lights to be boldly featured over the eating peninsula. Visual lines were a key aspect in this design helping the eye move throughout the space. The cabinet break lines are at the same height as the counter tops creating one continuous line. The paneled dishwasher blends perfectly with the rest of the kitchen cabinetry. The white quartz countertop flows down into a waterfall edge at the end of the eating peninsula, being the final grounding piece to visual lines. Although the kitchen is all white, it is offset and given visual interest through texture and the use of different materials. The white allows the beautiful expensive appliances to be showcased along with the newly refinished flooring. The clean crisp kitchen will be the perfect backdrop to show case boldly colored art and accessories.

This Huntington Woods lower level renovation was recently finished in September of 2019. Created for a busy family of four, we designed the perfect getaway complete with custom millwork throughout, a complete gym, spa bathroom, craft room, laundry room, and most importantly, entertaining and living space. From the main floor, a single pane glass door and decorative wall sconce invites us down. The patterned carpet runner and custom metal railing leads to handmade shiplap and millwork to create texture and depth. The reclaimed wood entertainment center allows for the perfect amount of storage and display. Constructed of wire brushed white oak, it becomes the focal point of the living space. It’s easy to come downstairs and relax at the eye catching reclaimed wood countertop and island, with undercounter refrigerator and wine cooler to serve guests. Our gym contains a full length wall of glass, complete with rubber flooring, reclaimed wall paneling, and custom metalwork for shelving. The office/craft room is concealed behind custom sliding barn doors, a perfect spot for our homeowner to write while the kids can use the Dekton countertops for crafts. The spa bathroom has heated floors, a steam shower, full surround lighting and a custom shower frame system to relax in total luxury. Our laundry room is whimsical and fresh, with rustic plank herringbone tile. With this space layout and renovation, the finished basement is designed to be a perfect spot to entertain guests, watch a movie with the kids or even date night!

The living room goes fully black, ceiling included, with painted casings around the entryways that frame it like a portal from the foyer and dining room. Tone-on-tone black runs through the picture frames, coffee tables, piano, shelves, and drapery, warmed by texture rather than colour. The clients lower level was in need of a bright and fresh perspective, with a twist of inspiration from a recent stay in Amsterdam. The previous space was dark, cold, somewhat rustic and featured a fireplace that too up way to much of the space. They wanted a new space where their teenagers could hang out with their friends and where family nights could be filled with colorful expression. The pops of color are purposeful and not overwhelming, allowing your eye to travel around the room and take in all of the visual interest. A colorful rug and wallpaper mural were the jumping off point for colorful accessories. The fireplace tile adds a soft modern, yet artistic twist. This modern townhome in Vaughan received some mid-century modern flair and some really fun wallpaper. The large open concept living room was challenging in terms of creating a successful layout and we addressed it by bringing a large sectional closer to the center of the room rather than anchoring it against walls. Plenty of circulation space for a sideboard with a beautiful vinyl player, a collection of tall architectural prints and an eight foot tall floor lamp bring the eye up a double story living space. Fun wallpaper creates a long feature wall in the living and dining area with a geometric pattern that brings some movement to the room and is also mirrored in the kitchen backsplash and sideboard veneer. We designed a bedroom with the perfect shade of blue that will age nicely with our client’s young son along with a calming study perfect for getting some work done.

Light and airy with pops of color is the mood for this space. As you enter this newly designed family room your eye goes directly to the amazing long teal velvet curtain panels. Warm gray furniture invites you to a cozy seating arrangement. The deep espresso floor is beautifully anchored with the soft white pottery barn rug. I love the book shelf I found that accents all of the striking accessories found while traveling. Global textiles pull this main level refresh together.

At Archadeck of Nova Scotia we love any size project big or small. But, that being said, we have a soft spot for the projects that let us show off our talents! This Halifax house was no exception. The owners wanted a space to suit their outdoor lifestyle with materials to last far into the future. The choices were quite simple: stone veneer, Timbertech composite decking and glass railing. What better way to create that stability than with a solid foundation, concrete columns and decorative stone veneer? The posts were all wrapped with stone and match the retaining wall which was installed to help with soil retention and give the backyard more definition (it’s not too hard on the eyes either). A set of well-lit steps will guide you up the multi-level deck. The built-in planters soften the hardness of the Timbertech composite deck and provide a little visual relief. The two-tone aesthetic of the deck and railing are a stunning feature which plays up contrasting tones. From there it’s a game of musical chairs; we recommend the big round one on a September evening with a glass of wine and cozy blanket. We haven’t gotten there quite yet, but this property has an amazing view (you will see soon enough!). As to not spoil the view, we installed TImbertech composite railing with glass panels. This allows you to take in the surrounding sights while relaxing and not have those pesky balusters in the way. In any Canadian backyard, there is always the dilemma of dealing with mosquitoes and black flies! Our solution to this itchy problem is to incorporate a screen room as part of your design. This screen room in particular has space for dining and lounging around a fireplace, perfect for the colder evenings! Ahhh…there’s the view! From the top level of the deck you can really get an appreciation for Nova Scotia. Life looks pretty good from the top of a multi-level deck. Once again, we installed a composite and glass railing on the new composite deck to capture the scenery. What puts the cherry on top of this project is the balcony! One of the greatest benefits of composite decking and railing is that it can be curved to create beautiful soft edges. Imagine sipping your morning coffee and watching the sunrise over the water. It all started with the dishwasher springing a leak while the clients were on vacation. Their home was built around 2002 and it needed to be updated. With the significant water damage it was the time to call in Arlene Ladegaard of Design Connection, Inc to help create a design plan and selections for the contractor, as well new furnishings to replace the old tired pieces that dated back many years. The lower level was a bigger challenge for the entire place had been flooded from above. Our clients requested a more modern look to the furnishings and to be well budgeted. The TV was to be the big focus in this man cave. The bar area was a real eye sore with its large refrigerator and freezer from the over flow from the upstairs kitchen. With much creativity, the bar height countertop was lowered to counter height. The back wall was sheet rocked to allow for the massive appliances to look built in. The space needed texture, and grass cloth wall coverings was the perfect solutions.
