Our clients were relocating from the upper peninsula to the lower peninsula and wanted to design a retirement home on their Lake Michigan property. The topography of their lot allowed for a walk out basement which is practically unheard of with how close they are to the water. Their view is fantastic, and the goal was of course to take advantage of the view from all three levels. The positioning of the windows on the main and upper levels is such that you feel as if you are on a boat, water as far as the eye can see. They were striving for a Hamptons / Coastal, casual, architectural style. The finished product is just over 6,200 square feet and includes 2 master suites, 2 guest bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, sunroom, home bar, home gym, dedicated seasonal gear / equipment storage, table tennis game room, sauna, and bonus room above the attached garage. All the exterior finishes are low maintenance, vinyl, and composite materials to withstand the blowing sands from the Lake Michigan shoreline.

Guest House Kitchen – Functional Design with Flawless Execution
This kitchen is part of the guest house, which also serves as a game room and integrated living space. We installed the entire floor and backsplash with the same precision and care applied throughout the main home. The open layout connects the kitchen seamlessly to the living and sleeping areas, so every line and transition had to be clean and perfectly aligned. The result is a stylish, practical space that offers both comfort and elegance — ready to welcome guests with the same high-end finish found throughout the estate.

No More Noisy Doors! The Original Mom-Invented Cushy Closer; since 2007.
As two moms, with nine children between us, we've figured out a few things along the way; one of them being: We don't care how much noise a child can sleep through, there's something about the click of a doorknob or the rattling of a door that can break through even the deepest sleep.
The Cushy Closer Door Cushion:
-Allows quiet entry and exit while checking on sleeping children (without turning the knob/handle)
-Helps prevent children/adults from being accidentally locked in or out (bathrooms, bedrooms, house, etc.)
-Snug fit helps muffle door sounds (slamming, rattling, closing) while allowing the door to close completely and quietly
-Makes a unique yet practical baby shower gift
Our Cushy Closer Door Cushions are handmade with quality materials, inside and out, and are designed to be long-lasting and hold their shape for a truly quiet door!

This bespoke fitted home study and office is an exquisite multifunctional space with a dedicated workspace, media unit and library. The cabinets were custom-made and installed by us to create a superbly practical and stylish room for working, studying, gaming and watching films or TV. Our art and book-loving client commissioned Bespoke by Acorn to bring their design vision to life and the result is a stunning interior featuring built-in bookcases, a bespoke dual desk and decorative wall panels. The vertical slatted oak wood panelling provides visual interest and texture while also helping to absorb unwanted noise.
DARK BLUE PAINTED BOOKCASE UNIT
The bookcase cabinetry has a spraypainted finish in Farrow & Ball’s Hague Blue, a premium quality, eco-friendly paint. This deep blue colour is often used in study or library spaces as it is associated with focus, calm and seriousness. Dark blue is a sophisticated shade for bookcases, creating a strong contrast with the book spines. Integrated LED lighting within the joinery prevents the space from being too dark and adds dimension and richness to the display. Illuminating shelving also makes it easier to find what you’re looking for.
MADE TO MEASURE DESK IN OAK FOR TWO
The large made to measure desk in oak for two features wide smooth-closing drawers and plenty of cupboard and shelving space. It’s perfectly designed for comfortable side by side working and videogaming. Cabling is neatly concealed behind a back panel under the desk. A simple push to open mechanism provides easy access. While technology is essential for productivity, cables, equipment and sockets can look untidy and impose on a design scheme. With bespoke furniture, as shown here, technology can be elegantly concealed with easy access.

Step into this Elegant Torrance Kitchen Remodel, where timeless design meets modern functionality. The centerpiece of this kitchen is a stunning dual-tone island, featuring rich wood contrasted against the sleek white cabinetry. It's not just for show; the expansive countertop space makes it perfect for meal prep and casual dining. We went with a classic subway tile backsplash in a herringbone pattern, adding just the right amount of texture to the clean, neutral palette. Stainless steel appliances and a custom range hood bring a professional-grade touch, while glass-front upper cabinets provide a stylish display for glassware and dishware.
Lighting was a game-changer here. We installed a trio of pendant lights over the island, casting beautiful patterns that enhance the overall ambiance. The open layout ensures an easy flow between cooking, dining, and entertaining. For this Torrance home, the goal was simple: combine elegance with everyday practicality, and we think it hit the mark beautifully.

We’re excited to reveal the final segment of our award-winning basement remodel. From the tranquil vibes of the spa-like bathroom to the refined elegance of the wine room, we’ve now arrived at the heart of the relaxation and fun – the rec space. This multi-functional area is perfect for watching a family movie together or hosting friends to watch the game on the big screen. The pinball area sparks nostalgia and adds a retro flair– perfectly in tune with the MCM vibe. The stunning wood slat design from the curved wall outside the bathroom continues along the hallway down to the wine room which connects all three major spaces. This remodel balances aesthetics with functionality, making it an inviting and practical space that fits the owners' lifestyle. The clean lines, natural textures, and thoughtful design choices make this entertainment hub the ultimate space for family downtime, enhancing market appeal, and blending timeless style with modern convenience.

This growing family wanted a welcoming retreat for visiting grandparents, so Better Builders transformed their basement into a bright, functional living space. The remodel added a private bedroom, full bathroom, and laundry closet, while the walkout design provided guests with convenient, separate access.
Thoughtful details like a built-in desk under the stairs, custom shelving for games and books, and an updated fireplace make the space both practical and inviting. With careful attention to natural light, the basement feels open and airy—perfect for family living and hosting guests.

This sleek modern space was designed with a young professional in mind. Its open feel would fit perfectly in a loft space or a downtown condo. The kitchen’s door style is what really sets the tone as its beauty lies in its simplicity, with straight lines and right angles. And while the cabinetry is clean and understated, the mix of the painted white and the deep brown finishes give the kitchen character.
Perfect for a cocktail party, the Island serves as gathering space to enjoy appetizers. The peninsula is situated next to wine shelves and would work great as a drink station. Practical as well as fun, the butt door cabinets just above the sink to the left allow for an open space when both cabinet doors are open as there’s no center rail on the cabinet frame. This option offers homeowners the added convenience of easily storing wide awkward items such as serving platters and board games.
Getting ready for the party is easier too, with several smart storage features. For example, a pegged deep drawer organizer provides ample width and depth as well as a special peg board bottom which allows homeowners to keep pots and pans organized. With a drawer organizer next to the stove you won’t have to fumble around to find the utensil you need. And a swing out Lazy Susan makes retrieving items from the awkward corner area a breeze.

The division of the two main spaces in this basement from TV area to games room was done by designing custom wood shelving that fit into the openings of the wall between structural posts. Instead of letting the challenges of this basement close up the space we came up with a creative and practical solution that allowed us to achieve an overall expansive feel throughout.

Our clients were relocating from the upper peninsula to the lower peninsula and wanted to design a retirement home on their Lake Michigan property. Sophisticated Basement Built-In with Warm Wood Tones and Modern Accents
This beautifully designed built-in brings both form and function to a finished basement, offering elegant storage paired with a clean, curated aesthetic. Crafted in rich espresso-stained wood cabinetry, the unit features sleek brass hardware for a contemporary yet timeless look.
Symmetrical tall cabinets anchor each side, perfect for tucking away games, movies, or entertaining essentials, while a center console with deep drawers offers additional storage. The quartz countertop creates an ideal space for displaying artful décor, greenery, and collected treasures, effortlessly softening the overall design.
Recessed lighting highlights the beautiful textures and neutral tones, while a layered mix of ceramic and wood decorative objects adds dimension and interest. Whether used as a basement bar, media storage, or entertaining hub, this built-in proves that practicality can be stunningly stylish.

This project was featured in Midwest Home magazine as the winner of ASID Life in Color. The addition of a kitchen with custom shaker-style cabinetry and a large shiplap island is perfect for entertaining and hosting events for family and friends. Quartz counters that mimic the look of marble were chosen for their durability and ease of maintenance. Open shelving with brass sconces above the sink create a focal point for the large open space.
Putting a modern spin on the traditional nautical/coastal theme was a goal. We took the quintessential palette of navy and white and added pops of green, stylish patterns, and unexpected artwork to create a fresh bright space. Grasscloth on the back of the built in bookshelves and console table along with rattan and the bentwood side table add warm texture. Finishes and furnishings were selected with a practicality to fit their lifestyle and the connection to the outdoors. A large sectional along with the custom cocktail table in the living room area provide ample room for game night or a quiet evening watching movies with the kids.
