A modern mid-century house in the Los Feliz neighborhood of the Hollywood Hills, this was an extensive renovation. The house was brought down to its studs, new foundations poured, and many walls and rooms relocated and resized. The aim was to improve the flow through the house, to make if feel more open and light, and connected to the outside, both literally through a new stair leading to exterior sliding doors, and through new windows along the back that open up to canyon views. photos by Undine Prohl

These 8' tall arched top walnut entry doors have a traditional and unique pyramid shaped raised panels. The lock rail molding is also one thick piece of walnut completing the old world feel of the doors.

The all-steel stair floats in front of a 3-story glass wall. The stair railings have custom-designed perforations, cut with an industrial water-jet. The top railing is sapele.

This renovation project updates an existing New York 1920s apartment with a modern sensibility.
The sleeping quarters maintain their existing cellular layout to provide ample privacy from the main living space. New built-in window cabinet conceal heating/cooling devices, and provide additional storage. Light-tone neutral colors, dark stained oak floors, and satin nickel hardware provide a clean and classic look.
