The challenge lay in creating a unique look, with visually interesting materials and finishes, while not being so unique that potential owners couldn’t envision making it their own. The focus on key elements elevates the look, while other features blend and offer support to these striking components. As the home was built for sale, profitability was important; materials were sourced at best value, while retaining high-end appeal. Adaptations to the home’s original design plan improve flow and usability within the kitchen-greatroom. The client desired a rich dark finish. The client’s vision for this house and boathouse at Horning on the Norfolk Broads was to provide an exemplary building that is sustainable and graceful in design, complementing and enhancing the setting and providing a legacy for future generations. The extensive use of wood cladding and decking were key elements of LSI architects’ design. However, given that ‘The Haven’ is in a flood zone, surrounded on three sides by water and constantly exposed to a high moisture content in the air, LSI needed to find a wood that they could be confident would deliver durability, dimensional stability and aesthetics. Accoya wood presented the perfect answer. Accoya, supplied by International Timber, was used for cladding and decking. The glue laminated Accoya wood for the curved rear screen was manufactured by Newnham & Abel Ltd and hand finished with a protective merbau-coloured coating from WoodGuard by Guard Industrie. The same finish was factory applied to the cladding.

Complete kitchen remodel. The footprint of the kitchen that we started with had it broken into several areas that did not work together. Previous additions had unusable space and separation of key elements so the kitchen was not even functional. After removing walls and cabinets to create one open space we were able to give the clients a large kitchen with a functional layout that finally worked for them.

Lighting is More Important Than You’d Think Lots of us overlook the lighting options in our kitchens, but lighting is a key element of good kitchen design. Here are some lighting options you should consider when creating your plan: Pendant lights – over the last few years, these have grown in popularity. Not only are they a brilliant source of task lighting, but they are also a point of visual interest, especially when hung over a dining table or central island. Under unit lighting – task lighting under units can help to illuminate the worktop surface. Candelabra – these are often hung over a dining table Accidents are more likely to occur in a poorly lit kitchen, so getting the lighting right is extremely important. Not only that, but a well-lit room is more likely to be appealing and more inviting than a dark and dismal room.

A "Levitt" Home is named after an American real-estate developer who experimented with mass housing projects on the East Coast. Levitt & Sons' first successful housing development was located on almost 20 square miles of land near Hempstead, Long Island and was named Levittown. The assembly line construction method allowed Levittown to be constructed more efficiently than other developments at the time, with teams of specialized workers following each other from house to house to complete incremental steps in the construction. A key element of a Levitt home is a fireplace smack dab in the middle of the kitchen; a kitchen designers dream (haha!!) Here is the view of the fireplace our designers have to work with and around when designing for a Levitt home.
