The home’s façade features several contemporary accents that, combined, create an eye-catching grand entrance. I love to add an organic element to the exterior and the mahogany wood slats fulfill this component. They add a warmth that some contemporary homes are lacking. The experts at Four Seasons Outdoor Living completed my vision with their beautiful landscaping. Several patches of monkey grass line the large, rectangular concrete blocks that lead right up to the 8-foot high door. LBJ Construction brought my vision of a large, stunning doorway to life. The home originally had a standard 6’ 8” door. We removed the outdated window shutters for a more polished appearance. New windows and a brand new roof not only add to the curb appeal, but make for a much more energy efficient home in the heat of the Houston summer. I truly enjoyed working with these amazing professionals. This was an extremely fun project with a phenomenal outcome.

Mimicking the natural swirl of the marsh, this herringbone-laid pathway offers a whimsical focal point in this Lowcountry yard. The path also creates planting beds with shapes inspired by nature, filled with billowing wildflowers.

This brick path leads the eye from yards edge to the front door. It commands the space as planting beds, lawn and pathways all converge at the fringes.

Midtown Sky Garden by Hank White, FASLA, and Aaron Booher of HMWhite
This excursion to a spectacular workplace landscape will take visitors up high above the busy streets of Manhattan. The award-winning, 6,500 square-foot terrace of the Midtown Manhattan Sky Garden takes advantage of panoramic skyline views while providing an intimate garden backdrop to the mid-century-modern building’s newly-renovated interior workspace. Richly textured and seasonally diverse plantings include a dense blanket of drought-tolerant prairie grasses, wildflower perennials, and spring flowering bulbs, punctuated by flowering Crab Apple trees. At twilight, the garden evolves into a subtle stage set of textured plantings, rustling softly against the glow of a frosted glass parapet rail—a soothing space where workers can escape the conference room or the electrifying noise of the dense urban environment. The roof garden’s biophilic design has elevated employees’ well-being, productivity, and morale. Photo copyright Amy Stroud

Paver patio dining area overlooks a very private, green back yard. The edibles were planted in the middle garden. Nasturtium and herbs were the favorites. The bluestone patio (30"x30" pieces) defines a landing area near the gate entryway but it also is the only spot to get direct sun in the afternoon.

A backyard can be transformed from dull and empty (☹️) to a beautiful and inviting oasis (?) with the addition of a pool. Before the installation, the backyard may have consisted of just a patch of grass or a plain concrete slab. However, after the installation of a pool, the backyard becomes a place for entertainment, relaxation, and recreation.? The addition of a pool also increases the value of a home and provide an opportunity for homeowners to enjoy the outdoors in a new and exciting way. The possibilities for backyard design are endless and can include features such as decking, landscaping, lighting, and water features to create a personalized and unique outdoor living space. That's exactly what we like to hear!?

This gorgeous, walkable grass alternative is literally watered ONCE A MONTH folks!!! In the summertime! This is true water conservation!
Large, historic home from the 1930's overlooking downtown Santa Cruz. My clients are self-described "plantaholics" and tend to buy many plants, only to have them die. They have an extensive gardening area and low water budget. Our main goal was to make the overall design cohesive between various areas of the garden while utilizing interesting and unusual plant selections - a very fun project for me! We removed over 3,000 square feet of traditional grass and replaced it with several lawn alternatives. The first is a walkable groundcover that uses a fraction of the water of regular grass (and can be seen here in several seasons, one of which has tiny flowers); The second is a California native grass that grows long (or can be kept short) and can tolerate some shade. Both of these are excellent choices for clients with children or dogs who want a green patch without using excessive water. My clients love plants from Australia and South Africa so plants from the Proteacea and other Southern Hemisphere beauties are used predominantly throughout the project. Clean, flowing water is so important for wildlife and the beautiful stone fountain is a constant gathering spot for birds and other animals. My clients are beyond thrilled with their gorgeous, nature-filled garden and ever-expanding plant knowledge.
