Here we used Trex’s Rope Swing boards for the deck and designed its multi-levels around the clients’ new hot tub. Because it’s a good idea to take breaks from long stays in a hot tub, we added a bench and private screened seating area — also made from Trex boards, topped with an attractive lattice design. www.deckandpatio.com

At Archadeck of Nova Scotia we love any size project big or small. But, that being said, we have a soft spot for the projects that let us show off our talents! This Halifax house was no exception. The owners wanted a space to suit their outdoor lifestyle with materials to last far into the future. The choices were quite simple: stone veneer, Timbertech composite decking and glass railing. What better way to create that stability than with a solid foundation, concrete columns and decorative stone veneer? The posts were all wrapped with stone and match the retaining wall which was installed to help with soil retention and give the backyard more definition (it’s not too hard on the eyes either). A set of well-lit steps will guide you up the multi-level deck. The built-in planters soften the hardness of the Timbertech composite deck and provide a little visual relief. The two-tone aesthetic of the deck and railing are a stunning feature which plays up contrasting tones. From there it’s a game of musical chairs; we recommend the big round one on a September evening with a glass of wine and cozy blanket. We haven’t gotten there quite yet, but this property has an amazing view (you will see soon enough!). As to not spoil the view, we installed TImbertech composite railing with glass panels. This allows you to take in the surrounding sights while relaxing and not have those pesky balusters in the way. In any Canadian backyard, there is always the dilemma of dealing with mosquitoes and black flies! Our solution to this itchy problem is to incorporate a screen room as part of your design. This screen room in particular has space for dining and lounging around a fireplace, perfect for the colder evenings! Ahhh…there’s the view! From the top level of the deck you can really get an appreciation for Nova Scotia. Life looks pretty good from the top of a multi-level deck. Once again, we installed a composite and glass railing on the new composite deck to capture the scenery. What puts the cherry on top of this project is the balcony! One of the greatest benefits of composite decking and railing is that it can be curved to create beautiful soft edges. Imagine sipping your morning coffee and watching the sunrise over the water. This cedar deck was a replacement for an older traditional deck with railings. We wanted to give the owner an open picture of the landscape with multiple access points and no railings to obscure that view.

This small ADA ramp with a powder coated aluminum hand rail provides elderly parents easy and safe access to this beachfront get away. The ramp is built with Wolf Rosewood colored PVC decking. The decking is a non-slip surface. Doug Woodside

Inspiration for a large transitional backyard deck remodel in Austin with no cover

The client wanted a deck to be connected to the rest of the yard and transition to the upper deck 10ft of grade to the patio on grade. The centrally located circular kitchen area services both the patio and the upper deck and gives lots of options whether it’s just the family or a party for 50. Minimizing rails and stairs during the transition from the upper deck to the lower deck on grade was critical to the clients. Adding the kitchen to the project without obstructing the view out the rear patio doors was also an important request from the client. The WOLF PVC Black Walnut accents and fascia really sets off the Driftwood field. Dutch Quality weathered ledge stone was used in the kitchen with a granite counter. Custom welded aluminum rails and EP Henry Bristol pavers are also featured. The built in flower beds extend the feel of the patio area and allow for plantings to be added. This project turned an unusable back yard and disconnected elevated deck into cohesive multi-level living space.

Tri-level aluminum deck with firetable. LED rope lighting was used under the handrails to provide ambient lighting. A cable railing system was installed to allow for a more broad visual sight line from any point on the deck. This Concord home had an existing multi-level wraparound covered porch in the front of the home that needed maintenance. The homeowners brought Tom Curren Companies in, to add on a new matching deck to their backyard and do a few touch ups in the front. These decks are both made with unique Tigerwood boards and surrounded by crisp white PVC Trim. Using Tigerwood results in a beautiful end-product, but requires meticulous and specific maintenance – on the existing front porch, this is all that was needed. We applied a fresh coat of Deckwise Natural Ipe Oil to maintain the beautiful rich colors of the exotic wood boards and painted the PVC Trim with Benjamin Moore white latex paint. In the backyard, our clients wanted a replication of the beautiful space in the front, with a few additional distinctive details that set this deck apart from any others we’ve built. We created a symmetrical deck off of the french doors in the back of the home, allowing ample space for outdoor living. Tigerwood tread stairs were placed off the front of the deck with two sets of encased metal grating stairs off to the side. Because of the nature of this exotic wood, it’s important to consider the deck pitch, and ventilation to aid with water run off. Discreetly mixed into the decking boards on this deck, , there is a thin strip of Carbochon cast iron trench grates that are strategically placed underneath the slight roof overhang to manage the water roll-off. To make use of the surrounding materials, our team relocated pebble stones that were already in the clients yard, to prepare the ground underneath the deck for water flow and irrigation. This stunning deck is rich in color, and the high level of craftsmanship is very apparent. The tiniest of details are truly the highlight of this project. From the iron trench grates, to the matching wood staircases for easy access to the ground level, this new deck adds another level of sophistication to the home. Working with exotic woods and high-end materials always results in a beautiful product adding value to the home, as well as happiness to its owners.

The original multiple decks and elevated patio blocked the pool and fractured the space. This design creates an elegant progression from the home’s interior to poolside. The wide stairs oriented towards the pool provide pool views from the entire deck. The interior level provides for relaxed seating and dining with the magnificence of nature. The descent of a short group of stairs leads to the outdoor kitchen level. The barbeque is bordered in stone topped with a countertop of granite. The outdoor kitchen level is positioned for easy access midway from either the pool or interior level. From the kitchen level an additional group of stairs flow down to the paver patio surrounding the pool. Also incorporated is a downstairs entry and ample space for storage beneath the deck sourced through an access panel. The design connects the interior to poolside by means of a rich and functional outdoor living design.

New deck built in double triangle worked well with the slope below, and allowed a paver patio to fit at top of the hill as well. Deck is Trex accents, pavers are Mutual Materials Paleo in Harvest blend.
