Context Norbert and Robin had dreamed of retiring in a Passive House-certified home overlooking the Lubberland Creek Preserve in Southeastern New Hampshire, and they’d done their homework. They were interested in using four integrated Zehnder America (www.zehnderamerica.com) technologies to make the 1,900 square foot home extremely energy efficient. They didn’t miss any opportunity to innovate or raise the bar on sustainable design. Our goals were focused on guaranteeing their comfort in every season, saving them money on a fixed income, and reducing the home’s overall impact on the environment as much as possible. Response The home faces directly south and captures sunlight all winter under tall and vaulted ceilings and a continuous band of slim-lined, Italian triple-pane windows and doors that provide gorgeous views of the wild preserve. A second-story office nook and clerestory provide even deeper views, with a little more privacy. Zehnder, which previously sold its innovative products only in Europe, took on the project as a test house. We designed around Zehnder’s vent-based systems, including a geothermal heat loop that heats and cools incoming air, a heat pump cooling system, electric towel-warmer radiators in the bathrooms, and a highly efficient energy recovery ventilator, which recycles heat and minimizes the need for air conditioning. The house effectively has no conventional heating system—and doesn’t need it. We also looked for efficiencies and smart solutions everywhere, from the lights to the windows to the insulation. The kitchen exhaust hood eliminates, cleans, and recirculates cooking fumes in the home’s unique kitchen, custom-designed to match the ways Norbert likes to prepare meals. There are several countertop heights so they can prep and clean comfortably, and the eat-in kitchen also has two seating heights so people can sit and socialize while they’re working on dinner. An adjacent screened porch greets guests and opens to the view. A roof-mounted solar system helps to ensure that the home generates more energy than it consumes—helped by features such as a heat pump water heater, superinsulation, LED lights and a polished concrete floor that helps regulate indoor temperatures.

Mastic vinyl siding and GAF roofing gave this Dartmouth, MA raised ranch a top to bottom makeover! The homeowner wanted a maintenance free exterior and chose a combination of Mastic Cedar Discovery and Mastic Carvedwood 44 vinyl siding in the color, Montana Suede. Cedar Discovery was installed on the front of the house and replicates the look of painted cedar shingle siding. Carvedwood 44 vinyl siding was installed on the remaining three sides of the home and is made to look like painted cedar clapboard siding. Both types of vinyl siding come in an extensive collection of colors, textures, and widths to suit every homeowners style and budget. Fabricated on site using a portable break system, we also installed custom, white aluminum trim around all of the windows, doors, and fascia boards. Seamless aluminum gutters and downspouts were also installed. We stripped the original roof and replaced it with a GAF Timberline HD roofing system in the color, Mission Brown. The title pretty much sums it all up ” The Most EPIC Backyard EVER” this project is EPIC EPIC EPIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It’s a backyard full of dreams all which have come true. Speechless……..? Yup The project consisted of the installation of porcelain patio with upper fire pit area and hot tub at far end of patio. Upper patio surface and overlay of existing concrete pad was done in Abbotsford porcelain tile (24″x24″) in ‘Coffee Cream’ and porcelain ‘wood look’ tile in ‘Beachwood’. The lower patio area is constructed of natural irregular flagstone with the lower retaining walls being natural limestone boulders. Upper walls, fire pit, and upper steps were constructed of masonry faced with Piedmont natural stone veneer and capped with Chateau Limestone. Steps at the lower side are solid treads natural stone treads that match the existing steps at water feature and Chateau Limestone steps. Diving rock is a large natural stone slab similar to steps and bridge at the waterfall. Another boulder retaining wall was constructed along the path. The path leads to another set of natural stone steps leading to a circular natural flagstone patio with natural stone fire pit as well. Landscape lighting around new pool area featuring the FX luxor system. Included in the lighting system was 34 (under cap) step and wall lights (Zoning, Dimming, and Color Changing), 14 path lights (Zoning and Dimming) on paths as well as natural stone and solid steps and up lights on trees. FX Luxor system to connect with existing lighting system. This is an additional phase to a project that originally featured a large ecosystem pond with wetland filtration, stone steppers and bubbling urns throughout. The pond has a zero edge waterfall which enters a short stream before dumping into a massive beautiful waterfall. Natural stone steps lead upwards with a large natural stone bridge straddling the stream up to the pond and deck area. Truly EPIC!
