Dramatic Aeonium 'Sunburst' Succulent brightens up the planting bed along the pathway in this project which was designed to gain more usable space. This narrow landscape included an update to the hardscaping and overgrown garden. My design reconfigured the pathway with poured-in-place concrete pavers accented by Mexican pebbles and a stunning variety of succulents and other site-appropriate plantings that thrive in shade and part sun. We removed the tree to create a patio area large enough to fit a table and chairs for a small group. Non-invasive/clumping Bamboo was added to help screen the patio and provide privacy. Other shade to part-shade plants were included that provide a variety of textures and colors throughout the seasons. Low-voltage lighting was installed for safety and ambiance. This home was in urgent need of a landscape renovation because the large ficus trees were destroying the driveway. And the overall look of the old plants certainly didn't show off the house. Once all the old plants were removed, the messy ficus trees were replaced with Japanese fern trees, which can be maintained at a size that keeps the house visible from the street - an important safety consideration. Layers of flowers were planted underneath the trees including golden shrimp plants, purple ruellia (no longer used because if it's invasive tendencies) and cranberry pentas. Pamela Crawford designed and installed the makeover. Discover thousands of ideas on Pamela's web site, pamela-crawford.com. This stunning home is located just above the beach in the desirable Rio Del Mar neighborhood in Aptos. My client poured her soul into the remodel which took the home down to studs. She has impeccable, contemporary taste and the home is a piece of art. We needed exquisite landscaping to tie the outside to the inside. Deeply contrasting and textural foliage-based design, copper gutters, and gorgeous light sconces now set off this contemporary gem. For the steep back hillside, we opted to do a hillside restoration and chose plants that existed in coastal terrace ecosystem prior to development. We removed tons of invasive iceplant and the whole hillside now buzzing with hummingbirds and pollinators, in addition to framing the ocean view with an undulating tapestry of plants. You can actually see spouting whales from the deck!

We converted an underused back yard into a modern outdoor living space. A cedar soaking tub provides year round soaking. The decking is ipe hardwood, the fence is stained cedar, and cast concrete with gravel adds texture at the fire pit. Photos copyright Laurie Black Photography.

Stone steps lead through the garden, winding their way past a crape myrtle. The original planting of shade loving hostas, ferns, ajuga and Spanish bluebells has been allowed to spread naturally. Border of mixed rhododendron and pines
