This small kitchen was updated by refacing the cabinets with two tone colors that gave enough contrast to bring the kitchen from an outdated space to a beautiful inviting space. To solve the storage problem, we installed a new pantry. The bead-board backing on the peninsula gave an added interest to the space. The upper cabinets were done in a mist color, while the lower cabinets were done in a midnight color. To finish the new look, we installed an Aria quartz countertop and an igloo ceramic subway tile backsplash. Now this kitchen is ready to be shared with their family and friends.

What began as a problem-solving exercise to control excessive wind in the courtyard of a newly-built semi-custom Spanish Colonial Revival home in Orinda, CA, culminated in a true work of art. The hand-crafted metal and resin screen design began with a traditional Moorish star pattern that was scaled up then distorted slightly. Two-inch wide steel bars are interwoven to create a frame holding opaque resin panels that block both the wind and views from the neighboring property. Bland concrete floors were replaced with bespoke cement tiles that continue the Moorish star pattern and complete the client’s vision of a Spanish retreat in the California hills.

The room, architecture and decor did not lend itself to a place for electronic equipment. The homeowner did not want to see any black boxes within the room. So we mounted the equipment vertically behind the 75" Sony XBR TV with Flagship Triad Soundbar on a articulating arm TV mount able to be easily moved out for access and service. Subwoofer mounted in the ceiling shown upper right of TV and Triad side/rear channels not shown. All easily controlled by a Control 4 SR260 remote or Control 4 7" Touchpanel within the room. Problems solved again and again!

his shower used to be a closet. We borrowed three feet from an adjacent hall closet (while still retaining enough closet space) to build it, and this kind of problem solving is one of our favorite parts of design. Finding unexpected ways to lay out a space is a thrill, and this bathroom was so cramped--a big clawfoot tub used to sit in the door swing area here--that carving this walk-in shower out of borrowed space made the bathroom feel twice as big. Keeping our palette clean and bright--shades of pale gray and white with polished nickel accents--also kept the look fresh and modern.

What is an ADU: Accessory Dwelling Units: An accessory dwelling unit, usually just called an ADU, is a secondary housing unit on a single-family residential lot. The term “accessory dwelling unit” is a institutional-sounding name, but it’s the most commonly-used term across the country to describe this type of housing. This full custom library was designed and built in stained birch to hold approximately 4,500 books. The project included floor-to-ceiling adjustable shelving, a sliding bookcase system that allows five units to share the same footprint while remaining full accessible, sliding library ladders engineered for uneven flooring and a 4’ x 8’ island with open storage, drawers, and seating on both ends. Starting from conceptual sketch by an interior designer, we worked with the client and designer to clarify priorities and design the parts that no one knew how to build making a functional working library. The result is complete system that balances high storage capacity with practical daily use.

Although large, this open floor plan provided many unique challenges. With only one wall in a room with many angles and traffic pathways to seven other areas our work was cut out for us. Problems solved! In the end a beautiful, casual, comfortable conversational space was delivered with a coastal contemporary sophistication.

This San Francisco condo has an open floor plan and windows galore, displaying expansive views of downtown and the Bay Bridge. The biggest challenge was where to put a television when you want to also have your seating face the view. The solution: a projector sitting on custom-made walnut floating shelves and a screen that drops down. Once that problem whas solved the furniture and decor was the icing on the cake.
