We transformed this kitchen from an outdated southwest style space to a classic Spanish style kitchen. The custom built in refrigerator and freezer was created by selecting various molding pieces and designing doors and side panels to replicate a Spanish antique. This 1980’s colonial home in the heart of McLean, VA is home to a busy family of four who had been searching for ideas in Houzz for a long time. The previous kitchen was a dungeon-like maze, small and dark, front dining room was outdated, the powder room and pantry wrapped around a stack of duct pipes. After meeting with our design staff, we came up with plenty of recommendations which they loved. Our expert team set out to, eliminate the powder room from the middle of the kitchen and relocate to far end of a dead space in family room, eliminate closet and stack of second floor ducts, widen doorway to foyer with structural beam, widen window above sink to allow more daylight, relocate the back door to allow more cabinet space to the right of the sink, take down a major cinder block and brick wall separating family room from kitchen, inserting steel beam and steel post opening the entire kitchen to family room and adding floor space to kitchen. We implemented a large Island with dark black contrasting stain in the middle of kitchen space. Island includes a bar, sink, microwave and beverage center built in. Our designers suggested a polished marble backsplash with a chevron pattern behind the stove to make the kitchen stand taller. Clever use of various lighting sources and contrasting cabinet colors off set the unique three-inch thick soapstone island countertop. Complete with large-scale appliances, such as 48-inch steam oven, 48-inch tower fridge/freezer and others, we completely updated this 1980’s kitchen.

An old stone mansion built in 1924 had seen a number of renovations over the decades and the time had finally come to address a growing list of issues. Rather than continue with a patchwork of fixes, the owners engaged us to conduct a full house renovation to bring this home back to its former glory and in line with its status as an international consulate residence where dignitaries are hosted on a regular basis. One of the biggest projects was remodeling the expansive 365 SF kitchen; the main kitchen needed to be both a workhorse for the weekly catered events as well as serve as the residents’ primary hub. We made adjustments to the kitchen layout to maximize countertop and storage space as well as enhance overall functionality, being mindful of the dual purposes this kitchen serves. To add visual interest to the large space we used two toned cabinets – classic white along the perimeter and a deep blue to distinguish the two islands and tall pantry. Brushed brass accents echo the original brass hardware and fixtures throughout the home. A kitchen this large needed a statement when it came to the countertops so we selected a stunning Nuvolato quartzite with distinctive veining that complements the blue cabinets. We restored and refinished the original Heart of Pine floors, letting the natural character of the wood shine through. A custom antique Heart of Pine wood top was commissioned for the fixed island – the warmth of wood was preferable to stone for the informal seating area. The second island serves as both prep area and staging space for dinners and events. This mobile island can be pushed flush with the stationary island to provide a generous area for the caterers to expedite service. Adjacent to the main kitchen, we added a second service kitchen for the live-in staff and their family. This room used to be a catch-all laundry/storage/mudroom so we had to get creative in order to incorporate all of those features while adding a fully functioning eat-in kitchen. Using smaller appliances allowed us to capture more space for cabinetry and by stacking the cabinets and washer/dryer (relocated to the rear service foyer) we managed to meet all the requirements. We installed salvaged Heart of Pine floors to match the originals in the adjacent kitchen and chose a neutral finish palette that will be easy to maintain. These kitchens weren’t the only projects we undertook in the historic stone mansion. Other renovations include 7 bathrooms, flooring throughout (hardwoods, custom carpets/runners/wall-to-wall), custom drapery and window treatments, new lighting/electric, as well as paint/trim and custom closet and cabinetry.

Beaux arts architecture of Blairsden was inspiration for kitchen. Homeowner wanted clean airy look while repurposing cold commercial cooking space to an aesthetically pleasing functional kitchen for family and friends or for a catering staff during larger gatherings. Aside from the hand made LaCornue range, no appliances were to be be in the kitchen so as not to interfere with the aesthetic. Instead, the appliances were moved to an adjacent space and celebrated as their own aesthetic with complimentary stainless steel cabinetry and tiled walls. The color pallet of the kitchen was intentionally subtle with tones of beige white and grey. Light was reintroduced into the space by rebuilding the east and north windows. Traffic pattern was improved by moving range from south wall to north wall. Custom stainless structural window, with stainless steel screen and natural brass harlequin grill encapsulated in insulated frosted glass, was engineered to support hood and creates a stunning backdrop for the already gorgeous range. All hardware in kitchen is unlacquered natural brass intentionally selected so as to develop its own patina as it oxides over time to give a true historic quality. Had the opportunity to work on the beautiful home of Joey McIntyre. Project featured in Variety, "Originally designed by celebrated architect Paul Williams and extensively updated and renovated to combine period architectural details with a modern-day lifestyle, the approximately 4,300-square-foot East Coast traditional has four bedrooms and four full and two half bathrooms plus a detached cottage with another bathroom for guests or staff. A slender center hall foyer features polished grey and white checkerboard marble floor tiles and a tightly curved staircase; the formal living room has a fireplace and floor-to-ceiling bay window that looks out to the verdant front yard; a library opens through transom-topped French doors to the backyard; and a chandelier lit formal dining room comfortably seats ten or twelve. An open-plan wing behind the dining room includes a spacious and well-equipped eat-in kitchen with five-stool snack bar integrated into a double wide island and, beyond that, a cozily proportioned TV-room with pilaster-accented fireplace and French door access to the yard. Two guest or family bedrooms share a hall bathroom on the second floor while a third guest/family bedroom has its own bathroom plus French doors to a slim balcony shared with the master bedroom that offers up a fireplace, walk-in closet and a spacious, marble-tiled bathroom with claw-footed soaking tub, steam shower and French doors that open to a Juliet balcony."
