The space in the foreground is the original house. The wall with the railing, top step, and piano, is the existing exterior wall. This area used to be made up of individual rooms. Now it is part of the new open floor plan. Everything beyond the railing and steps, is new construction. The large new beam above the railing, is supporting the weight of the existing roof, where the load-bearing wall was removed. The hallway is leading to the family room and bedroom additions. You can see, with the change in elevation, where the dip in the backyard was located. Our vision for this new-build condo was to create a captivating space that celebrates our client’s individuality, bringing together a diverse mix of styles, textures, and elements while maintaining a cohesive and contemporary feel. It combines the fresh, clean look of white as the predominant color with eclectic accents that add our client’s personality and character to the space. There are several “areas'' within this multi-functional space. A large sectional in a greige velvet serves as the centerpiece of the seating area, grounded by pops of blue and pink in the custom Morrocan rug. The cobalt blue theme is carried throughout, seen in the accents, art and even the ombre glass console table of the entry. A set of two blue swivel chairs by the windows, are the perfect setting for a glass of wine in the early evening as the light glistens in through the custom white sheers. The airy dining table is made of glass and carved marble and surrounded by chrome sculptural dining chairs. Above, the multi-faceted antique mirror multi-pendant chandelier drips down from the high ceiling. Our client’s antique carved wood chairs, reupholstered in a linen zebra, flank the selenite and brass bar cabinet. In the corner by the fireplace, a lucite and cowhide desk is paired with a brightly colored vintage chair. On the right of the fireplace, a leather swing, perfectly suited for reading. Lastly, the white kitchen with shimmering blue quartzite countertops brings the design in full circle.

The owners have a great modern aesthetic and also wanted to use just a few different materials which created a strong and simple palette. This sitting room off of the kitchen became the main hangout space for family, friends and more for our clients located in Birmingham, MI. Completed in September of 2023, the space needed to provide as much seating and flexibility as possible for people to gather. We also needed to maintain access to the adjacent patio. Previously used as a breakfast nook, this small sunroom contained oversized and bulky furniture along its walls. To reinvent this space, we added a custom sofa, two lounge chairs, and two ottomans that could be re-arranged for various uses. During the summer months, when circulation is needed at the patio doorway, the accent chairs fit perfectly along the opposite wall and smaller, moveable ottomans are in place at the doorwall. When not in use, the ottomans tuck away in our custom designed coffee table and keep this space flexible and functional. The individually placed chairs provided symmetry and elegance along either side of the sofa. Our large central cocktail table acts as an additional place to set out food or dine over. Layered lighting provides options for daytime use as well as evening reading. And finally, the custom area rug anchors and defines the space and holds together this elevated and flexible sunroom. The result is both beautiful and functional for year round use!

Our design team rose to the occasion, making the yellow backsplash tile the true star of the show while the grey quartz counter tops and classic white shaker cabinets kept the space feeling contemporary and fresh. Incorporation of the original skylight, the vaulted ceiling, and full light glass patio doors add a sense of spaciousness and connection to the outdoors that had been lacking in the original space. Hardwood flooring color trends in 2017 were all about extremes, with two of the dominant themes being at the opposite ends of the spectrum.
