Our clients were looking to make this home their forever home and to create a warm and welcoming space that the whole family would enjoy returning to every day. One of our primary goals in this project was to change how our clients moved through their home. We tossed aside the existing walls that blocked off the kitchen and introduced a butler’s pantry to connect the kitchen directly to the dining room. Contrast is king in this home, and we utilized a variety of light and dark finishes to create distinctive layers and lean into opportunities for accents. To tie the space in this home together, we introduced warm hardwood flooring throughout the main level and selected a soft grey paint as our primary wall color. Kitchen- The heart of this home is most definitely the kitchen! We erased every trace of the original builder kitchen and created a space that welcomes one and all. The glorious island, with its light cabinetry and dramatic quartz countertop, provides the perfect gathering place for morning coffee and baking sessions. At the perimeter of the kitchen, we selected a handsome grey finish with a brushed linen effect for an extra touch of texture that ties in with the high variation backsplash tile giving us a softened handmade feel. Black metal accents from the hardware to the light fixtures unite the kitchen with the rest of the home. Butler’s Pantry- The Butler’s Pantry quickly became one of our favorite spaces in this home! We had fun with the backsplash tile patten (utilizing the same tile we highlighted in the kitchen but installed in a herringbone pattern). Continuing the warm tones through this space with the butcher block counter and open shelving, it works to unite the front and back of the house. Plus, this space is home to the kegerator with custom family tap handles! Mud Room- We wanted to make sure we gave this busy family a landing place for all their belongings. With plenty of cabinetry storage, a sweet built-in bench, and hooks galore there’s no more jockeying to find a home for coats. Fireplace- A double-sided fireplace means double the opportunity for a dramatic focal point! On the living room side (the tv-free grown-up zone) we utilized reclaimed wooden planks to add layers of texture and bring in more cozy warm vibes. On the family room side (aka the tv room) we mixed it up with a travertine ledger stone that ties in with the warm tones of the kitchen island. Staircase- The standard builder handrail was just not going to do it anymore! So, we leveled up designed a custom steel & wood railing for this home with a dark finish that allows it to contrast beautifully against the walls and tie in with the dark accent finishes throughout the home.

A large but pedestrian back yard became a glamorous playground for grown-ups. The vision started with a motion pool and cabana. As the design progressed, it grew to encompass the entire yard area. The Cabana is designed to embrace entertaining, with an interior living space, kitchenette, and an open-air covered hearth area. These environments seamlessly integrate and visually connect to the new garden. The Cabana also functions as a private Guest House, and takes advantage of the beautiful spring and summer weather, while providing a protected area in the cold and wet winter months. Sustainable materials are used throughout and features include an open hearth area with fireplace, an interior living space with kitchenette and bathroom suite, a spa tub and exercise pool. From builder standard to designer upgrade. A recent project of ours in Harrison NY had us taking an adequate builder designed kitchen to something much more special. The original layout led to traffic jams while entertaining and valuable storage was lost due to the fact that the cabinets did not go to the ceiling. The new design moves the refrigerator out of the traffic pattern that often lead to gridlock in previous years as well as providing ample storage for trays and baking sheets in the slim pantry. Grillwork doors allow for airflow from the air-conditioning vents, while still allowing for cabinets to the ceiling. A professional grade range replaces the old smaller model, with a heavy-duty hood to assure complete ventilation no matter what the cook creates. The microwave moves farther down the work triangle to assure that the heating of a cup of coffee or bag of popcorn need never interfere with the chef again. Equally of value is the island mini-frig not just to chill the occasional bottle of wine, but to keep the kids sodas out the main refrigerator. And then there is the desk/ command central area. The formerly blank wall where no piece of furniture seemed to fit, because of the radiator, has become an efficient home office. With room for two people to work, grown-ups can search Food Network for recipes while the kids do their homework – problem area solved!

Our clients, a young professional couple in their 30s, sent us inspiration images of very traditional living rooms chock full of blues & whites, golds and merlots, brown furniture, formal window treatments, and Oriental rugs. They wanted a RETREAT and entertaining space for grown-ups, but durable enough a room for kids learning how to behave in a civilized manner. Our aim was “youthfulize” their ideas into something fresh-but-timeless for a young and growing family by employing luminous colors, abstract art, and transitional decor.

These homeowners already had a finished basement, but found that they didn’t utilize the space well. Other than as a play area for the kids, the large space wasn’t welcoming for entertaining. Already happy with previous service they’d received from The Cabinet Store (laundry room cabinet storage!) they turned to us to help them give their basement a “grown-up feel.” Though they already had a large TV and some sitting furniture, the room needed an entertaining area. Here’s what we accomplished (see the photos below): We designed two bar areas for them, using cabinetry from our Countryside Cabinetry line – affordable and attractive. The cabinet doors are the Lancaster style in Birch with a Brownberry stain. We used a combination of flat center panel doors and beaded center panel doors to jazz it up. We also installed brand new Cambria (color Buckingham) on all the countertop surfaces. The homeowners (and all their friends!) love the new basement. And though it seems contrary, we’re not surprised that everyone tells them the room feels so much bigger even though we’ve added cabinetry and countertops to the space – if you use space well a room always seems more inviting. Best of all, this family is finally making great use of their basement!

This outdoor media room and kitchen had to meet the needs of a Houston family needing kid space and adult space. The kids wanted an outdoor audio visual area watch TV and movies. The grownups wanted an outdoor kitchen, bar and grilling area where they could enjoy themselves while watching the kids. And they all wanted a covered patio with places to sit between dips in the pool. However, the family had very limited space between the back of their house and their pool, and no room for anything in either of the side yards: Stringent homeowner association rules also required that any home modifications match the existing home's architecture, color and finishing materials. The pitch of the roof also had to be such that it didn't overlap the bottom of the second-story windows above. So here's what we came up with: A 40-foot-long by 11-foot- deep roof extension off the back of the house (longer than most, but with good engineering specs and design work, we were able to preserve the structural integrity): At one end of the covered patio below is a 12-foot by 8-foot outdoor living room with a custom audio-visual cabinet. At the other is an L-shaped, 8-foot-square outdoor kitchen island with a built-in commercial-grade RCS grill, a 4-by-8-foot outdoor refrigerator and a outdoor icemaker. Keeping in line with the existing home's beige siding, white trim and brown accent façade, we helped the homeowner choose appropriate finishing materials: Austin Western limestone (mostly white with beige accents) for the TV cabinet, kitchen island and column supports; Old English travertine (beige) for the countertops) and white, fluted columns. The Old English travertine countertop has a raised back for a bar with counter seating. The diamond-pattern tile backsplash also features inset fleur de lis accents. The family is more than pleased with the results - two outdoor rooms with two different functions - all within the same covered outdoor living space!

Rodwin Architecture and Skycastle Homes Location: Boulder, Colorado, United States The design of this 4500sf, home….the steeply-sloping site; we thought of it as a tree house for grownups. Nestled into the hillside and surrounding by Aspens as well as Lodgepole and Ponderosa Pines, this HERS 38 home combines energy efficiency with a strong mountain palette of stone, stucco, and timber to blend with its surroundings. A strong stone base breaks up the massing of the three-story façade, with an expansive deck establishing a piano noble (elevated main floor) to take full advantage of the property’s amazing views and the owners’ desire for indoor/outdoor living. High ceilings and large windows create a light, spacious entry, which terminates into a custom hickory stair that winds its way to the center of the home. The open floor plan and French doors connect the great room to a gourmet kitchen, dining room, and flagstone patio terraced into the landscaped hillside. Landing dramatically in the great room, a stone fireplace anchors the space, while a wall of glass opens to the soaring covered deck, whose structure was designed to minimize any obstructions to the view.

Our team renovated and completely furnished our client’s Tualatin home three years ago and when they planned a move to a much larger home in Lake Oswego, they included ATIID in a major renovation, new addition and furnishings. We first determined the best way to incorporate the furniture we’d recently sourced for every room in their current home, then upgrade new formal and entertaining spaces big time with color and style! In the living room, we looked to custom furnishings, natural textures and a splash of fresh green to create the ultimate family gathering space. Hand painted wallpaper inspired our formal dining room, where bold blue and mixed metals meet warm wood tones and an awe-inspiring chandelier. Wallpaper also added interest in the powder bath, master and guest bedrooms. The most significant change to the home was the addition of the “Play Room,” outdoor living room and swimming pool for decidedly grown-up entertaining. For this couple, planning to move back to their rambler home in Arlington after living overseas for few years, they were ready to get rid of clutter, clean up their grown-up kids’ boxes, and transform their home into their dream home for their golden years. The old home included a box-like 8 feet x 10 feet kitchen, no family room, three small bedrooms and two back to back small bathrooms. The laundry room was located in a small dark space of the unfinished basement. This home is located in a cul-de-sac, on an uphill lot, of a very secluded neighborhood with lots of new homes just being built around them. The couple consulted an architectural firm in past but never were satisfied with the final plans. They approached Michael Nash Custom Kitchens hoping for fresh ideas. The backyard and side yard are wooded and the existing structure was too close to building restriction lines. We developed design plans and applied for special permits to achieve our client’s goals. The remodel includes a family room, sunroom, breakfast area, home office, large master bedroom suite, large walk-in closet, main level laundry room, lots of windows, front porch, back deck, and most important than all an elevator from lower to upper level given them and their close relative a necessary easier access. The new plan added extra dimensions to this rambler on all four sides. Starting from the front, we excavated to allow a first level entrance, storage, and elevator room. Building just above it, is a 12 feet x 30 feet covered porch with a leading brick staircase. A contemporary cedar rail with horizontal stainless steel cable rail system on both the front porch and the back deck sets off this project from any others in area. A new foyer with double frosted stainless-steel door was added which contains the elevator. The garage door was widened and a solid cedar door was installed to compliment the cedar siding. The left side of this rambler was excavated to allow a storage off the garage and extension of one of the old bedrooms to be converted to a large master bedroom suite, master bathroom suite and walk-in closet. We installed matching brick for a seam-less exterior look. The entire house was furnished with new Italian imported highly custom stainless-steel windows and doors. We removed several brick and block structure walls to put doors and floor to ceiling windows. A full walk in shower with barn style frameless glass doors, double vanities covered with selective stone, floor to ceiling porcelain tile make the master bathroom highly accessible. The other two bedrooms were reconfigured with new closets, wider doorways, new wood floors and wider windows. Just outside of the bedroom, a new laundry room closet was a major upgrade. A second HVAC system was added in the attic for all new areas. The back side of the master bedroom was covered with floor to ceiling windows and a door to step into a new deck covered in trex and cable railing. This addition provides a view to wooded area of the home. By excavating and leveling the backyard, we constructed a two story 15’x 40’ addition that provided the tall ceiling for the family room just adjacent to new deck, a breakfast area a few steps away from the remodeled kitchen. Upscale stainless-steel appliances, floor to ceiling white custom cabinetry and quartz counter top, and fun lighting improved this back section of the house with its increased lighting and available work space. Just below this addition, there is extra space for exercise and storage room. This room has a pair of sliding doors allowing more light inside. The right elevation has a trapezoid shape addition with floor to ceiling windows and space used as a sunroom/in-home office. Wide plank wood floors were installed throughout the main level for continuity. The hall bathroom was gutted and expanded to allow a new soaking tub and large vanity. The basement half bathroom was converted to a full bathroom, new flooring and lighting in the entire basement changed the purpose of the basement for entertainment and spending time with grandkids. Off white and soft tone were used inside and out as the color schemes to make this rambler spacious and illuminated. Final grade and landscaping, by adding a few trees, trimming the old cherry and walnut trees in backyard, saddling the yard, and a new concrete driveway and walkway made this home a unique and charming gem in the neighborhood.

This project is near-and-dear to my heart, as it's my daughter's room. We wanted to transition her from a little girl's room to a more grown-up look (but not too grown up), with LOTS of storage. She LOVES it!

Our clients brought us in to update their first floor living spaces, comprised of the kitchen, dining, and living room. The living room had a large, but shallow, soffit built out on one wall that never felt fully realized. The clients asked that we design a new custom built-in to incorporate their TV and make sense of this architectural feature in the space. What I immediately noticed about the room layout though was that having the TV on this wall meant that the their backs and all of their furniture was turned away from the floating, two-story fireplace in the middle of their home. This layout seemed less than ideal and kept the family from truly enjoying another key feature of the space–the fireplace–that was important to them. After more consideration, I asked if they would be open to a design for the large soffit wall that was beautiful, provided storage and interest but did not house their TV. I wanted to re-orient the room toward the fireplace and hang an art frame tv on the fireplace wall so that the furniture set up could once again it. We wanted the whole space to feel modern but with a nod to the mountains, a bit woodsy, and definitely cozy. I think layering in this gorgeous walnut wood with their already beautiful maple floors and birch cabinetry was the perfect touch and to add extra interests and drama, we engineered custom, fluted or routed panels in various patterns for the center section. We anchored the spaces and the large volumes with the repeating dark charcoals, almost blacks in the soapstone countertops for the bookshelves, painted soffit, concrete coffee table and the fireplace tile. And the sagey, gray green couch in velvet gives the space that warm hug finish. The rebuilding of the fireplace was a big undertaking. We changed it from a wood-burning fireplace to a gas one so that we could also eliminate the sharp and bulky surround that had become a hazard for kids and grownups alike. This change greatly streamlined its profile and allowed for a low and long fireplace insert that would balance the large TV hanging above it. We were also eager to reclad the fireplace with larger format tile with less contrasting grout and paint out the chimney stack. In the kitchen, we traded out the dark backsplash for this skinny herringbone marble one in tones of warm whites, grays and tans. We used it a White Lux quartzite with a dramatic 2.5″ mitered edge in the kitchen to complement it and kept the perimeter countertops a dark granite. New bar stools, sink, faucet, cabinet hardware and the kitchen refresh was complete!

The Contemporary Exotic showhome in Calgary’s vibrant NE community of Red Embers blends texture, color, and natural elegance across its 1,465 sq. ft. of living space. Vibrant colors mixed with fun patterns bring energy and personality to the pre-teen bedroom in this showhome. The space feels playful yet grown-up, using layered hues and graphic prints to reflect a growing child’s creativity and independence. Soft furnishings and wallpaper help tie the palette together, creating a cozy retreat that can evolve as tastes change. Thoughtful accents and decor encourage imagination while still fitting seamlessly with the Contemporary Exotic style throughout the rest of the home.

To encourage their children to visit with their grandchildren, our clients asked us to create a guest bedroom with an en suite nursery suitable for boys or girls. They provided the elegant crib and we added custom bedding plus a faux snow leopard throw for soft texture and middle-of-the-night snuggling with baby. The color-block window panels and cornice boxes with Swarovski crystals match the window treatment behind the grownup bed and the Shimmer Suede wall treatment is consistent throughout the space.
