Finding the Perfect Match
Caribbean Blue Pools did a great job on this Franklin Lakes home, affectionately known as grandma’s house. Matching the existing stone on the house was challenging because the stone was no longer being quarried. This meant beginning the search for a similar stone that was still available.
Ultimately using the experts at Braen Supply, a natural blend was selected to match the existing stone for the pool house as well as the focal point of the backyard, the fireplace.
Perfecting the Details
The details on this custom built fireplace, which include custom bluestone surrounds, bluestone chimney caps, and bluestone wall caps, were hand chiseled to enhance the look of the fireplace surrounds.
Moss rock boulders and Kearney stone steps were chosen to help add natural beauty to the project. Norwegian Buff was an easy choice for the patio due to its favorable temperature and beauty around pool areas.

Just as the kitchen is undoubtedly the center of this home, the island is the center of this kitchen. An overhang on the island creates an inviting place to pull up a chair and visit with the other people in the kitchen. This large space can also be incredibly functional. It's large enough for you to be able to comfortably tackle ambitious baking projects and elaborate meals. It's also large enough to serve as a buffet when serving family and friends a casual brunch, lunch or dinner.
To set the island apart from the Cognac finished cabinetry of the rest of the kitchen, we chose Vintage Willow. It gives the room a slightly surprising twist that feels at once retro and new.
A hutch area gives you room to proudly display Grandma's china pattern or your wedding stemware. It also lets you keep wine close at hand while entertaining.
The cooking zone is surrounded by even more counter space and smart storage solutions.

The expansion of new space off the kitchen/dining area also gives grandma and grandpa eyes on the kids at all times.
NOTICE: oak flooring was hand weaved into the existing floor for a seamless, ageless appearance. Can you tell where the old and new flooring begins and ends?

Grandma and Grandpa wanted their first granddaughter to have a toy box that would grow with her. We designed a solid maple toy box, lined it with cedar, and hand-painted her name a floral accent on the lid. The lid has tortion hinges that stop at different heights so it doesn't fall down and squish little fingers. The box features dovetail construction and the lid features breadboard ends, ensuring this piece will last for decades to come.

Hammer & Hand collaborated with Celeste Lewis Architecture on the remodel of this gem of Mid-Century Modern architecture. Originally built for the owner of the View-Master toy factory, the house had been cut up by a series of remodels in the mid-1990s. Our remodel focused on restoring the home’s mid-century elegance, improving circulation and views, and adding space for guests and home office. Photography by Sally Painter Photography.

The composition is unified with the hand split cedar shakes on the old and new volumes blending with the grey of the galvanized roof.
The new cedar ramp is ADA compliant at a 1:12 slope, but is celebrated and destigmatized as the main entry to the apartment.
The low cedar wall provides a base element which ties old and new structures together and conceals the upward slope of the ramp to reach the main living level of both structures.
