Once a sad little patch of grass and an underutilized flower bed dominated this small backyard. Now the homeowners have a very usable courtyard without the hassle of mowing turf. Color was introduced to complement the sage green exterior through containers, furnishings, and stone.

Here is the front of the home. You can see the garage door, as well as the entrance door. Then we also have the patch of artificial grass over on the side and in between the concrete to create a beautiful pattern.

The enclosed organic vegetable garden has its own watering system, mesh fencing that extends underground to keep critters out and raised beds for all vegetables. The wood is cedar, and a convenient garden shed is attached.

In Seattle's Fremont neighborhood SCJ Studio designed a new landscape to surround and set off a contemporary home by Coates Design Architects. The narrow spaces around the tall home needed structure and organization, and a thoughtful approach to layout and space programming. A concrete patio was installed with a Paloform Bento gas fire feature surrounded by lush, northwest planting. A horizontal board cedar fence provides privacy from the street and creates the cozy feeling of an outdoor room among the trees. LED low-voltage lighting by Kichler Lighting adds night-time warmth .
