To encourage gathering, Rhodes Architecture worked closely with the owner to create special family places such as a music bar and jam space with storage for instruments, refreshments, even a “Marshall Amp” refrigerator. The lowest level is dedicated to play incorporating home gaming and theater, billiards, music, family discussions + hangouts with direct access to the western terraces, gardens, and a park beyond. A second level incorporates pragmatic space; garages, entry/mudroom, mechanical/interstitial space. The two central levels combine entry, offices, kitchen-living-dining, pantry, guest and bath and opens to a surrounding porch and deck. Upper levels incorporate four bedrooms and three bathrooms. Horizontal levels are linked, joined, and focus on a five-level white steel and bamboo stair wrapped in extensive glass that acts as a central hub, light well + atrium lending expansive vertical space and illumination to the home.

Dark rich woods of the slatted wainscoting are carried through to the eating alcove, where the entire room is lined with tongue and groove. A built in seat cover with Greek key trimmed pillows add to the maritime flavor. The table, miming the Greek key motif, reflects a astrolabe. Prints on the wall are of sextants, telescopes, and other nautical instruments. The two portholes, one a real opening in the wall and the other a mirror reflecting the real one creates a real optical illusion.

This sleek, kitchen abuts a modern mix of glass wall cabinets and high gloss laquer flat paneled cabinetry with the focal point directed to the intricate mosaic tiles the homeowner fell in love with. The best appliances for the chef of the home nothing less than Subzero Wolf. The dining area is enhanced with hammered metal table with abundance of windows with perfectly paired swivel chairs to share as you take on the day.

Key to this renovation was the strategic use of folding glass walls, which were instrumental in transforming the interaction in space between the home’s interiors and its lush surroundings. The folding glass wall systems were installed in critical areas like the dining area and primary bedroom, which now open grandly to the backyard. This home truly embodies the Mid-Century Modern architectural design principle of blending indoor and outdoor spaces. “The essence of mid-century design is the blur between indoors and outdoors; NanaWall captured this perfectly, enhancing our living space,” declares the designer/homeowner.

Situated in Houston, TX, this award winning landscape design was inspired by the nautilus shell. The owners of this property are enthusiastic hosts, and this backyard was designed to blend beauty and practicality for backyard bbq’s and cocktail hours.
A cobblestone path extends out from the nautilus and enriches the space with an organic touch, adding texture and dimension. The structure of the path is intended to encourage exploration and conversation. Purpleheart flows harmoniously throughout the garden like a river, complementing the succulent garden and dwarf mondo grass that forms lush pockets between the flagstones.
The focal point of this design is the custom water feature, comprised of upcycled musical instruments, that was commissioned by the owners. A custom hammock stand and deck were crafted as a place to lounge and enjoy the Houston sunshine.

The small cabinet was found in a former apartment’s laundry room. Ockerlander painted it with chalkboard paint.
