Tired of seeing the same old shit? I sure am.
Why does every kitchen on this website look like it came out of a catalog, all shiny and fake, never used? No character, no history. Just shit you buy online and screw to the wall. Aren't these kitchens a little ostentatious? Like kitchens for people with too many houses. Why? Because it's all bullshit. These kitchens aren't being shown off here because they feed people. All they feed is the ego. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a commie. I'm not saying people should eat for free. Heck, I hate the homeless. Anyway, our kitchen feeds people. It's the backbone of a new program of sustainability. Teaching the children to care for the land and the food they grow. Food is work and work is food. I'm not sayin' you should feel guilty spending $500 bucks on a blender when 48.1 million Americans live in food-insecure households, including more than 15 million children. I'm just sayin' if you're gonna build somethin' do it with integrity and good taste. Trust yourself (not that I do that). Don't just regurgitate what you see in catalogs ( I steal shit right outta the book). Don't just follow your dreams. Anybody can do that. Live the myth, that's what we do.
When remodeling it seems people put all the good shit in a dumpster and all the lame shit on display. First thing we do is get in that dumpster!

Before – Staircase: Unsafe, Worn, and Severely Outdated
The original staircase was in unsafe condition, with loose, unstable steps covered in moldy carpet and a strong pet odor. The metal railings were rusted, chipped, and visually unappealing, adding to the overall sense of neglect. The entire structure felt insecure, dirty, and outdated.
As part of the renovation, all steps were replaced and securely fixed, using the same luxury vinyl flooring as the rest of the home to create a seamless, cohesive look. The railing was fully restored and refinished, giving the staircase a clean, modern, and safe new life.

Inspired by the multi-functional performance of a shell structure in nature, the design of this two-bedroom, two-bath ADU explored a performance-based roof geometry that becomes the building façade and privacy screen. Coupled with deep roof overhangs, this second skin allows dappled light to penetrate the interior during the day while reflecting the detrimental UV radiation on the southern exposure. The perforations in the second skin are based on the effects of the sun path on the southern exposure and the location of the windows behind the screen. At night, the interior light glows through the perforations, contributing to the name of the project, “LuminOCity”.

"MADE" is an acronym for Modular, Affordable Dwellings for the Environment. LuminOCity won second place in the competition and 9 awards in various categories. Following the competition, the home was donated to Homeless Intervention Services, Orange County, where it serves as an ADU on an existing property to provide transitional housing for youth experiencing housing insecurities.
This 750sf prefabricated, modular home is built on four, eight foot wide modules that nest together. The building system is predicated on a software-to-manufacturing pipeline called the FrameCAD Machine. This roll-former for light-gauge steel allowed Team MADE to prototype as well as site-manufacture every stud and track in the steel-framed home they would design. Over 100 student volunteers aided in the construction of the steel framing, MEP installation, building envelope, and site work. The use of prefabricated Light Gauge Steel allowed for higher construction tolerances with simplified assembly diagrams that could be followed by student volunteers. Joseph Sarafian, AIA was the lead architect as well as one of four faculty advisors on the project, leading the design of the project from conception to completion.

This home was done originally for a single man with great taste. He met a partner that felt threatened by the "Interior Decorator" and thought he knew a better way. This is the result of his change. They bought a new home together and originally called us to help but the partner was so insecure that he took over and used the cheapest quality he could find for their new 4 million dollar home. The cabinet builders complained that the cabinets were SO cheap they could fit them in right, they weren't even made of wood! Wood floors looked like laminate and were run the wrong direction. Paint colors didn't match the flooring/tile or were florescent bright like in this photo. The tilers paid no attention to consistency and one of the tiles in the fireplace is a completely different color. Some lighting is too big and some to small. Just a nightmare! No one will ever let them know but will surely talk behind their backs! Before you decide to do it yourself, consider the final outcome and whether you want it to look like the photo above or this photo that screams clash here!!! The single family dwelling resides on Cleveland’s westside near Kaams Corner and is a replacement home to one that had recently burnt down. The client, Eden Inc. provides subsidized housing for those facing challenges of housing insecurities and homelessness.
The single level home merges accessibility with a contextually sensitive design. The property is situated amongst a neighborhood full of post war housing. The wedge shaped lot informed the houses geometry, creating a design opportunity with two rectangular volumes overlapping. One simple volume maintains it’s rectangularity and houses bedrooms and accessible bathroom while the other volume houses public functions such as entry, living, kitchen and dining.
The project merges contemporary detailing with a traditional material and form resulting in a project that fits in the neighborhood and responds to the context while remaining functional to the diverse needs of today.

When we met William he was worried about insecurity of his deck. The posts was unstable and that can be very dangerous. We removed 90% of the wood. Then changed the important posts and made the footing stronger. We then build a new surface from redwood. The results say it all!
