The North Providence Senior Center wanted to install a wellness garden adjacent to their existing patio. The y requested a 'Zen' style as the garden would be located near where outdoor yoga classes take place.
D'Urso Landscaping designed and installed the garden, which included a water fountain, bench seating, custom metal screen panels as a backdrop, shade plantings and a slab paver patio/ walk. The garden design provides calming textures, colors and sounds.

In the heart of Philadelphia, a single family townhouse sports three luxury rooftop gardens, each with it's own take on outdoor living.
2nd story: Off of the main living room and kitchen, is an outdoor living room with a shade canopy supported by a pergola, which creates the "room" feel. Potted evergreen trees screen the tall wall of the adjacent building, adding softness to the space. An Ivy panel screens the neighboring views of adjacent decks.
4th Story: To create an inviting and comfortable space on this small porch, ceder boxes were built to hold plant material and second as seating. The soft tub spa is easy to access from all sides with the wrap around deck. Cedar is such a warm colored wood, and provides a more natural look on top of the original concrete deck.
5th Story: The largest of the three rooftops is on the very top floor, full of lush plantings and a variety of seating. Here you find an outdoor kitchen, a louvered privacy screen, corten-steel planters, and a greenhouse built of cedar. The plantings are lush, providing seasonal interest as well as separation between neighboring deck.

This project reimagines an under-used back yard in Portland, Oregon, creating an urban garden with an adjacent writer’s studio. Taking inspiration from Japanese precedents, we conceived of a paving scheme with planters, a cedar soaking tub, a fire pit, and a seven-foot-tall cedar fence. The fence is sheathed on both sides to afford greater privacy as well as ensure the neighbors enjoy a well-made fence too.

I started by creating a cozy conversation area by placing the furniture at an angle to give the space the feel of a comfortable outdoor living room.
With the floral trend being all the rage this season, I couldn’t resist adding bright floral outdoor cushions to jazz up the space. They brighten up the black wicker furniture and tie in nicely with flowers from the front garden and the yellow siding of the house, making the space cheerful and inviting.
Since the clematis we planted last year hasn't grown in yet, I bought a Black-eyed Susan vine for extra privacy. It’s in a pot for now, but I plan to drape it over the privacy screen .

Main fireplace lounge leading into private lounge with lattice screening. Areas are separated with spaced steppers. A custom water feature was centered on the main lounge and private lounge as the main focal feature. A curved natural stacked stone retaining wall helps to tie the two areas together along with flattening out the water feature garden.

When the neighbor expanded, the small, open courtyard became an extension of the neighbor's driveway. Southern Landscape designed and built a custom privacy trellis to shield the neighbor while creating an intimate retreat off the master bedroom. ,Asian jasmine climbs the trellis, while dianella, foxtail, and little gem magnolia highlight the custom water feature, all of which contributes to the quiet oasis.

Forest Hills Residence by Jay Graham, FASLA of Graham Landscape Architecture with architect Christopher Morrison, FAIA, LEED-AP
This recently renovated urban landscape and garden located in the Northwest quarter of Washington, DC, sprang from a near-complete reconstruction of the property’s main house. Adjacent to Rock Creek Park, a large urban park and natural area, the landscape and gardens reflect both the woodland character of the nearby park and the modern architectural design of the home. Mirroring a distinct, internal angular wall separating the public and private spaces of the residence, a complimentary wall in the outdoor garden creates a dialogue between the interior of the home and the outdoor living space. Throughout the renovation process, the architect and landscape architect worked cooperatively to create a memorable outdoor space. Moving the original garage entrance allowed for an extension of the entry garden, where an extended walkway and ornamental screen along the street front provide enhanced privacy for the residence and create a garden backdrop visible from inside the home. Plantings in the rear of the home occupy the site’s natural slope as the property descends steeply into Creek Valley, a spur of Rock Creek Park, and provide residents with a rare scenic view of dense woodlands and a space for quiet contemplation in the midst of the bustling metro region. This shady rooftop terrace was designed with a beautiful grey composite deck, wood fencing, a pergola, and an outdoor Shoji screen. Composite decking has come a long way and can have a very high-quality looking finish like this one. The benefit to using composite wood is that it is rated for fire safety. This rooftop garden is located near NYU in Manhattan. Read more about this garden on my blog, www.amberfreda.com.

This spacious, covered patio is the perfect retreat for enjoying the outdoors with all the comforts of an indoor setting. The neutral color palette of the sandstone paver patio, and natural wood tones of the tongue & groove ceilings and privacy screen are in keeping with the modern aesthetic our homeowners desired. Whether you are dining alfresco in the outdoor dining room or gathering around the beautiful modern limestone fireplace with mounted TV to watch your favorite team, this versatile space is a harmonious blend of natural beauty, functionality, and modern design.

This compact, urban backyard was in desperate need of privacy. We created a series of outdoor rooms, privacy screens, and lush plantings all with an Asian-inspired design sense. Elements include a covered outdoor lounge room, sun decks, rock gardens, shade garden, evergreen plant screens, and raised boardwalk to connect the various outdoor spaces. The finished space feels like a true backyard oasis.
