The homeowners of this California Cottage wanted a beach vibe in their 1700 sq. ft. home. They wanted to make the most of their spaces by widening doorways, adding wood floors throughout the house, and adding a skylight. This Farm Pond Renovation in York, PA included removal of the existing land bridge at the back side of the pond that was blocking the stream water flow and also clearing the aquatic weed and other invasive plants from the stream to allow for a better water flow to the ponds edge. We snaked the existing overflow pipe and attempted to clear it of any debris blocking the flow of water. For the new overflow we cleared the existing embankment and excavated a swale at the edge of the pond and created a natural looking stream overflow similar to one we would create in a typical backyard pond or water feature. This was done to prevent and stabilize the eroding bank along the pond edge. Also installed was a large scale pond aerator and aeration system to aide in the overall health and clarity of the pond.

This exuberant garden contains all the elements needed for a Wildlife habitat: water and food sources, cover for wildlife and places where they can raise their young. It is a sustainable garden environment that conserves and collects water and contains only non-invasive Calilfornia native and climate appropriate plants without using chemical pesticides or fertilizers.

When someone suggests to you that planting Bamboo will be pretty or will make a nice "natural" barrier or fence for your property, you kindly tell them no. Or you tell them yes and then give us a call in 10-12 years. We just finished reclaiming the backyard for a customer who bought a house that came with Bamboo already well established. It was planted who knows how many years ago and the results were pretty crazy. After a week of work with a combination of Bobcat, chipper, chainsaw, sawzall, sweat, blood and probably a few tears (or maybe that was just more sweat) we have finally reclaimed the backyard... for now. It will take regular mowings and some additional treatments to keep the stuff from coming back.

The view from the backyard to the house highlights the new and improved home and outdoor entertaining spaces. Two beautiful corten steel raised beds allow for food and herb growing. Much-needed pruning was necessary to highlight the features of the existing trees, which opened up the yard. We prioritized reusing many existing plants, removed invasive shrubs, and brought in a combination of new plants that will fill in for a lovely mix of texture and color over the years.
