The expansive country house in the depths of Old Greenwich combines aesthetic idioms in both its furniture and architecture. Although the room contains pieces in a variety of traditional styles, the overall feeling is informed by more modern ideas about space. Here, a light, bright airiness replaces a heavy traditional motifs. The Neoclassical inspiration behind the decoration of the study / library is the French Bee. Designed as a cosy retreat, the room features a fainting sofa, swathed in petite flour-de-lis. On the floor is an antique Doris Leslie Blau Aubusson carpet of the Empire period, circa 1815. Opposite the sofa is a reproduction satinwood "Carlton House" desk with handprinted decoration. Before it sits a classic slipper chair upholstered in a striped Scalamandre yellow and white silk stripe. Also present is an antique George III oval satinwood work table and a commode inlaid with tulipwood decoration. The sitting room displays a variety of painted and fabric finishes in a palette of white and yellow. All of the wood trim is given a faux marble treatment.

Part of a luxury master suite addition, this bathroom offers the homeowners a comfortable, spa-like experience. The spacious 11’ x 12’ layout uses calming colors and plenty of natural light via a skylight to set a relaxing tone for this space. A large, glass enclosed shower stall features a built-in bench with both regular and hand-held shower heads. Storage niches inside the flagstone tiles store soap, shampoo and other must haves. If the owners opt for a bath, a “tea for two” whirlpool tub is ideal for a soaking. A large, furniture-quality custom vanity is topped by a dark granite countertop and contrasting white vessel his and her sinks. A full-width mirror is ideal for getting ready in the morning and the vanity itself offers significant storage space. A glass block privacy wall separates the commode from the rest of the space. Tucked away on the second floor behind the master bedroom, the lady of the house refers to this beautiful space as her “sacred place.”

Scandinavian inspired furnishings and light fixtures create a clean and tailored look, while the natural materials found in accent walls, casegoods, the staircase, and home decor hone in on a homey feel. An open-concept interior that proves less can be more is how we’d explain this interior. By accentuating the “negative space,” we’ve allowed the carefully chosen furnishings and artwork to steal the show, while the crisp whites and abundance of natural light create a rejuvenated and refreshed interior. This sprawling 5,000 square foot home includes a salon, ballet room, two media rooms, a conference room, multifunctional study, and, lastly, a guest house (which is a mini version of the main house).

  Free ebook, Creating the Ideal Kitchen. DOWNLOAD NOW   Having a space for their teenage kids to hang out after school, study and interact with Mom & Dad was at the top of the list for this remodel. The 1928 home, sits in a lovely Glen Ellyn neighborhood, near downtown and near all the action of the local high school and lake. It’s was a great house with great bones but the kitchen was in need of some TLC. The remodel project had been a long time coming, and since both the homeowners work from home, they had been nervous about disrupting their bustling daily schedules to get the project in motion. Once we had a plan in place, we dug in and got to work. The first step was to remove a non-load bearing wall between the kitchen and dining room. We then reworked the space a bit, eliminating a redundant passage way to the hall, and reworking a closet to allow for a large galley style kitchen and small bar area open to the dining room. The new kitchen has a small peninsula for the family to have casual meals and for the kids to hang out after school. A window was eliminated to give more space for cabinetry and storage, and another window was made larger to allow for a grander view into the backyard. We decided upon a layered approach to this space to provide character appropriate to the older home. White painted cabinetry provides a backdrop for interesting touches such as gray herringbone tile, a reeded farmhouse sink and bronze hardware and lighting. The bar has its own unique look featuring gray cabinetry with a patterned cement tile backsplash and walnut top. A bar fridge, glass cabinets and baskets for tucking away homework give this little multi-functional area loads of character. A miniature mudroom area was also added to the dining room so that the new space can be kept neat and tidy. The stylish result looks both appropriate to the 1928 home and provides loads of functionality for this active family that can now take advantage of every square inch their home. This project shows the remodel of a small 1950's vintage home master bathroom. 8"" x 18" Calcutta gold marble tile was used on the shower walls and floor wall base and ceramic gray penny tile on the floor. Shower includes curbless pan / floor, dual shower boxes, frameless glass slider, trough duel fixture sink and chrome fixtures.
