Summary of Scope: gut renovation/reconfiguration of kitchen, coffee bar, mudroom, powder room, 2 kids baths, guest bath, master bath and dressing room, kids study and playroom, study/office, laundry room, restoration of windows, adding wallpapers and window treatments Background/description: The house was built in 1908, my clients are only the 3rd owners of the house. The prior owner lived there from 1940s until she died at age of 98! The old home had loads of character and charm but was in pretty bad condition and desperately needed updates. The clients purchased the home a few years ago and did some work before they moved in (roof, HVAC, electrical) but decided to live in the house for a 6 months or so before embarking on the next renovation phase. I had worked with the clients previously on the wife's office space and a few projects in a previous home including the nursery design for their first child so they reached out when they were ready to start thinking about the interior renovations. The goal was to respect and enhance the historic architecture of the home but make the spaces more functional for this couple with two small kids. Clients were open to color and some more bold/unexpected design choices. The design style is updated traditional with some eclectic elements. An early design decision was to incorporate a dark colored french range which would be the focal point of the kitchen and to do dark high gloss lacquered cabinets in the adjacent coffee bar, and we ultimately went with dark green.

With bathroom features including custom glass decorative tile, double shower heads, built in bench seating in the shower, integrated skylight, rich dark stained cherry cabinetry all finished with modern colors and materials, This master bathroom designed by Normandy Design Manager Troy Pavelka embodied a relaxing retreat for these La Grange Park homeowners.

This coffee table is clearly not used for coffee – nor does it actually have to be. What’s the star in this scene? This large geode-like agate rock of course – absolutely gorgeous! “No two are alike,” designer MaRae Simone says. “You shouldn’t want what everybody else has. I want you to be the only one with something like this.” Indeed, MaRae is a big fan of rocks like these for a reason. You can see how the ADU fits in nicely behind the main house and garage. The garage had to be shortened a bit too fit the ADU behind it with proper clearances. This homeowner came to us with her basic design ready for us to execute for her kitchen, but also asked us to design and update her entry, sunroom and fireplace. Her kitchen was 80’s standard builder grade cabinetry and laminate countertops and she had a knee wall separating her kitchen from the family room. We removed that wall and installed a custom cabinetry buffet to complement the cabinetry of the kitchen, allowing for access from all sides. We removed a desk area in the kitchen and converted it to a closed organization station complete with a charging station for phones and computers. Calcutta Quartzite countertops were used throughout and continued seamlessly up the walls as a backsplash to create a wow factor. We converted a closet into a pantry cabinet, and new stainless appliances, including a microwave drawer completed this renovation. Additionally, we updated her sunroom by removing the “popcorn” textured ceiling and gave it a fresh updated coat of paint. We installed 12x24 tile floor giving the room a simple classic transformation. Finally, we renewed the fireplace area, by building a custom mantle and adding wood paneling and trim to soften the marble fireplace face and a simple coat of paint in the entry and a new chandelier brought a lighter and fresher impact upon entering the home.

This Master Bathroom renovation included removing outdated fixtures and finishes, relocating the shower and tub, and creating a lighter brighter space. Tongue and Groove 1" x 6" V joint pine planks were applied to the walls and ceilings and painted white. Schluter tile backer and linear drain were used in the curb-less shower. Rainhead shower, and bath fixtures in Moen oil rubbed bronze finish.

A Gilmans Kitchens and Baths - Design Build Project (REMMIES Award Winning Kitchen) The original kitchen lacked counter space and seating for the homeowners and their family and friends. It was important for the homeowners to utilize every inch of usable space for storage, function and entertaining, so many organizational inserts were used in the kitchen design. Bamboo cabinets, cork flooring and neolith countertops were used in the design. Storage Solutions include a spice pull-out, towel pull-out, pantry pull outs and lemans corner cabinets. Bifold lift up cabinets were also used for convenience. Storage under and behind the bench was used to store pet items. They were having a pool built as well and really wanted to have a nice space to enjoy their backyard. We did demo work to remove an existing patio, planters and a pond. Their new space consists of 900 SF of patio area covered with a Versailles pattern travertine. The new freestanding covered patio with a breezeway is 650 SF with brick columns and arches to match the home. A small covered area was built alongside the outdoor kitchen. The ceiling is painted tongue and groove with beautiful reclaimed beams. The fireplace is a custom masonry wood burning fireplace with a cast stone mantle. The knee walls built to the side of the fireplace are complemented with two cast stone benches. The outdoor kitchen is 12 linear feet with a granite counter and back splash and brick fascia. Designer Dawn Johns specified Norcraft Cabinetry’s Cottage Maple door style in White for the bathroom vanity and wall cabinet above the toilet for additional storage. The beadboard door style is a staple design piece for any coastal design and brings some subtle texture to the space. A Recycled Glass Surface from Curava in the color Savaii was selected for the vanity countertop and was a unique way to include natural elements that resemble the look of sea glass into this coastal space. The vanity was complete with the Ribbon & Reed Hardware in Pewter Antique from Top Knobs Hardware. Mikonos 12x24 tile in Coral from Tesoro was used for the bathroom floor as well as the shower walls in a vertical layout. A glass and stone linear mosaic in Blue Ice Blend was used as a vertical decorative panel on the shower wall and Ocean Stones Sliced Pebbles in White Tumbled from Tesoro were used on the shower floor. The shower was complete with a recessed niche and a frameless glass hinge door. Coastal décor was used to complete the space such as a rustic framed mirror and nautical inspired light fixture.

This used to be a completely unfinished basement with concrete floors, cinder block walls, and exposed floor joists above. The homeowners wanted to finish the space to include a wet bar, powder room, separate play room for their daughters, bar seating for watching tv and entertaining, as well as a finished living space with a television with hidden surround sound speakers throughout the space. They also requested some unfinished spaces; one for exercise equipment, and one for HVAC, water heater, and extra storage. With those requests in mind, I designed the basement with the above required spaces, while working with the contractor on what components needed to be moved. The homeowner also loved the idea of sliding barn doors, which we were able to use as at the opening to the unfinished storage/HVAC area.

Because the original home already had a large walk-in pantry with its own sink and microwave, we were able to create not only a functional kitchen, but a fabulous focal point with the custom 10’ wide hood surrounding the 48” Wolf Range. The oversized island incorporates (2) Asko dishwashers, lower in height to accommodate the extra thick mitered Italian porcelain countertop. The four children have all the elbow room and knee space needed.

This traditional bi-color painted kitchen was a remodel project we did in historic Glendale, OH. The original kitchen area was dark, out-dated, had soffits at the ceiling and was subdivided with a knee wall which really chopped up the room. We opened the space up with a larger window, removed the soffits, added a lot more lighting, and added a nice of touch of creativity to the white perimeter with a touch of color in the island and matching hood. The homeowners empty nester lifestyle included entertaining friends and family, hosting local neighborhood planning meetings, and enjoying quiet mornings together before heading out to their daily activities. The wife wanted a way to bring a bit of their beautiful backyard into the kitchen, so using the soft bluish green color accomplished that nicely.
