Sophisticated. Confident. Boundless. The Edge collection embodies the enduring appeal of the modern organic design aesthetic. Its intuitive design narrative speaks to an affinity for the beauty of nature and the movement toward elemental materials. Clean lines and simplified silhouettes are paired with a multilayered palette that includes mappa burl veneers, bleached walnut solids, travertine and satin brass accents. The raw beauty of walnut woodgrains is brought to life with natural, dry finishes that allow the material to speak for itself. This conference room was designed to support high-quality virtual collaboration with a seamless and intuitive user experience. The space features dual displays for enhanced content sharing, paired with a dedicated PTZ camera to ensure clear, professional video for remote participants.
Advanced ceiling-mounted beamforming microphones capture voices naturally throughout the room, while a dedicated audio system with in-ceiling speakers delivers clear, balanced sound for both in-room and virtual communication.
The result is a fully integrated environment where technology enhances collaboration without adding complexity, supporting both everyday meetings and high-level presentations.

Our main task was the illumination of the owners’ artwork, which had a light fixture that was too close to the wall and left the piece in shadows. We moved the lighting to the ceiling and precisely spaced it a foot and a half out for a perfect illumination of the artwork. Conscious of the client’s clean aesthetic, we ordered switch and dimmer plates in the same palette as the wall color for inconspicuous placement. We also created a more integrated, intuitive control panel for our clients, putting all the lighting on the first floor into a simple control panel and requiring just one button for different settings like “Welcome,” “Morning,” “Evening,” Entertain,” and “Off.” Our new design beautifully lit the client’s prized artwork, and better attuned the lighting to their lifestyle.

A free-standing painting and drawing studio, distinctly contemporary but complementary to the existing historic shingle-style residence. Together the sequence from house to deck to courtyard to breezeway to studio interior is a choreography of movement and space, seamlessly integrating site, topography, and horizon.

After: Now, the kitchen is a showcase of modern performance and elegant design. A 36” Thermador induction cooktop takes center stage, providing precise, fast, and efficient cooking with a sleek stainless steel frame that nods to the kitchen’s past while embracing the future. Above it, a Zephyr range hood with LED lighting adds both drama and function, complete with a wireless remote for effortless control. Under it, stunning “Faenza” wall tile in "Azul" stretches under the hood and frames the cooktop, creating a bold visual contrast.
The refrigeration got an enviable upgrade to a SubZero model, featuring internal water and ice. Home-cooked meals are now even more enjoyable with a new 30” Miele wall oven with top-of-the-line convection technology and a touch-display. This piece allows for intuitive, tap-and-swipe control on its oversized screen with perfectly visible text and symbols.
This renovation didn’t just update appliances, it turned a functional kitchen into a chef’s dream and a space for memorable entertaining.

This view highlights the balanced layout and thoughtful circulation of the kitchen, where parallel islands create an efficient and visually striking workspace. The long sightline draws the eye through the heart of the room, emphasizing clean lines, generous walkways, and a seamless connection to adjacent spaces.
Contrasting cabinetry adds depth and sophistication, while warm wood floors and carefully selected hardware soften the overall palette. Integrated appliances and tailored storage solutions maintain a streamlined appearance, reinforcing the kitchen’s blend of refined design and everyday practicality. This perspective showcases a space that is as intuitive to use as it is beautiful to experience.

This home in Southeast Portland had been previously updated by another firm through an extensive remodel and addition. HMC had the privilege of teaming up with Howells Architecture + Design on the last piece to be tackled, the family kitchen. The space was gutted and planned within the existing footprint, and reconfigured to increase intuitive task flow and to gain functional countertop and cabinet space from a redundant hall entry.
The back wall allows entry and room for mudroom-type storage. Oak floors and a large, frame-like opening draw your eye through to the dining room arch and beyond to the living space and focal fireplace.
The drama of this frame comes from the complex Horizon Blue and Opal Pacific Heath Ceramic tiles alternating in a vertical offset pattern. They add interest and cohesion to the kitchen and reinforce the perfect balance of traditional and modern established in the earlier remodel. The perfect exclamation point to a now beautifully finished home.
