The owners, inspired by mid-century modern architecture, hired Klopf Architecture to design an Eichler-inspired 21st-Century, energy efficient new home that would replace a dilapidated 1940s home. The home follows the gentle slope of the hillside while the overarching post-and-beam roof above provides an unchanging datum line. The changing moods of nature animate the house because of views through large glass walls at nearly every vantage point. Every square foot of the house remains close to the ground creating and adding to the sense of connection with nature. PALO ALTO ACCESSIBLE BATHROOM Designed for accessibility, the hall bathroom has a curbless shower, floating cast concrete countertop and a wide door. The same stone tile is used in the shower and above the sink, but grout colors were changed for accent. Single handle lavatory faucet. Not seen in this photo is the tiled seat in the shower (opposite the shower bar) and the toilet across from the vanity. The grab bars, both in the shower and next to the toilet, also serve as towel bars. Erlenmeyer mini pendants from Hubbarton Forge flank a mirror set in flush with the stone tile. Traditional style interior remodeling at the first floor of a Capitol Hill Washington DC row home as part of a larger open concept kitchen renovation. Decorative white and blue wallpaper was used to make a small powder room pop with character. It also included a concrete sink on a custom vanity, hidden storage created with Amish custom cabinets.

This home’s noteworthy steel shipping container construction material, offers a streamlined aesthetic and industrial vibe, with sustainable attributes and strength. Recycled shipping containers are fireproof, impervious to water and stronger than traditional building materials. Inside, muscular concrete walls, burnished cedar beams and custom oak cabinetry give the living spaces definition, decorative might, and storage and seating options. This hallway could just as well lead into the Guggenheim as it does this incredibly artful kitchen. Tom Ralston Concrete blended 90% Oyster White and 10% Ash White color hardeners for these concrete floors to allow for a stark contrast with a black tile inlay that facilitates the continuation of the black arched wall.

Family room of a new construction single-level home in Orinda, CA. A partial-height board-formed concrete wall anchors the living area, a freestanding architectural volume that defines the family room from the bedroom hallway beyond while allowing light and air to flow above it, a structural and spatial device rooted in mid-century modern planning principles. Wall-mounted flat screen television centered on the concrete wall above a long mid-century walnut credenza with sliding panel doors. A sculptural multi-globe chandelier with five white frosted glass spheres suspended on individual stems from a dark walnut canopy hangs above the seating area, the room's most striking decorative moment. Two slate blue upholstered armchairs with exposed walnut frames echo the kitchen's slate blue cabinet palette, flanking a sculptural walnut oval coffee table with brass legs and a white marble top. The bathroom enjoys great views. The standalone white bathtub placed beside a large window is equipped with a Hans Grohe tub filler. The window features a soft custom made roman shade. We furnished the area with a blue patterned garden stool. The bathroom floor features a hexagon mosaic tile. We designed the walnut vanity with a marble countertop and backsplash, and his and her undermount sinks. The vanity is paired with unique mirrors flanked by tiny lamp sconced lighting. This is a quintessential Colorado home. Massive raw steel beams are juxtaposed with refined fumed larch cabinetry, heavy lashed timber is foiled by the lightness of window walls. Monolithic stone walls lay perpendicular to a curved ridge, organizing the home as they converge in the protected entry courtyard. From here, the walls radiate outwards, both dividing and capturing spacious interior volumes and distinct views to the forest, the meadow, and Rocky Mountain peaks.
