This petite kitchen was previously closed off from the dining and living room. The compact size of the kitchen made it difficult for the client to host their large family gatherings. With the new design, the spaces were joined by removing the wall between the kitchen and dining room. The space of the kitchen was optimized by recessing items into adjacent walls. The refrigerator was recessed into the wall of the adjacent garage. The ovens, pantry, and appliance garage were recessed into the wall, borrowing a few square feet from the bedroom closet and living room. The finishes throughout the kitchen celebrate the clients love of travel and collection of keepsakes from around the world. The mosaic printed tiles on the backsplash and refrigerator wrap bring an eclectic mix of encaustic tile designs from around the world. The Alderson Residence was designed to capture incredible views of Birch Bay and Olympic Mountains. As a result all living space was located on the second floor and sleeping and service space was located on the main level. The building had to fit a narrow and steep building site located within a critical area along California Creek. The timber framed porch transitions to an interior timber framed open staircase with an open boardwalk that connects the main and upper level. The purpose of creating a boardwalk within the home was to enhance the feeling that you are at the beach. The site specific design and use of interior and exterior finishes seek to pull colors and materials that reflect the character of the Northwest.

This beautiful Birmingham, MI home had been renovated prior to our clients purchase, but the style and overall design was not a fit for their family. They really wanted to have a kitchen with a large “eat-in” island where their three growing children could gather, eat meals and enjoy time together. Additionally, they needed storage, lots of storage! We decided to create a completely new space. The original kitchen was a small “L” shaped workspace with the nook visible from the front entry. It was completely closed off to the large vaulted family room. Our team at MSDB re-designed and gutted the entire space. We removed the wall between the kitchen and family room and eliminated existing closet spaces and then added a small cantilevered addition toward the backyard. With the expanded open space, we were able to flip the kitchen into the old nook area and add an extra-large island. The new kitchen includes oversized built in Subzero refrigeration, a 48” Wolf dual fuel double oven range along with a large apron front sink overlooking the patio and a 2nd prep sink in the island. Additionally, we used hallway and closet storage to create a gorgeous walk-in pantry with beautiful frosted glass barn doors. As you slide the doors open the lights go on and you enter a completely new space with butcher block countertops for baking preparation and a coffee bar, subway tile backsplash and room for any kind of storage needed. The homeowners love the ability to display some of the wine they’ve purchased during their travels to Italy! We did not stop with the kitchen; a small bar was added in the new nook area with additional refrigeration. A brand-new mud room was created between the nook and garage with 12” x 24”, easy to clean, porcelain gray tile floor. The finishing touches were the new custom living room fireplace with marble mosaic tile surround and marble hearth and stunning extra wide plank hand scraped oak flooring throughout the entire first floor.

This exceptional family home on the Upper North Shore has been designed for all year round entertaining. The home flows easily from the front entrance through the open plan living rooms through to the kitchen and outdoor living areas. The kitchen has been cleverly divided to provide additional storage and allows room for a sizable, walk-in butler’s pantry. Fitted with an additional sink means food can be prepared and dishes stored out of sight when entertaining. Gitani Stone, Ancient Reef island bench, Sareen Stone mosaic splashback and pewter handles transform what is predominantly a white kitchen into a vibrant living and working space. The kitchen is beautifully lit with a combination of ambient, task, and general lighting: natural light streams through the large windows and french doors, LED ceiling lights enhance the natural lighting and under cabinet lighting provides task lighting. Art of Kitchens completed the interior kitchen, outdoor kitchen, bathrooms and custom bedroom joinery in this brand new Upper North Shore Meadowbank Home.

Thankfully this Northeast home had room for its kitchen to grow. The 9 foot by 8 foot kitchen had an adjacent, 6 foot by 11 foot office space which could be given up so the kitchen could expand into it. With this all the plumbing fixtures and appliances got rearranged, larger windows were installed and a glass exterior door was added along with a little deck. The new kitchen is almost double in size, comfortably accommodating cooks, guests and a cat. Plus an adjacent, secondary stairway was taken out so a half bathroom could go in its place. Along with a new pantry, well-made Crystal Cabinets span the kitchen to offer more storage than some know what to do with. Durable new Silestone quartz and butcher block countertops make for great working surfaces. Thoughtful plays on colors bring a sense of balance, calm, and light. Intentional selections made to make the kitchen fit with the home include; new hard wood flooring same size and species as existing, dark hardware, shaker style cabinetry and subway tile. To mix in a pop of local, colorful flare locally made Clay Squared tile is showcased above the range. Overall the remodeled kitchen allows for a whole new way of life that is being much enjoyed!
