Placing the pool in the front yard, within the 25-foot setback, redefines the entry experience. It captures the western light and sets a relaxed, resort-like tone from the very first step inside the gate. Paired with a rear-loaded garage, accessed discreetly via the side setback, the layout transforms the site’s limitations into its greatest assets. Architecture and landscape take center stage, while the full buildable envelope is maximized without compromise. A natural rise of eight feet from front to back—rare in Sarasota—was embraced as an opportunity. Site walls function as both retaining structures and architectural elements, elevating the pool terrace and entry by over four feet to align with the main interior floor level. The result is a fluid connection between indoors and out: kitchen, dining, and living spaces unfold onto the terrace, blurring boundaries and enhancing everyday rituals as well as social gatherings. Architecturally, the home is coastal contemporary: open yet composed, airy yet grounded. Leveraging on the understated sophistication of both the simple elegant lines of the Vogue 5ft Round Table and the subtle seductive allure of 6 Apollo chairs with its refined, well-tailored appearance, the marriage of the Apollo Vogue is almost inevitable. While made to endure the robust and unforgiving changing climes of the outdoors, both chair and table have been designed to gracefully reside beautifully indoors as well. The Apollo Vogue Teak Dining Set consist of 1 Vogue 5FT Teak Round Table complemented with 6 Taupe Apollo Armchairs.

A previous renovation had shifted the main entry from the front to the side of this semi-detached house on a corner. PLANT’s ground-floor renovation and addition re-instated the front entry as the primary one, and leveraged the site’s access to light on three sides to create an open and airy kitchen, dining, living, and entry area. The clients are a young couple who write a popular food blog. We redesigned the ground floor to meet their specific needs for a test kitchen. They also asked for help with the classic problem of ‘so many things, so little space’. We incorporated many types of playful, built-in storage, including shelving, window seats, and the cabinetry flanking the entry and new stairs to the second floor. Exterior accent panels at the new entry feature an unconventional deployment of standard materials: using a repeating sequence of different ‘off the shelf’ cedar shingle shapes, we created a contemporary textural pattern that complements the more traditional shingling on the house’s upper floor.

Function meets form in the Delta House, which incorporates innovative building solutions for our challenging rural Canadian climate. Perhaps more akin to aeronautics than architecture, biomimetic processes drove the problem-solving approach while seeking multiple functions for each component. A typical Canadian home grows up and out of the site, exposing more of the facade to the elements. Instead of building up, the focus here was to make better use of the lower level. A section of the house was dug out on the south side, making room for three main glazed boxes. The spaces and bedrooms of a typical second floor were transferred to the more protected basement, thus lowering the volume of conditioned air within the dwelling. To minimize energy losses through the glazing, ATA centralized the windows on the south side of the building, while minimizing the glazing on other facades. The centralized windows became the “three sisters” allowing the winter sun into the main floor and lower level of the house. The aerodynamic delta shape of the building was tested in a wind tunnel and was designed to minimize energy loss due to contact with the turbulent winter wind. The sisters are tilted 10 degrees towards the sun, leveraging the properties of glass as a reflector, when the sun is at a high angle of incidence in the summer. The house also contains an innovative thermal mass battery in the basement slab and a connected radiative masonry fireplace. Excess heat, gathered at the top of the tent-like roof is directed down and reheated through the chimney before being drawn into the basement slab for storage. To provide this protection for the stairs down to the patio area, Kulyk Outdoors designed a smaller pergola zone using the solid fixed-roof Azenco R-Shade. Attaching the pergola to the home ensured complete protection against the sun’s rays, creating fulltime shade and rain protection to allow the homeowners to traverse the stairs without concern for the weather. To cover the grill station, Kulyk Outdoors leveraged another Azenco R-Shade zone that jutted out over the grill area. The insulated sandwich panel roof was supported by two pergola columns which sat atop a masonry wall that gave the grill area some definition and provided a housing for the natural gas hookups for the outdoor kitchen.

The home is organized around a large, outdoor courtyard which creates fluid continuity and access between the indoor and outdoors. From a chandelier of ceramic bells to a locally sourced, custom dining table, every major element has been calibrated to add to timeless composition of the home.

This new construction residence in the prestigious Stonebriar Creek Estates embraces refined rustic elements with transitional styling to create a beautiful classic home full of luxury features. We designed this home from the ground up, selecting all finishes and fixtures. We had a blast co-creating with the homeowners to attain their perfectly designed dream home. One of our favorite parts in the home are the exquisite Panoramic doors which span across the back of the house to let the outdoors in with visual impact and allow viewing the beautiful backyard from all of the first floor main rooms. Even better, the door panels can be positioned in a variety of ways to allow a completely open back of the house or in strategic ways to direct traffic flow when entertaining a large number of guests. Another show stopper is the kitchen island stone, a semi-precious find that uniquely captures all of the homeowners’ favorite colors and will be leveraged throughout the future furnishings.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but that is completely understated in this project for an award winning builder. Deluxe was faced with the challenge of a continuous staircase from basement up to second floor, surrounded mostly with windows which limited our abilities to leverage weight distribution. As you can tell, our mission for this client was accomplished, and done so beautifully. This is as custom as custom is going to get. The treads were made of 100% solid 2-1/4" Red Oak materials and the stringers were made of two laminated solid Red Oak boards to achieve a final 3-1/2" thickness.
