We used the existing bathtub, changed the tile around it and created a new shower. The floor of the shower, seat and up part of the wall behind the seat are heated. The shower not only has multiple jets, but is also a steam shower, which everyone in the family enjoys.

This shallow shelf has an acrylic-encased piece of the Berlin Wall set in the exact location of the aforementioned City. The pool has seven color changing lights, three Swim Jets driven by two 4 h.p. German-designed Speck pumps, two large underwater speakers and 30 small color changing lights around the entire rim of the pool and spa ledges, and the entire equipment set in an underground vault. The pool has been specifically designed for alternative sanitation and will likely have three different types of sanitation not centered on a salt or chlorine environment. The spa has been designed around the exact size of the owner. As the pool has two complete sets of equipment, heating both the pool and spa requires less than half the time of a normal pool and spa of this magnitude. Additionally, the pool and spa walls, and part of the floor, are all clad in Kirkstone (an amazingly dense stone that will stand any chemical or etching environment), and the rest of the pool and spa surface will be done in matching Hydrazzo (a form of underwater Terrazzo).

"Lynn, we're ready to do the Guest Bath now"! My clients excitedly told me. We had just completed the renovation of their Master Bath, so we set to work right away. They wanted a 'beachy theme' and were also excited at the prospect of a larger bath tub. "Beachy" was translated into the color and texture of the materials. Floor tile has a mottled, blue glaze reminiscent of a cloud-scattered sky, glass, mosaic tiles in translucent shades of blue and green echo beach glass and water. Faucets in polished nickel add sparkle and everything is set against a neutral backdrop of imported, Italian tile in glossy white. Although this room is contemporary, local historic architecture is still honored; faucets are a modernized version of old-fashioned faucet taps and the rectangular wall tile harkens back to subway tile - typical in many urban buildings. The tub area was enlarged by borrowing dead space from the adjacent kitchen pantry and there's plenty of new storage in the vanity and recessed medicine cabinet. Niches in the tub and shower area neatly contain shampoo bottles, soap and candles. To set the mood for supreme relaxation, the jetted tub contains a revolutionary feature known as Chromatherapy in which water-tight LED lenses imbue the bath water with colored light. An externally-vented exhaust fan keeps this windowless room fresh and layers of light come from the recessed ceiling fixtures and wall sconces. The mood is set for relaxing, so fill up the tub, sit back ... ahhhhhh … just beachy!

This project included a natural looking waterfall feature with the pond, moss rock boulders and lush landscaping around the pond and spa. Inspiration for a mid-sized coastal medium tone wood floor kitchen remodel in Boston with an undermount sink, recessed-panel cabinets, white cabinets, granite countertops, white backsplash, stainless steel appliances and an island

This lovely landscape sports a poured in place concrete slab patio with drought tolerant sedum plants between the slabs. This sedum mix is sold in sheets then cut to fit but it’s actually grown for green-roof application. It works perfectly in this hot environment too as it is extremely drought tolerant and can go a month without water. Because the water runoff is absorbed between the slabs the patio drainage works perfectly and there are no need for drains.The swimming pool is of the fiberglass variety. Though the initial investment is greater than that of vinyl pools the ROI is greater over a 10 year period. Fiberglass pools retains more heat as the pool shell is all one piece and they don’t ever require a new liner.. This fiberglass pool has cool built-in benching and steps. And there is even a swim jet built into one side great for those cardio blasting swims. The pool interior colour is grey though it shows a soft blue/grey when water is added due to the reflection of the sky and other surroundings. The pool coping is natural stone with rock face edge. The steel arbour was custom made. Metal (steel) was chosen for it’s slim strength as wood placed here would have been too chunky. The best rooms (indoors or our) have a subtle layering of textural elements. To me this landscape needed a structure here to define the “rooms” It will look even better in a few years when the vines reach the top and the Miscanthus on either side reaches its 7′ height!The 12′ x 16′ pavilion is also made of steel and houses an alfresco dining table and sofa set. The pavilions built in cupola makes the warm breezes comfortably pass through with no need for a fan. It’s also sunken 2′ from the pool/patio height and nestled nicely in the corner. I must also mention the large slim planters with “Red Shades” Canna lily within. They are the perfect boldness/balance!Step through the arbor and a linear pond with “floating” natural stone step is revealed! Two smooth flow scuppers are responsible for the quiet waterfalls either side. A wood deck overhangs the pond adding softness to the setting. A modern retaining wall with natural stone cap runs the full width of the pond and pool adding interest and dimension. In the covered outdoor living area this wall is the perfect seat wall - adding lots of extra party seating! The lesson to be learned here is that good design can be applied to any space. Modern Row House For this new home in Boston’s oldest neighborhood, Flavin Architects imagined an elegant structure that capitalizes on the natural light and beautiful views abundant in Charlestown. Our firm sought to respect the historic fabric of the city while designing for the 21st century. The façade, with its projecting two-story bay, divided windows and vertical proportions respect the adjacent urban pattern. Stripped down and elegant detailing, devoid of ornament, connects the structure to today’s modern Boston. The exterior combines cedar shingles and shiplap boards with jet mist granite. This dark grey exterior contrasts with a bright white interior washed with sunlight. Each floor is accessed by a stairwell illuminated by a Wasco skylight. Sunlight pours down and refracts through glass paneling run underneath a natural wood handrail down the stairwell. The dining room and adjacent sitting room are bathed in warmth and light from a double-sided fireplace. In the dining room, floor-to-ceiling windows open to the street, and frame a view of the stained glass windows in St. Mary’s Church. Above the bedrooms and master suite on the third floor, a rooftop deck provides our client with views of Charlestown, Boston, and the Bunker Hill Monument.
