An old stone mansion built in 1924 had seen a number of renovations over the decades and the time had finally come to address a growing list of issues. Rather than continue with a patchwork of fixes, the owners engaged us to conduct a full house renovation to bring this home back to its former glory and in line with its status as an international consulate residence where dignitaries are hosted on a regular basis. One of the biggest projects was remodeling the expansive 365 SF kitchen; the main kitchen needed to be both a workhorse for the weekly catered events as well as serve as the residents’ primary hub. We made adjustments to the kitchen layout to maximize countertop and storage space as well as enhance overall functionality, being mindful of the dual purposes this kitchen serves. To add visual interest to the large space we used two toned cabinets – classic white along the perimeter and a deep blue to distinguish the two islands and tall pantry. Brushed brass accents echo the original brass hardware and fixtures throughout the home. A kitchen this large needed a statement when it came to the countertops so we selected a stunning Nuvolato quartzite with distinctive veining that complements the blue cabinets. We restored and refinished the original Heart of Pine floors, letting the natural character of the wood shine through. A custom antique Heart of Pine wood top was commissioned for the fixed island – the warmth of wood was preferable to stone for the informal seating area. The second island serves as both prep area and staging space for dinners and events. This mobile island can be pushed flush with the stationary island to provide a generous area for the caterers to expedite service. Adjacent to the main kitchen, we added a second service kitchen for the live-in staff and their family. This room used to be a catch-all laundry/storage/mudroom so we had to get creative in order to incorporate all of those features while adding a fully functioning eat-in kitchen. Using smaller appliances allowed us to capture more space for cabinetry and by stacking the cabinets and washer/dryer (relocated to the rear service foyer) we managed to meet all the requirements. We installed salvaged Heart of Pine floors to match the originals in the adjacent kitchen and chose a neutral finish palette that will be easy to maintain. These kitchens weren’t the only projects we undertook in the historic stone mansion. Other renovations include 7 bathrooms, flooring throughout (hardwoods, custom carpets/runners/wall-to-wall), custom drapery and window treatments, new lighting/electric, as well as paint/trim and custom closet and cabinetry.

Inspiration for a coastal kitchen remodel in San Francisco

Custom built-in entertainment center in the same house as the custom built-in window seat project that was posted in 2019. This project is 11-1/2 feet wide x 18 inches deep x 8 feet high. It consists of two 36" wide end base cabinets and a 66" wide center base cabinet with an open component compartment. The base cabinets have soft-close door hinges with 3-way cam adjustments and adjustable shelves. The base cabinet near the doorway includes custom-made ducting to re-route the HVAC air flow from a floor vent out through the toe kick panel. Above the base countertop are side and overhead book/display cases trimmed with crown molding. The TV is mounted on a wall bracket that extends and tilts, and in-wall electrical and HDMI cables connect the TV to power and components via a wall box at the back of the component compartment.

Woodside, CA spa-sauna project is one of our favorites. When Bill and Jackie Fox decided it was time for a 3 Season room, they worked with Todd Jurs at Advance Design Studio to make their back yard dream come true. Situated on an acre lot in Gilberts, the Fox’s wanted to enjoy their yard year round, get away from the mosquitoes, and enhance their home’s living space with an indoor/outdoor space the whole family could enjoy. “Todd and his team at Advance Design Studio did an outstanding job meeting my needs. Todd did an excellent job helping us determine what we needed and how to design the space”, says Bill. The 15’ x 18’ 3 Season’s Room was designed with an open end gable roof, exposing structural open beam cedar rafters and a beautiful tongue and groove Knotty Pine ceiling. The floor is a tongue and groove Douglas Fir, and amenities include a ceiling fan, a wall mounted TV and an outdoor pergola. Adjustable plexi-glass windows can be opened and closed for ease of keeping the space clean, and use in the cooler months. “With this year’s mild seasons, we have actually used our 3 season’s room year round and have really enjoyed it”, reports Bill. “They built us a beautiful 3-season room. Everyone involved was great. Our main builder DJ, was quite a craftsman. Josh our Project Manager was excellent. The final look of the project was outstanding. Buckeye Basements, Inc. with Team Member Columbus Custom Cabinets Delaware, Ohio The clients set out to transform 1,650 square feet of unfinished basement into a stunning space for guests and family to enjoy. The final design features a media/sitting area, vintage-inspired wet bar, wine cellar, gym with adjustable ballet barres for mother and daughter, children’s play area, guest bedroom, and a luxurious, spa-like bathroom. A 3D printer was used to fabricate a unique lighting feature, while materials such as brick, custom woodwork, and picture frame molding showcased superior craftsmanship. They are a busy 2-career household with young children and enjoy entertaining friends and family in their home. They have a beautiful open concept home but unfortunately the kitchen was not fitting for the rest of the home. They were not quite sure what to do with the space. We talked about trying to refresh it or do more of a minor remodel, but in the end they decided a full gut would get them to where they wanted to be. One problem was there was no place for guests to hang out other than the large and awkward banquette area. The brick wall and tiled hood area were feeling a bit dated and tired. The space was just not functional for their lifestyle. There was no prep space near the cooktop and no landing area for items coming out of the ovens or refrigerator, plus a big dead zone in the center of the room. Banquettes, like the one they previously had in the space, are great for small spaces, but when they get really large like this one, it makes getting in and out of the seating area awkward and uncomfortable. Plus, there was room for a large table, so we eliminated the awkward built in. We started by removing the faux brick wall between the kitchen and back entry. We relocated the entry to the garage over a couple feet in order to get every last inch out of the new kitchen. We also made the decision to close up the primary window that faced the pretty ho hum brick wall of the neighbor’s house. There was plenty of light coming in from the seating area, so we just didn’t feel the window was adding much to the room. Construction went smoothy. There was a bit of rework with electrical, flooring and HVAC, but in the end, we think it was well worth it. The clients really wanted a sleek contemporary look, and we originally had planned for a full height slab backsplash, but due to it’s size, it was a budget buster. Instead, we got creative and settled on large format porcelain tiles that have a similar feel but were a fraction of the cost. We made sure the wall was plumb and level so that the fit and finish would mimic that of slab material. The final space was quite a change. A large prep sink sits directly across from the new pro-style range with plenty additional prep space on the large island. The refrigerator and ovens now have miles of landing space, and a nice tight work triangle makes cooking a breeze. Since we wanted a more contemporary feel, not many wall cabinets were included. Instead, we outfitted some of the drawers for dish storage with a peg system. Two large pantries flanking the refrigerator hold baking supplies and small appliances. Large drawers by the cooktop hold pots and pans, and an appliance garage tucked away to the left of the range hides away miscellaneous items. The large island also houses a microwave drawer and tons of storage, most of which is drawers offering maximum convenience. The island now seats 5-6 people comfortably along with the new table in the seating area which can seat up to 8. Entertaining will be a breeze in this space. With such a clean backdrop, we knew we would need some drama with the lighting, so we chose two sets of staggered pendants, which we adjusted for the right visual balance above the island. We also included a small coffee station to the right of the main kitchen, which helps keep the coffee clutter out of the kitchen proper. Two tones of complimentary gray are featured in this kitchen. The perimeter is a light gray that reads almost white. The island is a gray stain that adds some depth and interest with the visible wood texture. The countertops are clean white quartz, and the hardware, barstools and light fixtures add warm brass tones. I see lots of cooking and entertaining with family and friends in the near future in this bright and airy new space. Inspiration for a contemporary walk-in closet remodel in Cincinnati with open cabinets and white cabinets

The shower has a curbless entry and a floating seat. A large niche makes it easy to reach items while either sitting or standing. There are 3 shower options; a rain shower from the ceiling, a hand held by the seat, another head that adjust on a bar. Barn style glass door and a towel warmer close at hand. Luxurious, sophisticated and eclectic as many of the spaces the homeowners lived in abroad. There is a large luxe curbless shower, a private water closet, fireplace and TV. They also have a walk-in closet with abundant storage full of special spaces. After you shower you can dry off with toasty warm towels from the towel. warmer.
