Double drapery rods with functional drapery panels and sheers give you 3 options. This is a great solution for street facing rooms where you want a little more privacy. Sheers can be pulled during the day for light exposure yet privacy, both drapes can be open to “let the sunshine in!” And both drapes can be closed in the evening for intimate moments in your home that you don’t want the neighbours to see!

Laura Beeler: I recently took a call from a customer looking for a designer. The mission was to help him create a wonderful, new living space in his downtown Des Moines loft. Matt & I had an instant connection. Since he had been in by Design before, we quickly set up a house call. An additional challenge was time — he was hosting a big party in 4 weeks! We chose the Tristan sofa for it’s retro look. We love how it appears to “float” over the stainless sleigh base. (Light & airy pieces were important as we didn’t want to overpower the intimate space). We anchored the room with a deep pile, chunky shag rug and topped it with a large storage ottoman. The two George chairs can span the decades and certainly have a personality all their own. The repetition of the metal and tufting in all of the pieces gives continuity to the design – an important consideration when designing a space this eclectic. The open shelving offered more storage as well as giving a great silhouette against the original white brick wall. I think the end result suits him to a tee, whether he is relaxing or entertaining. The best part was that we had it all in place in the allotted time frame.

This residence, located in Livingston, New Jersey, has many wonderful features. A very large home with over 6,500 square feet of living space, it has a very open plan but the homeowner is still able to find rooms set off from the openess for privacy. This home has an open floor plan in an L shaped configuration to allow a playroom off the kitchen (for easy monitoring of the kids while prepping for dinner) as well as completely open to a breakfast area and family room for great entertaining opportunities. The dining room, living room and study are smaller and more intimate spaces. The first floor also features a full bath, powder room, large mudroom, three car garage and a two story foyer. The second floor has four bedrooms each having direct acces to a bathroom along with an oversized master bedroom suite that is about 1,500 square feet (you can imagine the size of the closets!). This house continues to provide living space in the basement with a home theater and bar along with an exercise area, craft room, office and recreational space. The exterior features a blend of materials including stone, hardiboard siding, copper roofed bay windows and a covered front porch.

The client was inspired by Gustav Klimt's 'The Kiss'. The painting focuses on romantic intimacy depicting a couple locked in an intimate embrace against a gold background. Paintings such as The Kiss are visual manifestations of fin-de-siecle spirit because they capture a decadence conveyed by opulent and sensuous images. Inspired by the opulence the client chose a wallpaper with strong gold geometrics. All the other walls including the wardrobe are kept dark blue to make the gold stand out.

A master suite was added onto this idyllic farmhouse located in Fountain Inn, SC near Greenville. The addition provided a master suite on the main level of the home with a vaulted master bedroom with clerestory dormer windows, vaulted master bathroom with a central freestanding tub set in a framed alcove in front of a gorgeous picture window and crowned with a shimmering chandelier. An oversized marble tile shower with glass enclosure, tile niches and a bench seat flanks the tub on one side and is opposite and enclosed water closet with transom lites. Separate sink vanities allow for comfort and a seated make-up vanity is perfectly placed at the window for natural lighting. The hall leading to the master bathroom retreat is flanked by separate walk-in closets and has recessed pocket doors with transom lites. The suite has it's own vestibule providing the perfect transition area and access to the new study and half bath. The study was once part of a wrap-around porch and still benefits from the existing stone veneer chimney that was intentionally left exposed. The vaulted, yet intimate space is perfect for relaxing, reading, watching tv and conducting business. A paneled trophy wall adorns the wall opposite the stone chimney and provides a home for hunting trophies and cherished works of art. Saturday May 16, 10:30am to 12:00pm | Saratoga Blackwell Hillside Garden by Rebecca Dye and Hank Helbush of Design Focus International Register: https://tclf.org/event/garden-dialogues-northern-california-2015 Each detail of this spectacular Saratoga landscape was considered with its hillside site in mind, from the size of the pool to the choice of antique stone masonry. Working closely with the owner, the landscape architects created a series of intimate garden spaces on three terraces. At the top of the site, entertainment is the name of the game where a bocce ball court and a fire pit take advantage of the site’s commanding views of the Santa Clara Valley. Below the house, a jewel-like pool captures the eye, with its intricate glass-tile and bronze water jets. At its end, a seating area and fireplace are shaded by an arbor covered with climbing roses, adding both fragrance and hue. Visitors descend a series of terraced stone stairs set into the hillside, punctuated by raised beds of strawberries, lavender, artichokes, and citrus. SDH Studio - Architecture and Design Location: North Miami Beach, Florida, USA Set on a 15000 Sq. Ft. lot overlooking Sky Lake, this home was conceived as an intimate enclave. With a minimalistic approach, the architecture gathers strength from cantilevering planes and the innovative use of stucco textures.
