After 38 years of hosting an antique show as their major fundraiser, the NHA decided instead to launch their inaugural "Nantucket by Design". It was a week long event celebrating design, culminating in a gala on August 6, 2016. Four designers, including myself, were asked to contribute their talents to design the seating areas the party goers would enjoy. This was the space I designed.

Signature Design Interiors enjoyed transforming this family’s traditional basement into a modern family space for watching sports and movies that could also double as the perfect setting for entertaining friends and guests. Multiple comfortable seating areas were needed and a complete update to all the finishes, from top to bottom, was required.
A classy color palette of platinum, champagne, and smoky gray ties all of the spaces together, while geometric shapes and patterns add pops of interest. Every surface was touched, from the flooring to the walls and ceilings and all new furnishings were added.
One of the most traditional architectural features in the existing space was the red brick fireplace, accent wall and arches. We painted those white and gave it a distressed finish. Berber carpeting was replaced with an engineered wood flooring with a weathered texture, which is easy to maintain and clean.
In the television viewing area, a microfiber sectional is accented with a series of hexagonal tables that have been grouped together to form a multi-surface coffee table with depth, creating an unexpected focal point to the room. A rich leather accent chair and luxe area rug with a modern floral pattern ties in the overall color scheme. New geometric patterned window treatments provide the perfect frame for the wall mounted flat screen television. Oval table lamps in a brushed silver finish add not only light, but also tons of style. Just behind the sofa, there is a custom designed console table with built-in electrical and USB outlets that is paired with leather stools for additional seating when needed. Floor outlets were installed under the sectional in order to get power to the console table. How’s that for charging convenience?
Behind the TV area and beside the bar is a small sitting area. It had an existing metal pendant light, which served as a source of design inspiration to build upon. Here, we added a table for games with leather chairs that compliment those at the console table. The family’s sports memorabilia is featured on the walls and the floor is punctuated with a fantastic area rug that brings in our color theme and a dramatic geometric pattern.
We are so pleased with the results and wish our clients many years of cheering on their favorite sports teams, watching movies, and hosting great parties in their new modern basement!

Dennis and Joe have a large, light-filled house. New construction meant lofted space and open floor plans with traditional styling. Running a busy dental practice by day and engaged in a rich social life by night, this couple needed a professional to take the lead on making their house a home.
That’s my cue!
They wanted to take risks, and stay away from “matchy-matchy”. We gussied up a plain ol’ TV room and gave it a healthy dose of luxury.
Our plan was initially inspired by an abstract painting hanging over their stone fireplace. We brought in their love of the outdoors to make things cozy and used family furniture whenever possible for nostalgia and comfort.
I took their love for one-of-a-kind objects and started making a design plan, aiming to solve their biggest frustration: the family room. They had a tortured relationship with a “forgotten family room,” a great space that was spacious and bright, but not at all cozy or joyful, and certainly not “them.”
I wanted to create a cozy space functional for everyday curling up with puppies and watching TV after dinner, yet chic enough for hosting the pre-dinner kitchen overflow and cocktails during parties.
I went looking for contrasting textures and materials. I wanted to balance patterns and scale, and use non-traditional colors as neutrals to create an overall sense of “BAM!”
Dennis and Joe loved the nod to the classics juxtaposed with new and different globally-inspired pieces. For this project our design aesthetic can be described as Middle Eastern/tribal meets mid-century modern. We played to their sensible side with proportion and balance, and stayed as far away from boring/bleh as we could.
You could say this room was pretty successful...It was featured in DC Modern Luxury. (#nobigdeal, right?)
From there we moved on to other spaces.. We added colorful pillows and sheer drapery to finish off their formal living room. We kept an inherited bedroom set from Dennis’ Mom and added color, draperies, and pillows to overhaul the guest bedroom.
Their project was not a rip-and-replace, we weren’t starting from scratch with a blank piece of paper.
Rather, our goal was to take what was already there and make it better, more like them. Using functionality first, we focused on giving the house a soothing, joyful aesthetic. We upped the chic factor by a gajillion and helped them find their ‘happy’ at home. See more Safferstone stuff at www.safferstone.com. Inspiration for a rustic brown one-story wood gable roof remodel in Seattle

An expansive patio remodel turned modern and unique. With separate sitting areas for lounging, dining, and entertainment, this space will host any party this client may ever need!

Add a little glam to your ghoul and cause a scene that screams "brilliant," with our frightfully affordable Beaded Skull. You won't have to strain your brain to conjure up a whole host of uses, so get a haunted house full. Hide several behind the finger foods on your Halloween buffet, use them as party favors, or carry one as a prop to your devilish disguise.

The client hosts frequent parties so it was important to create a separate bar area. A wine cooler and refrigerator sit below a wall indentation, providing an area to mix drinks.
We installed a Miele range and accompanying downdraft along with a white Miele oven that seamlessly blends into the cabinetry.

Perfect for smaller nooks, the folding café table is a great addition to your outdoor space for hosting parties and other events. Materials are made to withstand the elements and require little maintenance, but never compromise on long-lasting quality.

Though the yard is small, it can now host a major party. Guests are drawn to the anchoring outdoor kitchen, complete with a custom trellis as the backdrop. The palette is calm and refined: grey limestone pairs perfectly well with the grey wood trellis.
