The Portola Valley Residence and Pavilion is a composition of staggered and interlocking rectangular spaces that cling to the slope as it gradually wraps around the hillside. As the interior floor level slowly steps down, echoing the natural grade, it increases the floor-to-ceiling height, flooding the space with expanded views and abundant natural light. Carefully defined interior spaces with plaster and stone veneer walls offer a fitting backdrop for the owner's dramatic art collection. The home’s terraced roof design and careful selection of natural materials equally complement its human and natural environments.
In a stylistic departure from the main house, the 750 sf guest pavilion combines three small geometric elements to form a pleasant guest, entertainment space . . . and yard sculpture.

Loxone Smart Home
There’s no rude awakening in the Bluegrass Smart Home. Instead of the usual annoying blare of the alarm clock, the house gradually wakes up by turning on lights and soothing music in the bedroom, and shutting off the night alarm. The moment you walk into the bathroom, the presence detector triggers the heating circuit pump, so you don’t even have to wait for your shower to warm up!
Our modern day lives can be demanding and stressful. So at the end of a busy day, you just want to flop into bed without worrying about whether or not you remembered to lock the back door.
In the Bluegrass Smart Home, a push button next to the bed activates the ‘goodnight function’ and turns off all the lights and appliances on standby within the house. It also sets the night alarm so that only the door/window contacts are actively used for the alarm...which means no more false alarms triggered by the midnight munchies! In addition, the presence detectors throughout the house will turn on lights at a reduced level should you get up during the night.

Terrazzo is a quite a bit different from the natural stone floors we most commonly work with. It’s a type of flooring material that was made popular by Venetian builders in Italy in the 1920s, but is ultimately descended from styles of design that date back hundreds of years. A typical Terrazzo floor consists of chips of marble or granite set in concrete and polished to result in a smooth surface.
This Terrazzo floor, installed in the hallway of a property in Bridgend, South Wales, was in relatively good physical condition, but it had clearly lost its shine due to the build-up of dirt and muck over the years. In fact, it was first installed in around 1940! The owner was keen to have it rejuvenated to its best possible condition, so they asked me to come in to see what I could do.
My first course of action was to apply Tile Doctor Pro Clean liberally across the floor and leave it to dwell for a short period. This is a high alkaline cleaner that is designed to deal with light to moderate soil build-up, and to strip away any old sealer remaining on the floor. I scrubbed the product in using a black pad fitted to a rotary machine and vacuumed up the resulting cleaning with a wet-vac machine.
Next, to restore the shine to the floor, I undertook a process known as burnishing, which involves the application of diamond encrusted polishing pads. We will typically start with a Coarse grit pad to level off any uneven areas of the floor and grind down any particularly stubborn marks and stains. Then, we gradually refine the polish on the floor using Medium and Fine grit pads. A small amount of water is used as lubrication with each pad.
After I had finished applying the first three pads in our four-pad system, I gave the floor a thorough rinse and left it to dry overnight.
I returned to the property the next day and immediately ran some damp tests to check for excess moisture issues, which one might expect with an old floor like this one. Thankfully, the floor proved dry – and I could finish the burnishing process with the fourth and final Very Fine diamond encrusted burnishing pad, which achieved a beautiful shine finish.
Finally, I sealed the floor with three coats of Tile Doctor Colour Grow, an impregnating sealer which provides robust protection and enhances the coloured patterns in the Terrazzo.
As you can see from the photos above, the floor is looking so much more colourful and bright after a deep clean, polish and a fresh seal. The customer was over the moon!

This set of curving front stairs was designed to allow for a gradual rise to the front door. The homeowners wanted a classic design using natural stone materials to fit the with the style of their home. Short risers were used and a railing was installed to help make the sidewalk usable as the homeowner's age and have increased limitations. The natural stone planters were built using Fond du lac limestone. The planters are filled with shrubs, perennials, and annuals.

The plan for this ezpansive home usede the corner location of an irregularly shaped plot to create a beautifully curved carriage poach, with a roof made of two-centimeter thick, five meter-wide sections of tempered glass. The entrance follows a gradual process from public to private spaces, from a salon for meeting guests, through a buffer zone to two living rooms that create a sence of intimacy for family and friends. The calm space of the second living room is an excellent place to gather around the central fireplace. Up several stairs is the first living room, a more lively atmosphere with the outdoor pool as a backdrop.
The pool area has all the facilities−benches and parasols−of a tropical resort. While many luxury homes are closed off to the outside, this shows how an open approach can be dynamic and powerful. TOTAL FLOOR AREA:245.11㎡

Mercury Mosaics and Tile
While the tile looks fairly simple from a distance, a closer look reveals a complex and elegant pattern. A continuous mosaic wraps around the bathroom walls, gradually changing shapes, hues and finish. This collectively utilized seven different types of tile: The colors transform from gray to white in an ombre-like tile effect, encompassing a total of four different tile tones, and move from large, hexagon-shaped tile to medium diamonds.

Our team was tasked to produce a truly unique proposal which worked with an extreme slope over this .5 acre site. We unlocked the value of the land by making the development feasible – as unusual challenge considering the preparatory works involved and required. Our solution presents 3-storey, 4-storey and 5-storey townhouses to the rear, though these appear as normal 1-storey and 2-storey properties from the front elevation. The properties gradually step down with the access road slope.
Many ingenious solutions were sought and successfully found, through axis development, louvre systems for privacy and amenity, materiality in relation to context and structurally in relation to the challenging site.
Materiality was derived from the historic use of the site – a chalk quarry – thus flint and stone are predominant and drive the vision forward, ensuring that the proposal fits into its surroundings, yet is able to provide high quality contemporary living standards.
Our proposal provides 6 new-build dwellings in a location with measurable recorded housing demand, inside the settlement boundary, on a challenging brownfield site.

Yellow- LED illuminated glass kitchen splashback by CreoGlass Design.
LED Lights are available in various styles and colours and layouts. Most popular are horizontal “multi coloured” and “warm white” light. There are further options like dimmable, water-proof , splash-proof, continues e.t.c. but you should speak to our designers or your builder to discuss the best option for your kitchen. With multi coloured or also called colour-changing or mood light LEDs’ you have the option to let the colour spectrum gradually change and lead to one another or you can simple keep only one colour on, what ever the mood you’re in. There are few other ways how to apply LED stripe to the splashbacks. The current LEDs have a general life expectancy of 50,000 hours. If you use your lights for 10 hours a day, this should be 13.7 years. If this is correct, then LED’s are definitely an investment, even the top of the range bulb would work out to cost £2.55GBP per year. Add that to the saving you would make on energy and you’ve got a very cost effective bulb!
