This colonial revival was constructed by a young developer in the 1990s – and it showed. The owners, for whom it was built, had included some lovely ornamental details, and the basic façade organization was pleasing, but it needed work to instill the charm that we love of the early 20th century original colonial revival style. We decided to overhaul the exterior. High-quality materials were used to last a lifetime, and fine detailing was added where it was missing. Hard-working efficient windows and doors were installed, and the desirable existing elements were salvaged, repaired as required, and replaced where better versions were available. Custom detailing was added to highlight special features, and to keep within budget, some elements were reworked rather than replaced. With fresh life breathed into it and a brilliant new hue, this colonial revival shines as brightly as any of its forebears.

Remodeled Foster City home. We widened the kitchen by moving the patio door down. The client was looking to bring light and a more natural look into a very dark and painted kitchen. The wall behind the sink was opened up to create a large window for natural light. We also added under-cabinet, inner-cabinet, and pendant lighting to make evening entertaining easier. Gilmans assisted the client in finding a light wood and stain to instill an earthier feel. This feel was then extended into the backsplash to add texture to the kitchen. We have recycle, lazy susan and lots of drawers for ease of storage. The Cabinets are Dura Supreme Craftsman Cherry with Wheat stain. The powder room is Dura Supreme Textured thermofoil in Urbana Horizontal grain. The color is Caviar. Treve Johnson Photography

Inspiration for a scandinavian bathroom remodel in Phoenix

"Sun-Kissed Sanctuary" reimagines the traditional dining room as a versatile haven, perfect for year-round conversation and creating a lasting first impression. This project catered to the client's desire for a space that seamlessly blends casual elegance with organic elements. The design team employed a calming palette of soft whites and airy blues, setting the stage for a serene escape. Textural harmony was achieved through a layered approach: radial plush linen chairs provided sumptuous comfort, while woven pillows and a shagreen-wrapped coffee table added a touch of rustic charm. A lush fiddle fig leaf plant, strategically placed in the space, injected a dose of life and echoed the organic design theme. Respectful of the existing foundation, we integrated the client's existing rug, a statement chandelier, and a captivating wall thread hanging into the new design. To elevate the space further, we introduced custom elements that instilled a sense of unique character. Hand-crafted wood beams and wall trim, reminiscent of a sun-drenched porch, added warmth and architectural interest. Oyster-hued wallpaper on the foyer ceiling provided a bold textural contrast and a touch of coastal sophistication. The added white trim was accentuated, drawing the eye upwards and creating a sense of verticality. The "Sun-Kissed Sanctuary" transcends the limitations of a traditional front room, offering a versatile space that invites relaxation and connection. This project exemplifies our ability to curate a space that is both elegant and inviting, perfectly reflecting the client's personality and lifestyle.

The other aspect of quiet luxury to consider has to do with the “quiet” part of the name. A room with the quiet luxury look will contain a few high-end pieces that you’ve invested in, but the pieces shouldn’t steal too much attention with flashy elements and glossy finishes. Quiet luxury shines through moody tones and traditional color palettes, which is why quiet luxury statement pieces are often dressed in dark colors or deep earth tones for a distinctive atmosphere. It is an especially fulfilling Project for an Interior Designer when the outcome exceeds Client expectations, and imagination. This remodeling project required instilling modern sensibilities, openness, styles and textures into a dated house that was past its prime. Strategically, the goal was to tear down where it made sense without doing a complete teardown. Starting with the soul of the home, the kitchen, we expanded out room by room to create a cohesiveness and flow that invites, supports and provides the warmth and relaxation that only a home can. In the Kitchen, we started by removing the wooden beams and adding bright recessed lighting. We removed the old limestone accent wall and moved the sink and cooktop from the island on to the countertop – the key goal was to create room for the family to gather around the kitchen. We replaced all appliances with modern Energy Star ones, along with adding a wine rack. The first order of business for the Living Room was to brighten it up by adding more lighting and replacing an unused section with a glass door to the backyard. Multi-section windows were replaced with large no-split glass overlooking the backyard. Once more, the limestone accent was removed to create a clean, modern look. Replacing the dated wooden staircase with the clean lines of a metal, wire and wooded staircase added interest and freshness. An odd bend in the staircase was removed to clean things up. The flooring was upgraded throughout the house to reflect the contemporary color scheme. Each of the smaller bedrooms were similarly upgraded to match the clean and modern décor of the rest of the house. After such a transformation inside, it was only appropriate that the exterior needed an upgrade as well. All of the legacy limestone accents were replaced by stucco and the color scheme extended from the interior of the house to the gorgeous wrap around balconies, trim, garage doors etc. to complete the inside outside transformation.
