The design objective was to build a house for a couple recently married who both had kids from previous marriages. How to bridge two families together?
The design looks forward in terms of how people live today. The home is an experiment in transparency and solid form; removing borders and edges from outside to inside the house, and to really depict “flowing and endless space”. The house floor plan is derived by pushing and pulling the house’s form to maximize the backyard and minimize the public front yard while welcoming the sun in key rooms by rotating the house 45-degrees to true north. The angular form of the house is a result of the family’s program, the zoning rules, the lot’s attributes, and the sun’s path. We wanted to construct a house that is smart and efficient in terms of construction and energy, both in terms of the building and the user. We could tell a story of how the house is built in terms of the constructability, structure and enclosure, with a nod to Japanese wood construction in the method in which the siding is installed and the exposed interior beams are placed in the double height space. We engineered the house to be smart which not only looks modern but acts modern; every aspect of user control is simplified to a digital touch button, whether lights, shades, blinds, HVAC, communication, audio, video, or security. We developed a planning module based on a 6-foot square room size and a 6-foot wide connector called an interstitial space for hallways, bathrooms, stairs and mechanical, which keeps the rooms pure and uncluttered. The house is 6,200 SF of livable space, plus garage and basement gallery for a total of 9,200 SF. A large formal foyer celebrates the entry and opens up to the living, dining, kitchen and family rooms all focused on the rear garden. The east side of the second floor is the Master wing and a center bridge connects it to the kid’s wing on the west. Second floor terraces and sunscreens provide views and shade in this suburban setting. The playful mathematical grid of the house in the x, y and z axis also extends into the layout of the trees and hard-scapes, all centered on a suburban one-acre lot.
Many green attributes were designed into the home; Ipe wood sunscreens and window shades block out unwanted solar gain in summer, but allow winter sun in. Patio door and operable windows provide ample opportunity for natural ventilation throughout the open floor plan. Minimal windows on east and west sides to reduce heat loss in winter and unwanted gains in summer. Open floor plan and large window expanse reduces lighting demands and maximizes available daylight. Skylights provide natural light to the basement rooms. Durable, low-maintenance exterior materials include stone, ipe wood siding and decking, and concrete roof pavers. Design is based on a 2' planning grid to minimize construction waste. Basement foundation walls and slab are highly insulated. FSC-certified walnut wood flooring was used. Light colored concrete roof pavers to reduce cooling loads by as much as 15%. 2x6 framing allows for more insulation and energy savings. Super efficient windows have low-E argon gas filled units, and thermally insulated aluminum frames. Permeable brick and stone pavers reduce the site’s storm-water runoff. Countertops use recycled composite materials. Energy-Star rated furnaces and smart thermostats are located throughout the house to minimize duct runs and avoid energy loss. Energy-Star rated boiler that heats up both radiant floors and domestic hot water. Low-flow toilets and plumbing fixtures are used to conserve water usage. No VOC finish options and direct venting fireplaces maintain a high interior air quality. Smart home system controls lighting, HVAC, and shades to better manage energy use. Plumbing runs through interior walls reducing possibilities of heat loss and freezing problems. A large food pantry was placed next to kitchen to reduce trips to the grocery store. Home office reduces need for automobile transit and associated CO2 footprint. Plan allows for aging in place, with guest suite than can become the master suite, with no need to move as family members mature.

This concrete driveway is colored and textured to mimic London Cobblestone. We replaced a worn out asphalt driveway. The price point on this was one third the cost of real cobblestone. Being concrete means it will remain flat, be weed free, will not rut like asphalt, and cleans up easily and quickly because of the sealed surface.

The client provided a unique collection of framed images of Napoleon Bonaparte which were collected over several decades. The images are hung on a custom gallery rail system designed. Holes were drilled through the stems of Visual Comfort picture lights to allow the gallery rods to pass through the lights. This allowed centering of the picture lights to each rod. The bookcase lights are from the same series but they were modified to accept a one inch diameter custom rosette. The cabinet hardware, as with all of the metal finishes in the room, is polished nickel and includes Baldwin flush ring pulls, Von Morris mortise butt hinges and Brusso ball catches.
The beveled mirror and frame above the hearth is actually a Seura television mirror with Premier Glass. The television is completely undetectable when it is off and, when it is on, the picture is clear and bright. Undetectable behind the mirror is a Russound IR receiver that transfers IR signals to a cable box, DVD player, and Apple TV receiver located in the lower cabinets. The source components are connected to the television with HDMI cables. Bose wall-mounted speakers, positioned in the lower alcoves of the bookcase, are supplemented with a Sonos subwoofer placed under the sofa.
Surrounding the mantle and mirror is a three inch wide frame, identical to the frame around the gallery wall, that allows the Chesney's Edinburgh Carrara marble mantle and the steel Andover register grate to be set back from the bookcases. The mantle rests securely on a hearth stone of honed black granite which was recessed into the concrete floor. Suspended within the grate is an EcoSmart Bioethonal burner specifically designed for historic register grates. Volcanic stone was placed between the burner and the grate to conceal the front of the burner.
The bookcases, cabinets and wall paneling are fabricated from a combination of solid mahogany and mahogany plywood. Crown and base molding were eliminated from the design to minimize the impact of the library in an otherwise contemporary house. The fascia above the bookcases and mantle, as well as the fascia above the gallery wall, are single pieces of solid mahogany carefully shaved to follow the irregular contours of the drywall ceiling and eliminate the need for caulk or fillers. The same method was employed at the bottom rail of the face frame to allow it to follow the slight undulations of the concrete floor. Eloy Estrada built the wood components and installed them along with all of the other components in the room.
The two adjustable height Galerie des Lamps floor lamps on either side of the mantle are from the Grasshopper series. The Visual Comfort Dorchester Pharmacy floor lamps, on either side of the sofa, plug into a recessed Lew electrical floor box that was recessd into the floor under the sofa. The room originally had a chandelier and recessed lights all of which were all removed. The Lutron light switches, in matte Midnight, allow for independent dimming of the bookcase and picture lights. Within three of the bookcase alcoves are Littlight gooseneck lamps used to highlight various artifacts. The outlets for these lamps, and their transformers, are concealed under a removable wood panel at the back of the alcove. The cords for the display lamps cleanly pass through a Mockett grommet.

This charming farmhouse sits atop a grassy hill overlooking a serene Connecticut River Estuary. The new design reformulated the first floor plan making it much more functional and visually exciting. It encompassed the reorganization of multiple spaces including the Mudroom, Kitchen, Dining Room, Family Room, Sun Room, Laundry, Bathroom, and Master Closet. The design also added, deleted, and relocated windows and French doors to greatly enhance exterior views, draw in more natural light, and seamlessly upgrade the articulation of exterior elevations. Improvements to the plumbing and mechanical systems were also made. The overall feeling is both sophisticated and yet very much down to earth.

COld World European, Country Cottage. Three separate cottages make up this secluded village over looking a private lake in an old German, English, and French stone villa style. Hand scraped arched trusses, wide width random walnut plank flooring, distressed dark stained raised panel cabinetry, and hand carved moldings make these traditional buildings look like they have been here for 100s of years. Newly built of old materials, and old traditional building methods, including arched planked doors, leathered stone counter tops, stone entry, wrought iron straps, and metal beam straps. The Lake House is the first, a Tudor style cottage with a slate roof, 2 bedrooms, view filled living room open to the dining area, all overlooking the lake. European fantasy cottage with hand hewn beams, exposed curved trusses and scraped walnut floors, carved moldings, steel straps, wrought iron lighting and real stone arched fireplace. Dining area next to kitchen in the English Country Cottage. Handscraped walnut random width floors, curved exposed trusses. Wrought iron hardware. The Carriage Home fills in when the kids come home to visit, and holds the garage for the whole idyllic village. This cottage features 2 bedrooms with on suite baths, a large open kitchen, and an warm, comfortable and inviting great room. All overlooking the lake. The third structure is the Wheel House, running a real wonderful old water wheel, and features a private suite upstairs, and a work space downstairs. All homes are slightly different in materials and color, including a few with old terra cotta roofing. Project Location: Ojai, California. Project designed by Maraya Interior Design. Surrounded by 30 year old trees, the homeowners were looking for an organic, modern, low maintenance finish to their outdoor environment. Utilizing the pre-existing mature apple tree in the backyard VisionScapes developed a tranquil retreat that extended the sq.ft of the home through a series of terraced concrete and wood decks. Pathways and patio systems were locally sourced from a quarry on the edge of the Rocky Mountains.

On a second story of a storefront in the vibrant neighborhood of Lakeshore Avenue, this studio is a series of surprises. The richness of existing brick walls is contrasted by bright, naturally lit surfaces. Raw steel elements mix with textured wall surfaces, detailed molding and modern fixtures. What was once a maze of halls and small rooms is now a well-organized flow of studio and changing spaces punctuated by large (immense) skylights and windows.

The homeowner wished to add some color and style to her very neural and plain family room. We've addressed several components of the room: window treatments, furniture and rug placement and addition of pattern and color. The large bay type window consisted of 6 standard size windows separated by the strips of wall. We've added single width drapery panels in the pattern rich fabric and hung them on medallion type of hardware installed way above the window frame for for extra hight.
Two armchairs were placed in front of the bay area to create a perfect place for reading and conversation. Two color rich pillows were added to emphasize the area.

This neutral kitchen pallet provides the perfect backdrop to accent the vibrant colors of fresh healthy food preparation. Black stainless steel appliances provide a modern alternative to traditional stainless appliances. An induction cooktop offers an efficient and safer method of cooking when small children are present. The under cabinet lighting ensures the task at hand is well supported. The windrow table and imbue light were designed and built to showcase our studios unique and adventurous operation.
These pieces of sculptural furniture are inspired by elements found in our Manitoba landscape, by the raw material of nature, and our intimate understanding of process.
Every component to these pieces was made in house, from the milling and drying of salvaged trees to the forging and machining of custom aluminum parts.
The aim is to constantly stretch the limits of materials and seek new methods of making.
Imbue Light--200 year old white bur oak salvaged from development sites (trees in areas of development typically are land filled), cast aluminum in wood molds, cast and machined aluminum.
The Oak is cut green on our sawmill and then bent into the beautiful folding continuous rings and then dried. The oak is left raw to celebrate the color and strength that this wood has.
The aluminum is cast in wood molds, a technique Wood Anchor developed from countless hours of experimenting and becoming familiar with our materials. This leaves the aluminum with a beautiful purple/blue coloring and a texture that is reminiscent rough stone. Areas of the aluminum are polished to contrast the cast pieces and pay homage to the countless hours that we spend perfecting our craft.
Windrow Table--150 year old black ash salvaged from urban development (trees in areas of development typically are land filled), sheet aluminum is sculpted and seam welded by hand, the ground and polished.
The Ash is selected based on it’s suitability for the piece. It’s then cut on our sawmill, kiln dried and machined into a perfect table top.
The aluminum is cut and sculpted by hand using heat. There is no pattern for the piece; the artist creates it from his mind, studying the form as it develops. It is seam welded and the ground and polished by hand paying attention to every detail.
