This 1930's Barrington Hills farmhouse was in need of some TLC when it was purchased by this southern family of five who planned to make it their new home. The renovation taken on by Advance Design Studio's designer Scott Christensen and master carpenter Justin Davis included a custom porch, custom built in cabinetry in the living room and children's bedrooms, 2 children's on-suite baths, a guest powder room, a fabulous new master bath with custom closet and makeup area, a new upstairs laundry room, a workout basement, a mud room, new flooring and custom wainscot stairs with planked walls and ceilings throughout the home.
The home's original mechanicals were in dire need of updating, so HVAC, plumbing and electrical were all replaced with newer materials and equipment. A dramatic change to the exterior took place with the addition of a quaint standing seam metal roofed farmhouse porch perfect for sipping lemonade on a lazy hot summer day.
In addition to the changes to the home, a guest house on the property underwent a major transformation as well. Newly outfitted with updated gas and electric, a new stacking washer/dryer space was created along with an updated bath complete with a glass enclosed shower, something the bath did not previously have. A beautiful kitchenette with ample cabinetry space, refrigeration and a sink was transformed as well to provide all the comforts of home for guests visiting at the classic cottage retreat.
The biggest design challenge was to keep in line with the charm the old home possessed, all the while giving the family all the convenience and efficiency of modern functioning amenities. One of the most interesting uses of material was the porcelain "wood-looking" tile used in all the baths and most of the home's common areas. All the efficiency of porcelain tile, with the nostalgic look and feel of worn and weathered hardwood floors. The home’s casual entry has an 8" rustic antique barn wood look porcelain tile in a rich brown to create a warm and welcoming first impression.
Painted distressed cabinetry in muted shades of gray/green was used in the powder room to bring out the rustic feel of the space which was accentuated with wood planked walls and ceilings. Fresh white painted shaker cabinetry was used throughout the rest of the rooms, accentuated by bright chrome fixtures and muted pastel tones to create a calm and relaxing feeling throughout the home.
Custom cabinetry was designed and built by Advance Design specifically for a large 70” TV in the living room, for each of the children’s bedroom’s built in storage, custom closets, and book shelves, and for a mudroom fit with custom niches for each family member by name.
The ample master bath was fitted with double vanity areas in white. A generous shower with a bench features classic white subway tiles and light blue/green glass accents, as well as a large free standing soaking tub nestled under a window with double sconces to dim while relaxing in a luxurious bath. A custom classic white bookcase for plush towels greets you as you enter the sanctuary bath.

Where warmer temperatures and drier conditions make seasonal displays of cut evergreens a non-starter, create a winter windowbox that’s planted with lots of greenery in shades from emerald to lime and add a few seasonal touches. Here a bed of ivy (looks great year round) is tricked-out with white cyclamen, potted-up yellow peppers, and a few winter pansies. Can’t find peppers? Swap in fresh citrus such as kumquats. We think this one’s made for twinkle lights!

Inspired by the vivid tones of the surrounding waterways, we created a calming sanctuary. The grand, multi-story entry required us to define areas for greeting, staircase and sitting that were cohesive with overall design. Oversized chandelier's and art were used to enhance the soaring ceilings. The thread of the teal color weaves from room to room as a constant reminder of the beauty surrounding the home. Lush textures make each room a tactile experience as well as a visual pleasure. Robert Brantley Photography

Perched above High Park, this family home is a crisp and clean breath of fresh air! Lovingly designed by the homeowner to evoke a warm and inviting country feel, the interior of this home required a full renovation from the basement right up to the third floor with rooftop deck. Upon arriving, you are greeted with a generous entry and elegant dining space, complemented by a sitting area, wrapped in a bay window.
Central to the success of this home is a welcoming oak/white kitchen and living space facing the backyard. The windows across the back of the house shower the main floor in daylight, while the use of oak beams adds to the impact. Throughout the house, floor to ceiling millwork serves to keep all spaces open and enhance flow from one room to another.
The use of clever millwork continues on the second floor with the highly functional laundry room and customized closets for the children’s bedrooms. The third floor includes extensive millwork, a wood-clad master bedroom wall and an elegant ensuite. A walk out rooftop deck overlooking the backyard and canopy of trees complements the space. Design elements include the use of white, black, wood and warm metals. Brass accents are used on the interior, while a copper eaves serves to elevate the exterior finishes.

This bold graphite-wallpapered dining room greets guests upon entering this home. The equisite equestrian painting was chosen to be the focus of the room, with every other selection complementing this special piece of artwork.

Imagine stepping into your and being greeted by a haven that seamlessly blends the built and natural worlds. Sunlight filters through verdant leaves overhead, dappling a red wood deck that envelopes the trunk of a magnificent tree. This is not just an outdoor space; it's an oasis, a sanctuary where the lines between indoors and outdoors blur, and the presence of nature takes center stage.
At the heart of this oasis lies the existing tree, not merely an obstacle but the focal point, the star around which the entire design revolves. Built specifically to accommodate its presence, the cabinetry forms a sculptural embrace, wrapping around the base like a protective shroud. Crafted from weather resistant materials that echoes the tree's own earthy tones, the cabinetry blends seamlessly into the landscape.

Situated within downtown Minneapolis's historic Mill District neighborhood, this loft renovation breathes new life into a former flour mill building dating back to 1879. Originally two separate one-level loft units brimming with historic charm, the space now boasts a sprawling 4,200 sq. ft. of meticulously crafted design.
Upon entry, visitors are greeted by an expansive room crowned by a majestic 16.5-foot high wooden joist ceiling, offering breathtaking panoramas of the Mississippi River. Adding to the allure is an almost 16 ft x 20 ft steel and glass greenhouse, reminiscent of English conservatories, complete with a grand 12-foot-high castle-like door.

With a thoughtful use of lighting and carefully curated furniture, this 1,000 sq ft Mid-Levels apartment with unsightly columns and beams is transformed into a cosy Scandinavian home with a Japanese touch.
When you think of designing a home, one does not usually put Japanese and Nordic together. But Clifton was inspired by the compatibility of the two cultures, which both emphasise minimalism, to bring out this eye-catching fusion project.
Earth tones reminiscent of Scandinavian design are used throughout the apartment, allowing it to look more spacious and comfortable.
Upon entering the apartment, one is quickly greeted by the Japanese style living room, which oozes Zen with a faux fur carpet and flatter furniture pieces including a Fritz Hansen sofa in pink, side table from Habitat, dining table from HAY and pendent lamps from Louis Poulsen.
The apartment is blessed with a high ceiling, but nonetheless, its columns and beams originally made it appear smaller. But with a clever use of lighting, such as indirect lighting on top of the beams and strategic placement of lamps on the columns, the flaws are concealed and the unit appears taller, bigger and more comfortable.
Similarly, the kitchen is transformed into an open one with an island, so the owners, both social butterflies, can invite their friends over for gatherings.
Besides catering to the two adult owners, Clifton did not forget about their fur friend Buddy, a Bichon Frise. To ensure that Buddy does not feel left out at night, while ensuring the couple can have some privacy in their bedroom, a small square hole was made in the door for him to freely move in and out.

This monochromatic bathroom is soothing and serene; ready to greet morning and evening. Solid surface counters, porcealine flooring, custom mirros and specialty wall treatment.

A gourmet kitchen with a 12-foot island greets you as you enter the home. Additional details such as a wine storage display, a stunning dining room, and a custom breakfast nook all await.

This residence represents the dynamic collaboration between artist and architect. The architectural experience seeks to unite the tactile warmth of earth and clay with the compositional elegance of craft. Against a textured canvas of linen and limestone, light is leveraged to bring dimension and life to the architecture on every level.
Through the radical embrace of nature, guests are greeted by a 16’ tall Australian Brachychiton tree as they enter the double-height entry. The home is organized around a large, outdoor courtyard which creates fluid continuity and access between the indoor and outdoors. From a chandelier of ceramic bells to a locally sourced, custom dining table, every major element has been calibrated to add to timeless composition of the home.

This private residence, located in a planned community along Fort Loudoun Lake in Knoxville, Tennessee, is intended to be a forever home for the client couple and their family as the couple nears retirement.
Designed with family gatherings and lake views in mind, those entering the stone-clad cottage are greeted with immediate views of the water. Passing through an entry corridor and then through an oversized archway, the grand, vaulted living and dining areas flank the path to large sliding doors opening onto a covered veranda that overlooks the pool and lake beyond. The interior architecture is open and light, with two en suite master bedrooms on the main level and three guest suites tucked into the eaves over the garage.
The home’s furnishings are an eclectic mix of the homeowner’s unique collections, a blend of comfortable and curated. The exterior is monochromatic in color with shake siding and trim at the gable ends painted to complement the light tan and grays of the stone cladding, creating a French country feel. Custom-painted wood shutters and rich wood entry doors add additional character to the exterior.
