This is the home of an area pediatrician and her retired neurosurgeon husband near Augusta in the Belgrade Lakes Region of Maine. The home faces out on one of the largest lakes in the area. The 5,000 square foot house was built on the grounds of a former summer camp and features a soaring two-story great room, kitchen and dining area, a den with a panoramic view of the lake, four bedrooms and a second-floor “tower” office for the pediatrician. More than 8,000 square feet of Englert Series `1300 standing seam metal roof was used for the main house and adjacent garage. The color of the 24 gauge, 20 inch wide standing seam panel is patina green. The primary challenge during installation was the severe 16/12 pitch of the roof and the installation of metal around the dormers on the side of the house facing the lakefront. David Barker of Farmingdale, Maine was the general contractor. C.O. Beck & Sons of Waterville, Maine was the metal roofing company. Installed more than a decade ago, the color and finish of this 1 ½-inch mechanically seamed roof remains as fresh as the day it was installed, despite the harsh, cold winters of the region.

Despite its curated appeal, Stacy has dubbed the room as Will's "man cave". "He watches sports in there every night!" she says with a laugh. Not ones to trade in pieces for the sake of age, Weiss and Carpenter have carried many of their furnishings with them as they moved from place to place. "We did a few new things ... as configurations had changed," Stacy explains, "but I usually hang onto my furnishings." Case in point is the couple's 18-year-old Italian sofa. "The fabric was shot, so I bought blue denim and had a local seamstress recover it," she says. Sofa: Charles, B&B Italia

This couple came to us as newly transplanted homeowners in Sterling, MA, uprooted from Rochester, MA so they could be closer to their growing family and granddaughter. The former kitchen was a bit of a “Plain Jane”, but we transformed it into a charming, modern country farmhouse kitchen. The custom paint color on the cabinets came from a Wood-Mode sample called “Agate.” This lovely paint color is a chameleon, ranging from gray/green, to a beautiful blue hue depending on the lighting conditions. The uniqueness of this color is what caught the homeowner’s eye and it has become a customer favorite. This Sterling home is the perfect setting for such a beautiful color! As a trained chef and former restaurant owner, the husband does all the cooking in the house. Ample room was needed for prepping and serving, so he loves the long, wide peninsula. A full-height quartz backsplash behind the range and sink make for easy clean up. Very deep drawers flank both sides of the range, and the top drawer has special storage for spices. The cabinet over the refrigerator has vertical partitions for both cookie sheets, trays and pans. A tall pantry to the right of the refrigerator is equipped with heavy duty wood rollouts perfect for storing dry goods. Conveniently located to the right of the sink is a double trash cabinet. The end of the peninsula also has a 27” wide cabinet with dual rollouts storing small appliances, casserole dishes & Tupperware. The new space has plenty of room for prepping, cooking and entertaining family and guests in the adjacent dining room. Stepping outside the “white & gray” of common paints into this beautiful custom color has delighted these customers and their friends. We find it both inviting and soothing, a cool color that will be stylish for years to come!   Download our free ebook, Creating the Ideal Kitchen. DOWNLOAD NOW   The homeowners came to us looking to update the kitchen in their historic 1897 home. The home had gone through an extensive renovation several years earlier that added a master bedroom suite and updates to the front façade. The kitchen however was not part of that update and a prior 1990’s update had left much to be desired. The client is an avid cook, and it was just not very functional for the family. The original kitchen was very choppy and included a large eat in area that took up more than its fair share of the space. On the wish list was a place where the family could comfortably congregate, that was easy and to cook in, that feels lived in and in check with the rest of the home’s décor. They also wanted a space that was not cluttered and dark – a happy, light and airy room. A small powder room off the space also needed some attention so we set out to include that in the remodel as well. See that arch in the neighboring dining room? The homeowner really wanted to make the opening to the dining room an arch to match, so we incorporated that into the design. Another unfortunate eyesore was the state of the ceiling and soffits. Turns out it was just a series of shortcuts from the prior renovation, and we were surprised and delighted that we were easily able to flatten out almost the entire ceiling with a couple of little reworks. Other changes we made were to add new windows that were appropriate to the new design, which included moving the sink window over slightly to give the work zone more breathing room. We also adjusted the height of the windows in what was previously the eat-in area that were too low for a countertop to work. We tried to keep an old island in the plan since it was a well-loved vintage find, but the tradeoff for the function of the new island was not worth it in the end. We hope the old found a new home, perhaps as a potting table. Our carpenters labored every detail from chainsaws to the finest of chisels and brad nails to achieve this eclectic industrial design. This project was not about just putting two things together, it was about coming up with the best solutions to accomplish the overall vision. For the art, I chose that was graphic and bold. There's a youthful feeling with original art and the arrangement creates a focal point for the room while balancing the large screen TV. Lucite, soft edges and texture dominate while the layout is well thought out for the creature comforts of everyday living. Even though space was limited, I was still able to include comfortable seating for pre-theatre or dinner gatherings. Count them…the sofa holds 3, 2 Ottomans, the 3 lucite bright yellow bar stools, the lounge chair, 2 side chairs, the upholstered chair by the waterfall desk and if you add the 4 chairs for the dining area, you're at 16, and this doesn’t count the custom coffee table with upholstered seating!
